Excellent photo Nick - thanks for sharing. It makes sense that conditions closer to those in the wild would improve success rates. Some questions: - Is the management of larger ponds is more difficult? - Are there different management techniques for catching brooders in larger tanks? - Does anyone encounter space, water, energy, or financial limitations for larger tanks? Même dans un système RAS soigneusement contrôlé élevant des alevins de tilapia dans des cuves en béton de 2200 litres, nous considérons le cannibalisme comme un énorme problème qui nécessite une gestion constante et prudente. Les tiges de Tilapia (celles qui poussent plus vite) de 30 mm sont tout à fait capables de se nourrir de façon vorace sur les alevins, et doubleront de taille en une semaine si elles ne sont pas étalées. C'est pourquoi la vieille pratique des années 1960 consistant à «écrémer les alevins» des étangs de reproduction est si inutile et improductive. Les grands hapas pour l'élevage (20x5m) et les petits hapas pour l'inversion sexuelle (1-2m2) fonctionnent très bien et sont faciles à gérer. Lors de l'enlèvement et du comptage des alevins, l'utilisation d'une niveleuse est essentielle pour toutes les tailles inférieures à 30 mm. Assurez-vous simplement que l'inversion sexuelle et la reproduction ne sont pas effectuées dans le même plan d'eau, en raison de l'altération hormonale. Nous constatons qu'un cycle d'enlèvement des œufs de 10 jours est plus productif que de permettre à la femelle d'achever la période d'incubation complète, ou une période de temps plus courte. Even in a carefully controlled RAS system rearing tilapia fry in 2200l concrete tanks we see cannibalism as a huge problem that needs constant and careful management to sort out. Tilapia ‘shoots’ (those that grow faster) of 30mm are quite capable of feeding voraciously on fry, and will double in size in a week if not graded out. This is why the old 1960’s practice of “skimming off fry” from breeding ponds is so wasteful and unproductive. Large hapas for breeding (20x 5m), and small hapas for sex reversal (1-2m2) work very well and are easy to manage. On removal and counting of fry, use of a fish grader is essential for all sizes below 30mm. Just ensure that sex reversal and breeding are not done in the same water body, due to the hormone impeding breeding. We find that a 10-day cycle of egg removal is more productive overall than allowing the female to complete the full incubation period, or a shorter time period. We also discussed how the females can be synchronized, which is often a practice that is beneficial but that means fry production will be high for a few days and then drop off until the females all spawn again. So somebody who collects daily would normally notice a drop in fry collections and then they would pick up again. Ce n'est normalement pas un problème lorsqu'on utilise des hapas, à moins que les opérateurs ne parviennent pas à enlever les alevins qui ont été crachés par les femelles quand ils étaient en train d'encombrer les couveuses dans le hapa. Je peux comprendre que toutes les fermes n'ont pas des travailleurs aussi prudents qui se soucient ou qui sont correctement formés et c'est donc tout à fait possible. Karen L. We had this problem all the time in Malawi with T. rendalli. After two weeks, fry production started down because we couldn't catch all the juveniles that were eating them. Reasons can be several but the first one I mentioned was leftover fry/fingerlings that can cannibalize the new fry. Upon further discussion, he told me they harvest fry twice a day from the ponds and the photo he sent showed the long, narrow ponds. He decided to see if cannibalism was the case and drained the pond and did find a few fingerlings in there. He then dissected some and sent me a photo. One small fingerling had 28 fry in its stomach- see attachment. He sent several more photos, all of very small tilapia having very full stomachs and intestines of tilapia fry. Normally, hapa spawning can prevent this from being a problem but only if the operators are very careful not to leave any fry or fingerlings in the hapa. Draining spawning ponds after every cycle is also a means of preventing cannibalism and thus increasing fry production but it requires the operator to dry the pond between sessions and make sure no fry are left in nests. We also discussed how the females can be synchronized, which is often a practice that is beneficial but that means fry production will be high for a few days and then drop off until the females all spawn again. So somebody who collects daily would normally notice a drop in fry collections and then they would pick up again. Other reasons for a drop in fry production are: * cool temperatures- this will increase time for spawning and egg hatching; and even stop spawning * chronic low oxygen levels (those of you with hapas should be careful here, especially if you are letting the sides of the hapa foul) * low nutritional condition of the broodstock- especially the females. This is remedied by giving the females a resting time in a pond or hapa with no males present. * build up of predator insects and frogs in pond or hapa Do any of the readers have other observations to share? Mais il me semble que ce n'est pas l'azote qui soit responsable du gros ventre. En effet, j'avais signalé que notre eau a fait l'objet d'une analyse au laboratoire et a été déclarée propice à la pisciculture. En plus dans notre écloserie le siphonnage est fait 2 fois (matin et soir) dans les bassines contenant les alevins. La distribution de l'aliment est tellement rationner qu'à peine on observe des restes au fond des bassines. il se trouve donc que la mauvaise qualité de l'eau avec une forte teneur en azote n'est pas très justifiée. Après le siphonnage, systématiquement l'eau est renouvelée dans les bassines à l'intérieur de l'écloserie. C'est à l'arrêt des robinets d'alimentation en une nouvelle eau oxygénée que l'aliment est distribué. C'est après ce nourrissage que le phénomène de gros ventre est observé. C'est dire que c'est dans une nouvelle eau que ça se passe pas dans une eau de putréfaction. Pour les alevins sortis de l'écloserie et mis dans des bassins en ciment leur eau est renouvelée 2 fois dans la journée. Pourtant après nourrissage le gros ventre est observé. Pour comprendre il nous est déjà arrivé qu'après avoir renouvelé l'eau nous avons volontaire affamé les alevins presque une journée et on a pas eu des alevins sur le dos. Mais une fois que l'eau du matin a été renouvelée le soir et ensuite a suivi le nourrissage alors le phénomène a été observé. J'ose croire que les présentes précisions seront de nature à orienter vos réflexions. Merci encore pour les contributions des uns et des autres. But it seems to me that it is not nitrogen that is responsible for the belly bloating . In fact, I reported that our water has been analyzed in the laboratory and has been declared suitable for fish farming. In addition in our hatchery the siphoning is done twice (morning and evening) in the basins containing fry. The distribution of the food is so rationed that hardly any remains are observed at the bottom of the basins. it is therefore the case that the poor quality of the water with a high nitrogen content is not very justified. After siphoning, water is systematically renewed in the basins inside the hatchery. It is when the supply taps are turned off in a new oxygenated water that the food is distributed. It is after this feeding that the phenomenon of big belly is observed. This means that it is in new water that it does not happen in a water of putrefaction.?? For fry taken out of the hatchery and put in cement basins their water is renewed twice a day. Nevertheless after feeding a big belly is observed. To understand it has happened to us that after having renewed the water we have voluntarily starved the fry almost a whole day and we did not have fry on the back. But once the morning water was renewed in the evening and then followed the feeding then the phenomenon was observed. Il est toujours observable à 3 mois d'age et plus. Sur un lot de 10 mille alevins il peut y avoir une dizaine de gros ventre. La température dans l'écloserie dépend du temps qu'il fait mais en moyenne elle tourne autour de 28 degrés Celsius. La source d'eau est un forage qui fournit une eau dont le PH est 5,6 mais pauvre en oxygène. Nous avons deux bassins de stockage munis de compresseurs d'air qui améliorent le taux d'oxygène à un niveau acceptable soit autour de 4mg. En tout cas l'eau du forage à fait l'objet d'analyse dans un laboratoire et a été déclarée propice à l'activité. Je suis très disponible pour apporter d'autres clarifications pour induire une meilleure compréhension du phénomène. In our hatchery we have sometimes observed some fry which come to the surface ? (see photos attached) and this often after feeding. A few hours later they return to a normal posture. Looking at the big belly under a magnifying glass, it seems as if air has entered. Even if we did not observe mortalities this constitutes a curiosity. Bonjour Mr KOUNDUNO, L’Initiative pour l’Irrigation au Sahel (2iS) est une initiative conjointe de six pays du Sahel (Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritanie, Niger, Sénégal, Tchad) coordonnée par le CILSS avec l’appui de la CEDEAO et de l’UEMOA, et soutenue par la Banque Mondiale. Elle ambitionne appuyer les États et les acteurs de l’agriculture irriguée en vue de porter les superficies avec maîtrise de l’eau en agriculture à un million d’hectares, tout en assurant la viabilité, la performance et la durabilité environnementale des systèmes irrigués existants et futurs ainsi que le développement agricole connexe. Le Cadre défini à travers la 2iS constitue ainsi une référence stratégique et technique dans laquelle la complémentarité et la synergie entre les actions et les initiatives dans les six pays peuvent se décliner dans la durée et permettre ainsi la mise en œuvre concrète des projets et des programmes d’irrigation, respectant une base commune de méthodes, d’outils, de processus performants et réplicables dans le temps et dans l’espace. Bonjour à tous les membres de SARNISSA, Après avoir participé au projet sur le SARI (projet IRD) au Sénégal, et travaillé sur des exploitations piscicoles industrielles en Europe et au Ghana de 2007 and 2015, je travaille actuellement pour la société AquaBioTech Group, spécialisée dans le développement et audits de projets aquacoles. Nous participons à plusieurs projets en cours en Afrique, notamment en Ouganda (Technical Assistance for the Support to Promoting Commercial Aquaculture Project) et au Kenya (VicInAqua - http://www.vicinaqua.eu/) et explorons toutes autres opportunités de développement. Je serai dans ce cadre à Douala du 21 au 24 Novembre 2017 pour une mission d’exploration et de présentation de la société. Chers collègues, Le 12 septembre 2017, sest tenu à Ouagadougou au Burkina Faso un atelier de