À : Water Issues Announcement List
Objet : Important points from HLPE report - Water is integral to food security and nutrition
Dear all,
You may be interested in the latest report<http://www.fao.org/fileadmin/user_upload/hlpe/hlpe_documents/HLPE_Reports/H…> coming from the High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE), on water food security and nutrition. The report is the first of its kind to bring together water, food security and nutrition. The report is unique in pointing out these connections, and understanding these links is integral to tackling poverty. It goes far beyond the usual agricultural focus and highlights the necessity of water and sanitation for human wellbeing and survival.
Launched today, the Water for Food Security and Nutrition report by the HLPE for the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS) calls for policy coherence at all levels of governance and management around water, food security and nutrition issues. It makes several important points:
1. Policies and governance issues around land, water and food are usually developed in isolation; however it is vital for decision makers to take a joined-up approach in addressing these challenges. Against a backdrop of future uncertainties, including climate change, changing diets and water demand patterns, ensuring universal access to water and recognising the linkages between water and food security and nutrition are fundamental.
2. Understanding that water comes into every aspect of life, from consumption to production, is necessary for humans to able to lead a healthy life and have a sustainable livelihood. The report makes proposals for practical and immediate action to increase water, land and agricultural productivity to address these challenges.
3. Policymakers have to prioritise the rights and interests of the most marginalised and vulnerable groups, with a particular focus on women, when it comes to water access. Water of sufficient quantity and quality is essential for agricultural production and for the preparation and processing of food. Irrigated agriculture accounts for 70 percent of all surface and groundwater withdrawals globally. Water is also essential for various ecosystem functions, i.e. the conservation of forests, wetlands and lakes upon which all humans depend.
4. There needs to be an explicit focus on vulnerable communities. Policymakers have to prioritise the rights and interests of the most marginalised groups around access to water for food security and nutrition.
5. The human right to safe drinking water and sanitation as well as the right to food are globally recognised rights. The report calls for states to ensure the full realisation of these rights and explore how they can be meaningfully joined up. It argues that universal access to water and sanitation will lead to healthy and productive lives for all, for now and in the future.
The project team<http://www.fao.org/cfs/cfs-hlpe/news-archive/detail/en/c/224415/> was led by Lyla Mehta<http://www.ids.ac.uk/person/lyla-mehta>, Institute of Development Studies and included experts from the University of Brasilia, International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas and International Food Policy Research Institute, both through their affiliations with the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems, Pegasys Institute and the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy.

Thank you but please can you resend with smaller files for your attached photos - Many of our sarnissa members are still on very slow internet connections. So please compress your photos and resend. Incidentally whilst writing to you, I tried to share these photos of concrete tank systems you are building from your Facebook site , but it does not allow me to share them to the SARNISSA Facebook site. Hello,
Sorry this small departure from aquaculture but may be someone can help us.
We seek to have live specimens of Campilomormyrus tamandua but in the Nile area.
A species that has the same name is also present in the Congo.
It seems that these two fishes are two different species.
It needs to be alive so we can record electrical signals.
thank you in advance

Bonjour,

Thanks all for all the valuable and useful information. We will apply the remedies as suggested. Is there an easy way to determine when water is super saturated with gases?

We can visually see the gas bubbles when dissolved CO2 is the problem. Remedy is to greatly aerated or agitate the water to drive it off. The supersaturation of gases in general can occur from a leaky intake from a pump so that there is some suction of air followed by pressurizing. Remedy for this is to fix the faulty intake.
> James also suggests supersaturation due to high primary production, so that means supersaturated oxygen. This is rarely a problem but I have indeed seen problems from levels of oxygen that approach 250-300% saturation. Remedy for this is same as the supersaturated CO2. Agitate to drive off the excess.
> One mistake people make is when they think that aeration from a blower can supersaturate the water with gases. It cannot if the water is not in a sealed container. So, in a tank that doesn’t have a closed cover, the aeration can only de-supersaturate the water.
> As James mentioned, if you transfer fish from cold water that is saturated with oxygen to warm water, the gasses in the blood come out of solution and form bubbles in gill filaments and elsewhere. That is one reason why it is advised to acclimate the fish when changing temperatures. Clarias are very sensitive to abrupt temperature changes.

From my small experience, the most probable reason is the super saturation of air in the water and especially if the water source is from a pipe with high pressure within the pipe or high level of algae in the water and increased water temperature. I have lost both catfish fry and also blackmoores, koicarps, shubunkins and even comets.

We have checked our water parameters and all seem within acceptable ranges. We do not see anything obvious with the naked eye on the dead fingerlings. However we viewed some of the live fish under the microscope and we noticed the bumps/bubbles that can be seen on the attached pictures. We are not sure whether this is the cause of our mortality, however we are going through the process of elimination.

Merci d'avance
Meilleures salutations.

