Chers membres français de Sarnissa, Je suis nouveau ici, merci beaucoup à William Leshen de m'avoir ajouté. Je m'appelle Jean-Emile TOUSCH, je suis un Project Manager & Business Developer, et je viens de terminer un projet de deux ans en Tanzanie. J'ai un profil un peu «spécial»: ingénieur ESTP et ENSAM(Arts et Métiers)je suis originaire des secteurs de la construction et de l'industrie, avec des spécialisations en gestion de projet, développement des affaires et entrepreneuriat. Mais mon intérêt et ma passion pour la pisciculture (principalement Tilapia) a commencé il y a 1,5 an lorsque j'ai découvert la ferme piscicole "Papa Pesca" et le projet Norgesvel au Mozambique, Chokwe. Depuis, j'ai développé un project d'aquaculture dans le sud de la Tanzanie (Tilapia - de l'écloserie, de la nurserie aux étangs de croissance - Mode de culture semi-intensive en bassin naturels) et je souhaite continuer dans ce secteur, mon intérêt et mes connaissances grandissant jour après jour! Pieter De Klerk de "Papa Pesca", et son frère Matthew De Klerk avec qui je travaillais dans l'agro-industrie en Tanzanie, m'ont transmis le virus de l'aquaculture… ainsi que le virus "I love Africa"! Je suis actuellement à la recherche de nouvelles opportunités, ciblant en priorité le secteur de l'Aquaculture (Tilapia) / Agroalimentaire en Afrique. Anyone who can help and knows current farm gate prices (i.e. the price the farmer receives at sale) in local currency we would be very grateful if you send us prices per kg Could you tell us the Country/ District where production occurs For fresh whole tilapia of different sizes please give prices per kg to the size category that you know about but ideally as a guide as follows: Less than 50g 50 to less than 100g 100 to less than 200g 200 to less than 300g 300 to less than 500g 500 to less than 800g More than 800g We will anonymise any data we receive and once we have summarised data circulate to all on the SARNISSA list. L’année 2019 a été une année de transition sur le plan de nos interventions, avec la poursuite du montage d’une nouvelle intervention en Guinée, la réponse à de nombreux appels d’offre pour pouvoir travailler dans de nouveaux pays, ainsi que la mise en place de la suite de nos actions en Côte d’Ivoire, au Cameroun et au Congo. Grâce à votre collaboration, l’année 2020 va nous permettre de concrétiser ces projets et d’étendre et intensifier notre action. En effet, en Guinée, nous venons de commencer à mettre en œuvre des deux premières composantes du projet PisCoFam (Projet de développement de la Pisciculture Commerciale Familiale en Guinée). Dans le même temps, nous relançons une action au Libéria voisin, après 6 ans d’absence. Par ailleurs, notre programme multi-pays DéFiP (Développement des Filières Piscicoles) a démarré au Cameroun et en Côte d’Ivoire depuis juillet 2019, et nous permet aussi d’initier une première action au Cambodge en ce début d’année 2020. Soku is a Veterinary Doctor with a demonstrated history of work in the veterinary industry. He graduated from his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2018 from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. He has worked in several veterinary establishments (both clinic and laboratories) and field including fish farms where he worked on his thesis: Occurrence of bacteria in tilapia cultured in two fish farms within the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He subsequently worked with the fisheries laboratory in Ghana to aid in diagnostic works, notably, surveillance work in ISKNV, TiLV and Streptococcus agalactiae infection. His interest areas are bacteriological and virological works in fish, for which he is currently pursuing a Master’s degree program: MSc Aquatic Pathobiology, at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling. I am looking forward to hearing and meeting other Sarnissa members (vets and others) who work on fish health in various countries as well as members working in fish farms in the past or presently have some issues with fish health or disease. My country, Ghana, has in recent times experienced some outbreaks of viral and bacterial diseases especially along the Volta Lake. With the advent of new viral diseases, it is important to keep alert in order to prevent the spread or introduction of new diseases. Even though these outbreaks are related to tilapias, I am keen on also hearing on other fish species like the African catfish. Bonjour. Je fais de l'elevage du tilapia dans des bacs hors sol. Je cherche de la documentation ou des témoignages de la polyculture de l'élevage du tilapia avec les crevettes dans un système de production comme le mien. Chère Karen, J'ai récemment vu le rapport impressionnant de l'APDRA sur la promotion de l'aquaculture à petite échelle en Afrique. Il y a environ 30 ans, le programme d'extension de l'aquaculture de l'Institut asiatique de technologie a approché le gouvernement du Laos afin de développer des projets communs sur l'aquaculture à petite échelle. M. Singkam, alors directeur du Département de l'élevage et de la pêche, nous a dit qu'il était partisan de la coopération tant que l'initiative ne deviendrait pas ce qu'il a appelé un "projet de temporisation", les avantages disparaissant avec le retrait de l'appui au projet. comme il avait de l'expérience avec plusieurs autres. Je suis curieux de savoir quel soutien technique et financier est fourni aux agriculteurs participants par APDRA ?; et s'il y a eu une évaluation du degré d'adoption de l'aquaculture quelque temps après le retrait de l'aide au projet? Un tel examen devrait avoir lieu au moins 3 ans après la fin du projet et pas juste avant la fin du projet, moment où l'aide est toujours fournie. About 30 years ago the Asian Institute of Technology Aquaculture Outreach Programme approached the Government of Laos to develop joint projects on small-scale aquaculture. The then Director of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, Mr. Singkam, told us that he was in favour of cooperation so long as the initiative did not become what he called 'a sunset project', with the benefits disappearing with withdrawal of project support as he had experience with several others. I am curious to know how much technical