The Wageningen-UR Centre for Development Innovation (CDI) runs short annual courses in
different areas of the fisheries sector for practicing professionals. These courses are
useful for staff from both government and NGO who are working in fisheries management,
research, higher education, training and fisheries development. In some cases the
Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP)

Fisheries governance
15 October – 02 November, 2012, Wageningen, the Netherlands
Introduction
In this training course the participants will learn about fisheries governance and the
relation with fisheries management approaches. The course will provide insights on
challenges that fisheries governance face and explores ways to strengthen fisheries
governance. It offers a framework in which participants will acquire insights and skills
to bring stakeholders in the fisheries system together, to help them understand each
other’s perspectives, manage their conflicts and learn together. The training programme is
interactive, and uses case studies to illustrate the effect and impact of different
management approaches and practices. Training methods include small group activities, role
plays, excursions and individual assignments.

Ecosystem approach to fisheries
12 – 30 November, 2012, Wageningen, the Netherlands
Introduction
To manage fisheries, information about fishers, catch and effort, fish stocks, fish
processing and trade is needed. Information, its collection, analysis and evaluation are
central in this course. Information forms the basis for policy choices, management plans,
monitoring and evaluations. In the ecosystem approach to fisheries the scope of management
activities (and the information needed) is extended beyond the topics and groups mentioned
to include the mutual influence of fishing and the ecosystem of which the fish are part
plus the effects of other human activities on the aquatic ecosystem. The course ‘Ecosystem
approach to Fisheries’ will discuss the selection, analysis and evaluation of the data
that are needed, and will assist you to make the step from a target species oriented
approach towards an ecosystem approach to fisheries management. The course is useful for
staff from both government and NGO who are working in fisheries management, research,
higher education, training and fisheries development.
