A couple of additional points: * This semester the club will run on Fridays, from 12noon; the room will be booked for 2 hours, so we don't need to cut the discussion short, but there is no obligation to let it run for 2 hours. * The sessions are informal and include coffee/tea and biscuits. * I'll be there every week, so you won't be leading the session on your own. * Till writes about an introduction, but this can indeed be very short. Some colleagues start with a few slides to summarise the article, which could include discussion questions, others just explain why they have chosen it and open the floor for discussions immediately. And a third group start with asking the opinions of all attendants individually, before the floor is opened for discussions. * Any piece of economic writing is welcome, which could also be something written by you. Two criteria - the writing should be freely available and should not be too long (guideline is a maximum of 25 pages of plain text). * In general, students don't need to sign up and can come as often as they want. Last semester, there were on average 10 students attending each week; mostly honours years, but also from year 1 and 2. Note that some students take economics as an option module, so are technically no 'economics' students. The sessions are open for everyone. Please don't be nervous/shy to lead a session, the students are very keen to learn about all different fields within economics. I did directly approach some of you, as I knew their field of research would be of interest for the group. It would be great to receive your suggestions asap, so I can make the rota for next semester. I'm happy to answer any question you might have. It's a reading club for undergraduate Economics students where they read and discuss (typically instigated by a member of academic staff) recent seminal Economics papers. Typically, the really good students in our programmed self-select into this club, so it's a good bunch. I personally haven't been involved with the club in the past because of scheduling issues on my end, but it's something we could potentially link with our Lab (if only informally). I've just watched the recording. This is such an interesting topic and it seems like there was lots of discussion already! Here are my thoughts fwiw: * Practical point: For speech transcription, I would highly recommend Fireflies.ai over Otter or any other platform. It is very accurate, more than Otter and much more than Teams. * I agree with Till, that renewable energy may be too specific. Also, where are the bounds of renewable energy as it merges with energy efficiency of housing, transport policy and many other areas. As well as positive action, it might also be good to look at stopping/preventative actions like preventing new oil pipelines. * If you are going to analyse text, you might need to look for subtleties and pick keywords carefully. I sense climate action is increasingly being framed by putting other key benefits first, or even without mentioning the word 'climate' or 'environment'...and this may be a promising way forward. Republicans and other parties (like Labour currently) may purposely steer away from overtly linking to climate policy for fear of backlash. For instance, the IRA has had success in generating jobs and economic benefits and some Republicans are supportive of these policies. Labour have made very few explicit references to climate since coming to power yet have quietly changed some policies around clean energy. * How about female vs male judges' decisions? There are increasing cases of climate litigation around the world.