and financial support is being provided to participating farmers by APDRA?; and if there has been an assessment of the degree of adoption of aquaculture some time after the withdrawal of project support? Such a review should take place at least 3 years after the end of the project and not just before the end of the project when support is still being provided. J'encourage ceux d'entre vous qui travaillent avec de petits agriculteurs à consulter le site de l'APDRA. Ils ont généralement des projets à très faible coût et de longue date qui, comme beaucoup d'entre vous l'ont appris, constituent le meilleur moyen d'aider les petits agriculteurs. J’ai utilisé de nombreuses parties du bulletin d’information pour les producteurs de riz-poisson dans les programmes de formation (Merci APDRA) et je les utilise maintenant dans des régions de Madagascar où leur projet n’atteint pas les objectifs. En outre, ils ont réussi à publier régulièrement leurs bulletins d'information depuis 2004. Combien de nos lecteurs ont-ils tenté de créer des bulletins d'information? Ils sont une excellente idée mais beaucoup de travail. Et la plupart des numéros des lettres d’information de l’APDRA sont en français et en malgache, ce qui rend encore plus de travail. Bien avant cela, cette même situation a été observée sur le lac de Buyo au niveau de Guessabo et le lac Dohou à Duekoué dans le mois de décembre 2018. L’équipe de recherche en hydrobiologie de l’Université Jean Lorougnon Guédé qui mène depuis Décembre 2017 des études sur les plans d’eau de la région a été informée par les communautés villageoises ayant à charge la gestion de ces retenues d’eau. Une campagne d’échantillonnage menée a permis de révéler qu’une seule espèce est concernée quel que soit l’endroit. Il s’agit bien de l’espèce Oreochromis niloticus et précisément les spécimens de grande taille. Il faut noter que es espèces de poissons les plus abondantes répertoriées dans ce lac à partir des pêcheries artisanales sont pour la plus part de la famille des Cichlidae. Ce sont Oreochromis niloticus, Coptodon zillii, C. guineensis, Hemichromis fasciatus et H. bimaculatus. En dehors des Cichlidae, quelques Mormyridae en l’occurrence Marcusenius ussheri et Pollymirus isidori, les Alestidae Brycinus imberi et B. longipinnis, l’Hepsetidae Hepsetus odoe sont régulièrement enregistrés. Les mesures de paramètres physicochimiques effectuées in situ sur le lac de barrage de Babadou et ou en laboratoire nous ont donné des valeurs supportables par cette espèce. Toutefois, une hausse des teneurs en certains sels nutritifs tels que NO2- et NO3-, de la conductivité et de la température a été constatée comparées aux valeurs enregistrées en février 2019 sur ce lac. Il faut toutefois rappeler que ces mesures ont été faites plus de trois semaines après la survenue de ce phénomène de mortalité massive de poissons. Les valeurs des paramètres mesurés ici pourraient alors être un peu différentes de celles qui prévalaient pendant la période où la mortalité a été constatée. Aussi, les teneurs en métaux lourds dans la chair des poissons morts sont- elles conformes aux normes de l’OMS. Aucune étude virologique n’a pu être faite à notre niveau en ce moment. Well before that, this same situation was observed on the Buyo Lake at Guessabo and the Dohou Lake in Duekoué in December 2018. The research team in hydrobiology at Jean Lorougnon Guédé University, which since December 2017 has been conducting studies on the region's water bodies, has been informed by the village communities responsible for managing these water reservoirs. A sampling campaign has revealed that only one species is concerned regardless of the location. This is the species Oreochromis niloticus and mainly large specimens. It should be noted that the most abundant fish species listed in this lake from artisanal fisheries are for the most part of the Cichlidae family. These are Oreochromis niloticus, Coptodon zillii, C. guineensis, Hemichromis fasciatus and H. bimaculatus. Apart from Cichlidae, some Mormyridae, in this case Marcusenius ussheri and Pollymirus isidori, Alestidae Brycinus imberi and B. longipinnis, Hepsetidae Hepsetus odoe are regularly recorded. Measurements of physicochemical parameters carried out in situ on the Babadou dam lake and in the laboratory have given us values that are tolerable by this species. However, an increase in the levels of certain nutrients such as NO2- and NO3-, conductivity and temperature was observed compared to the values recorded in February 2019 on this lake. However, it must be remembered that these measurements were made more than three weeks after the occurrence of this phenomenon of massive mortality of fish. The values of the parameters measured here may then be slightly different from those that prevailed during the period of mortality. As a result, heavy metal levels in the flesh of dead fish are in line with WHO standards. No virological study could be done at our level at this time. So here we would like to share this information with the scientific world in order to gather the opinions of the others and hoping to have feedback that will help us know what attitude to hold. My opinion is that this fish is a Clarotes sp. (confirmed by Yves Fermon who is among the best taxonomists for African fresh water fishes). Dear Randy Thank you for writing in – although im not an expert !! that’s what I thought - Chrysichthys nigrodigitalis - what the French and ivorians were doing well at breaking the hatchery cycle and grow out in Cote D Ivoire in 1990s – 120 MT in one year late 90s from one farm unfortunately this stopped during the later troubles – If it is this fish they are found widely in the commercial tilapia cage nets on Lake Volta entering when smaller with the tilapia and then growing to significant sizes 1.5 – 2.0kg in just 6-8months from the feed dropping down through the cage – They are highly valued in Ghana (3 X kg price compared to Clarias and tilapia) whilst still not grown commercially to any scale – to my knowledge? - But surely have potential as a commercial species – look out for French published papers on the Machiron as they call it from 1990s …… Perhaps my French and francophone colleagues can write in and tell us more details?