>From : TESSA TESSA CHRISTIAN
Hello,
I am TESSA TESSA Christian, and work as an engineer student, option aquaculture fisheries scientist at the Institute of Fisheries Science (ISH) of the University of Douala, Cameroon. The challenge is big enough to face, the face of strong demand, ever-growing fish products in Cameroon and the Central African sub-Region. Aquaculture in Cameroon is a sector to develop, train qualified personnel, set up infrastructure, in short, a system ranging from production, processing, distribution to support. My presence among you is not an accident. I believe that here, sharing is part of the DNA of SARNISSA and sustainable aquaculture is the phenotype.
I am delighted to be with you.
Salutation

Bonjour,

Evans, We do cover this problem in our field training, scheduled for end of July.
The worst problems with columnaris tend to come in cool season, usually July in Ghana but I think it is getting to be year around. Those who grow out fry in concrete tanks in Ghana have found that disinfecting the tanks in between crops help a lot. They use hydrated lime and just about paint the tank with it.
For fish being held in hapas, it is much more difficult. Still, antibiotic treatment via feed is best. Dr. Arias’ lab prefers florfenicol, sold as Aquaflor. We have also had some success with chloramine T bath.
The key thing about flavobacterium is how well it can avoid chemical treatments by hiding deep into a biofilm. It attaches very well to PVC pipe and various types of netting.
I attach the field training announcement for this year. Will post the registration link shortly.

Dear Karen,
As indicated by Naga, this is a real problem here in Ghana and in East Africa as confirmed by Br. Walakira.
My question is How do we tackle it for now? Until we come for the workshop in October, shall we continue to see our fishes die? Is there any solution we can adapt until then?

Dear Karen
This workshop will be very needful for current situation in Ghana.
Columnaris is at its peak virulent stage in Ghana. It became so deadly causing mortality in fingerlings from 10-80% based on location of farm.
On the Volta River after Akosombo and Akuse dam the problem is not much severe except few cases with less than 10% mortality but on main Lake its up to 80%.
The mortality starts from 4th day after stocking and continues till 9th day by when the damage is too high. 100% fingerlings will have sickle back and confirmed columnaris.
No clue how to stop. All farms blame hatchery operators and squeezing us for replacement.
I hope this workshop will help us to solve problems in Ghana.
If possible please conduct some program in Ghana to enlighten farmers in Ghana.
With Regards
Murali

Will, can you please post this to Sarnissa?
Flavobacterium is the causative agent of columnaris disease that affects many species in many different environments. Lately there are strains identified that are very pathogenic. It should be quite an interesting subject for researchers in Africa, because I have seen signs of columnaris disease in most clarias and tilapia hatcheries that i have visited. Even for us here in Auburn, it a very problematic pathogen. Dr. Arias' lab including Dr. Haitham Mohammed from Egypt) has been working with this pathogen for some years now and from looking at the past venues of this conference, so have many other labs.

Dear Karen - and then following Naga and then John - thank you for your posts on what is going to become more and more important in SS African tilapia culture as it intensifies ie disease and fish health . I would however wish to add a word of caution here that although Karen and her colleagues have isolated and identified Flavobacterium sp in fish in Auburn and the US - not in Ghana Karen? which appears to be causing mortalities in tilapia - the position in Ghana and perhaps also Kenya and Uganda is not so clear cut. The main Ghanain commercial cage culture companies have been experiencing these mortalities for a number of years now - particularly it seems in the days after transfer from hatchery into lake based cages. Flavobacterium may well be present and isolated - and causing a number of clinical signs of disease - How much actual clear cut laboratory diagnosis has been carried out in Ghana in last 3 years? What are the results? Has any of it been published? What is the capacity of the govt and ministeries and their research institutions to carry out good quality field and then laboratory analyses and diagnoses of fish especially bacterial pathogens in Ghana ? Under these circumstances it is very likely that there are also a number of other (as yet undiagnosed?) bacterial pathogens in tilapia which have yet to be isolated or reported. If one looks at the situation in S Asia in countries like China Thailand and now Bangladesh where commercial tilapia cage culture is growing fast - there are a range of bacterial pathogens being isolated which are causing significant mortlaities - some of these are extremely difficult to isolate and detect ie Fransicella sp. Therefore please for those in Ghana who are suffering with these mortalities please dont just assume its the first name that comes along - Columnaris disease historically in tilapia and also a range of other farmed species has typically been a secondary pathogen causing far more obvious clinical signs - However it may well not be the initial cause of the problem. Therefore as in growing Asian aquaculture countries many years ago as their aquaculture intensifies and disease becomes the nos 1 financial concern - there is the need for a proper , good quality govt (or private ?) sector disease diagnosis laboratory and associated expert well trained staff who can diagnose and work with a range of bacterial, parasitic , fungal and viral pathogens. Until this happens then we are all just shooting off in the dark . Finally it would be good to hear from some of the larger Ghanian commercial producers to hear of their experiences and also their potential solutions - either in prophylaxis , treatment or changes in farm management procedures in order to mitigate the disease problems and mortalities Best wishes Will

Dear Karen,
As indicated by Naga, this is a real problem here in Ghana and in East Africa as confirmed by Br.

Murali