sensibilisation et dinformation des médias et des OSC sur la Directive CEDEAO relative aux grandes infrastructures en Afrique de lOuest. Organisé à linitiative de lONG Eau Vive Internationale, avec lappui financier de lUnion internationale pour la conservation de la nature (UICN) et de la Global Water Initiative (GWI), cet atelier avait pour objectif de renforcer les connaissances des OSC et des médias burkinabè sur le contenu de la Directive CEDEAO, afin de favoriser sa dissémination auprès du grand public et dinitier une veille citoyenne pour son application effective suite à sa récente adoption. Latelier a ainsi réuni une vingtaine de participants issus de la société civile burkinabè et des médias, mais également des représentants de deux communes directement concernées par la réalisation de barrages (Bagré et Bama), ainsi que du représentant du Réseau des parlementaires burkinabè pour leau potable, lhygiène et lassainissement (REPHA). Placées sous le thème « Limpact économique, environnemental et social des barrages et les partages des bénéfices qui en découlent : quels changements sont possibles grâce à ladoption de la Directive CEDEAO relative au développement dinfrastructures hydrauliques en Afrique de lOuest ? », les interventions du panel ont permis de souligner limportance de ladoption de ce texte pour une gestion concertée et intégrée des ressources en eau, qui promeuve léquilibre entre progrès socio-économiques, protection de lenvironnement et accompagnement social des populations affectées par la réalisation de barrages. Au-delà des présentations qui ont été faites, latelier a aussi permis dengager une démarche de diffusion concrète de ce texte à travers lélaboration, par les participants eux-mêmes, de plans dactions pour le plaidoyer et la veille sur le suivi de lapplication de la directive. I think that we are on the same wavelength about Guinea's potential for fresh water fish culture and for which the National Directorate of Fish Culture has designed its development strategy. But the question now is how to exploit the seemingly favorable conditions of the huge continental shelf. The water is warm and suitable for fish growth all year round, the sea is generally calm and Guinean coastal waters are renowned for their high biological productivity. There even is a large fully equipped shrimp hatchery on one of the islands in front of Conakry. In rather good shape, but on standby. Nowadays there is no more shrimp farming in Guinea, so maybe a good alternative would be to (partly) reconvert the site and produce seed of alternative species. Looking at global statistics, I see that marine aquaculture is developing very fast in the world these days. I'm wondering what is missing in Guinea to make part of this trend line? Coming back to the tilapia issue, can you also tell we what are its limiting factors for sea farming? Cette étude, qui est également menée régionalement sur des barrages au Sénégal et au Mali, cherche à comprendre dans quelle mesure et à quelles conditions les périmètres aménagés de Bagré permettent de réduire la pauvreté et l'insécurité alimentaire. Avec la pression démographique et la raréfaction des ressources naturelles disponibles pour l’activité agricole, l’informalité de la gestion du foncier des AHA et du statut des personnes qui les exploitent est devenue problématique. Les anciens détenteurs de droits fonciers coutumiers ont contesté certaines décisions de l’Etat en matière d’attribution des terres ou de propriété, et ont parfois bloqué des investissements et des travaux. Nombre de ces contestations sont portées devant les tribunaux, qui rendent des décisions remettant en cause la maîtrise publique des AHA. Face à ces contestations, les services de l’ONAHA se sont lancés depuis 2014, avec l’appui de la Global Water Initiative (GWI<https://www.gwiwestafrica.org/fr/>), dans un processus visant à expérimenter, formaliser, puis généraliser une démarche de sécurisation foncière des AHA existants et futurs au Niger. Ce guide reprend et explicite en détail cette démarche et les conditions à réunir, depuis la mise en place des équipes opérationnelles chargées de la sécurisation jusqu’à la délivrance des contrats aux exploitants et leur enregistrement. Destinée en priorité aux équipes nationales et régionales de l’ONAHA et de la direction générale du Génie rural, il vise à faciliter la mise en œuvre sur le terrain et la généralisation des opérations de sécurisation foncière des AHA au Niger au profit de l’Etat et des exploitants. The informal status of these irrigation schemes, and their occupants, has created problems due to population growth and the increasing scarcity of natural resources. Holders of traditional land rights have challenged government decisions concerning land attributions and property rights within the schemes, and have occasionally prevented construction from proceeding. Courts, when asked, have found against the State, compromising the physical integrity of these expensive public investments. In this context, the National Irrigation Office (ONAHA), with the support of the Global Water Initiative (GWI<https://www.gwiwestafrica.org/en>) has led a pilot process since 2014 to determine, and then generalise, a systematic approach to land tenure for all current and future irrigation schemes in Niger. This Guide presents this approach in detail, from the establishment of field teams to manage the process, through to delivery of secure contracts to farmers and their registration.
