Most national programmes along with most sub-regional and regional institutions are now focusing on aquaculture as a way of hoefully filling, or trying to fill, the growing fish supply gap. This translates into what is now widely referred to as "commercial" aquaculture. This classification has no connotation in terms of size, scale, intensity or geographic location [i.e., it is an attempt to supersede such classifications as urban, peri-urban, rural, intensive, semi-intensive,extensive, small-scale, etc. with a more focused "taxonomy"]. Commercial activities are profitable and managed/operated as businesses: aqua-businesses. The flip side [corollary] of the coin from commercial is"non-commercial" -- perhaps correlated with "subsistence": these are activities that are not managed as businesses but that generate a wide variety of benefits to the beneficiaries. There have been suggestions that this dichotomy is equivalent to fish farmers versus farmers with ponds or farm ponds versus fishponds [obviously the discussion referring to more systems than just ponds]. Most national programmes are composed of a large number of farmers with ponds and significantly fewer fish farmers -- albeit that production for the large group is significantly lower than aggregate production form the smaller group. Taking this approach back to the drainage structure, a commercial fish farmer [including those with micro- and small-scale enterprises]will use a drainage devise that is the most profitable -- not only in terms of cost of installation but also in terms of operating cost [e.g., how long it takes to drain and how much maintenance it requires]. The non-commercial farmer with a farm pond will use whatever is available to provide functionality. As with most issues, there is no right answer, but there are right approaches. Monks, standpipes inside, standpipes outside, plugged drains, breaking-the-levee, and others are all acceptable options and there will be a best fit for a given situation. The challenge for those involved in research and extension is not to preach one size fits all. One of the lessons we hopefully have learned over the past decades is that the cookbook approach, which may have been helpful in "implanting" aquaculture, is now, in most cases, antiquated -- each farm, farmer and enterprise has a mix and match of technologies that will work best to provide the anticipated results based on the management objective[s]. In closing, it is perhaps useful to apply this to one of my favorite subjects: stocking densities. Here too there is no one size fits all. Stock in what you what to get out. Nature and biology apply, and each system will have a carrying capacity. Knowing this and knowing the size you want to harvest will give you the stocking rate -- you, of course, do not automatically get more out when you put more in. Dear all, In the early 1980's we made a training manual for fish farming in Rwanda and one of the tables in the manual gave a comparison between monks and PVC standpipes as drainage structure for fish ponds. It also offered the cut-levee option for pond draining. In Kenya, we made a comparison between standpipes inside the pond and standpipes outside the pond during the various pond construction training programs that were held. As I look at the information coming out of West Africa, and from other visits, I see that the fish ponds still have monks and some of the newly constructed ponds use monks. Whereas in East Africa, almost all of the fish ponds have switched to PVC standpipes as drains, except for very large ponds, where a monk-type drainage structure is often less expensive. There are certain construction principles that must be followed for each and if they are not, then the functionality is severely compromised. I am wondering, however, why it is that there is such a difference between West Africa and East Africa; or is it only my imagination? Regards to all, Karen
