*Summer Mortality Syndrome in Egyptian Aquaculture*
*En francais au dessus *
[image: image.png]
This tilapia disease related webinar tomorrow 20 January 2021 is a very
important and valuable for all working on farms, hatcheries, in research,
in teaching, in govt, from across Africa to listen to -
Egypt has intensified its commercial tilapia farming since the 1990s to
become Africa's biggest producer by far and third/ fourth in the world for
tilapia production.
For twenty years its production grew and was not too bothered by fish
disease problems, however in 2010 2011 things changed rapidly and the
Egyptian aquaculture sector experienced significant mortalities starting
March through to Sept causing significant financial loss to virtually all
fish farmers
- This so called summer mortality syndrome continues to the present with
the Egyptian industry and researchers trying to find out firstly specific
factors/ causes and then solutions ...............................
As such, this is a very important lesson learning for the rest of african
tilapia production as it is now in its early days of commercially
intensifying itself - and as our Ghanaian colleagues know well -
intensifying tilapia production can lead to considerable fish health and
disease challenges ........
Please take the time to Register and listen ........
Thanks to Ismail for the photo .....
https://ussec-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIqduqprDwsEt0d-tT4vi-dMjqtBTwv…

Subject: APDRA Pisciculture Paysanne presents its best wishes for the year
2021
To: "APDRA Siège" <contact(a)apdra.org>
Dear Partners,
On behalf of all APDRA teams, I wish you all the best for this New Year
2021.
>From the operational perspective, the year 2020 has been a pivotal year for
us with the launch of several projects that provide us with stability over
a few years. Thanks to the work done by the teams, we have started again
projects in Liberia and Benin while our other interventions in Guinea,
Congo and Madagascar keep on-going. Similarly, we continue the
multi-country DEFIP Programme (DEFIP stands for "Development of the
Fish-Farming Value Chains") in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Cambodia as well as
in Congo and Madagascar.
Strengthening our impact by increasing the quality of our actions is one of
the objective of our present strategic plan. The next three years, for
which the volume of activity is ensured, will allow us to focus on the
quality, necessary to consolidate the long-term reputation of APDRA. In
order to develop innovations, we have also begun two projects under the
leadership of CIRAD: one in Madagascar that is the DINAMICC programme
(Integrated approaches and support for an innovative and resilient to
climate change family farming in Madagascar) and one in Côte d'Ivoire that
is “Cocoa4Future” project on the sustainability of production systems and
new dynamics in the cocoa sector (also with the CRO, the University of
Bouaké and ISTOM).
During the Covid-19 health crisis, we have adapted our organization:
distance working/telework, weekly update on the situation of countries and
teams, works in smaller groups with farmers although sometimes compulsory
interruption of field work, production of training materials, shift or
cancellation of travels in countries (for workshops, exchange visits,
etc.), in France (concerning our summer school) as well as from/to France
(missions, leave for expatriates, etc.). With the exception of the months
of March-April 2020, our activities could be very reasonably maintained.
With this good news, I would like to thank you once again for your
continued interest and support for APDRA, especially during the pandemic.
Your involvement by our side allows us to achieve the objectives of our
missions and to keep our commitments to the fish farmers.
I reiterate my wishes for 2021 and I hope that this New Year will once
again be an opportunity for successful collaboration, allowing us to
continue to develop fish farming as a source of development for smallholder
producers and their families.
For APDRA,
Claire GSEGNER,
Chairwoman
Chers Partenaires,

Dear All - Sarnissa members,
We are terribly saddened to announce the death of Mr Robin Nyagato, our
farm manager at Chicoa Fish Farm, Lake Cahora Bassa, Mozambique.
Robin was probably the aquaculturist with the longest experience in
Southern Africa and beyond. A short biography written by my partner Gerry
McCollum is here below.
For all of those form Lake Harvest and elsewhere, now spread in the whole
of Africa who have known him, Robin has certainly left a memory of a very
good person, entirely dedicated to his aquaculture passion.
Robin is and will remain a pioneer of the aquaculture development in Africa
and most of all, a dear friend to a lot of us!
*Dear Colleagues,*
*It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Robin. He died
this morning, surrounded by his family, of complications from pneumonia. We
have lost a dear friend of many years and the Chicoa family have lost their
favourite uncle. Robin Chipo Nyagato was born in 1949 in Nyanga area of
Eastern Zimbabwe. He began working at Chingamwe Estate in 1969, where he
was introduced to Trout farming. He moved to RIBI, which would become
Cairns Foods, in 1974 and was promoted to Farm Manager. There he managed
not only the trout, but orchards and stone fruits. In 1987, Robin moved to
Kariba, with Cairns Foods, to what was to become Lake Harvest. It was there
that he began his career in the Tilapia industry. As Farm Manager Robin was
instrumental in establishing the first large scale tilapia cage farm in
Africa. With this wealth of experience, Robin joined Chicoa Fish Farm in
2015. He built the cage farm from scratch, spending the early months camped
in a tent overlooking the breeding stock and hatchery. Robin was one of the
kindest, wisest and most honourable people we have had the privilege of
knowing. He did have the finest instincts for fish and their needs with
rearing.*
Robin is survived by his wife Angela and his children Samantha, David,
Misheck, Maria, Judith, Margaret and Grace. Our condolences go to his
family on their great loss.
Best regards
On behalf of Chicoa Fish Farm team,
Damien
