Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU)
Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies
At the department of Wildife, Fish, and Environmental Studies, the
domestication of fish from a breeding, genetic as well as from
welfare and behavioural perspectives have been central research
themes since the mid 80`s. Feeding schedules, selective breeding,
production models and evaluation of the environmental impact from
fish farms are some of the applied research topics related to fish
farming which are studied at the department. We have considerable
cooperation with other departments at SLU, performing up-to-date
research on new fish food sources and their effect on the quality of
the fish for human consumption. We have done studies on most species
relevant for Swedish fish farming: Arctic charr, rainbow trout,
Atlantic salmon, perch, pikeperch and grayling. The department is
located in Umeå, 700 km north of Stockholm. Umeå is the major
university town in Northern Sweden and SLU shares campus with Umeå
University.
