Morning Folks,
I was trying to find something to teach me how to do the University Ethics Application and Liz Barnes kindly pointed me in the right direction last week (to the EDM portal but the training, instructions and documentation was not obvious but eventually found what I was looking for here<https://www.stir.ac.uk/internal-students/ethics-review-manager-erm/>).
Whilst looking for training I came across the following resources which is free for University of Stirling students and staff - you just register using the token below:
How can I access the new online resource?
Research Ethics in Practice is a new self-paced online course and is accessed on the Epigeum web-based platform:
1. Visit Epigeum's online courses website<https://courses.epigeum.com/> to register
2. Go to the top right person symbol and register by completing the registration form
3. You must use the Stirling email domain @student.stir.ac.uk
4. Enter the token cea1734f in the relevant field of the registration form
5. You will be sent an account activation email. Click on the link to complete registration and activate your account. If you do not receive the email check your SPAM/junk mail. You can also resend the activation email.
6. Once you have activated your account, log in using your username and password. You will be shown the Epigeum programme on the My Courses screen. Click on View Courses to launch it.
7.
If you require further assistance, please see the help page<https://courses.epigeum.com/help> or fill in the Epigeum customer support form<https://www.epigeum.com/epigeum-technical-support/>
Looks like there is other research material there too - I'm going to do the ethics short modules - will let you know if it's any good!
Cheers,
Stewart

Hi Liz and Gabe,
I’ve chased professional services again for you to be added to the modules. Please let me know if this hasn’t happened by tomorrow.
@Liz: The BSMP007 dates are Tue 13-15 and Fri 11-13. You should be able to see these once you are enrolled to the Canvas module.
Best,
Till

Thanks Till.
To Till or anyone else that can help: BSMP007 does not have up to date module dates and times on Canvas as far as I can see. I can only see past dates for Jan 2024.
Q1: Does anyone else have this problem?
Q2: What are the 2025 dates and times?
Q3: Should I audit by attending the module face to face or watch the recording later? What is best?
I don’t seem to have a Canvas invite for BSMP005.
Thanks everyone!

Dear PhD Lab,
I won’t be in Scotland this coming week, so would propose to start our PhD Lab in two weeks (week starting 27th January).
We also have to find a new time slot. Once I have an overview of supervisor availability (which is typically the bigger bottleneck), I will send a doodle around for you to fill in. Hopefully we will find one or two time slots that work for everyone (we may want to alternate between two days again if no clear winner emerges – especially since there are now two PhD labs going forward).
In the meantime, I wanted to make you aware of the following resources I recently learned about (hat tip to Kevin Grant, our Dean):

Hi Liz,
Thank you very much for watching the recording and adding excellent comments!
* For everyone/anyone: What is Alie Hilda’s book club?
It’s a reading club for undergraduate Economics students where they read and discuss (typically instigated by a member of academic staff) recent seminal Economics papers. Typically, the really good students in our programmed self-select into this club, so it’s a good bunch. I personally haven’t been involved with the club in the past because of scheduling issues on my end, but it’s something we could potentially link with our Lab (if only informally).
I’m attaching the lists of papers from the last three semesters so you can get a flavour.
Alie Hilda is always looking for paper ideas, so if either of you have a paper you have read (or plan to read) that thinks fits, she’d be delighted! You’d be on the hook for giving a brief discussion starter presentation (similar to what we do in our book club) but nothing too onerous.
Best,
Till

Hi everyone and sorry I could not join the Lab session yesterday.
I’ve just watched the recording. This is such an interesting topic and it seems like there was lots of discussion already!
Here are my thoughts fwiw:
* Practical point: For speech transcription, I would highly recommend Fireflies.ai over Otter or any other platform. It is very accurate, more than Otter and much more than Teams.
* I agree with Till, that renewable energy may be too specific. Also, where are the bounds of renewable energy as it merges with energy efficiency of housing, transport policy and many other areas. As well as positive action, it might also be good to look at stopping/preventative actions like preventing new oil pipelines.
* If you are going to analyse text, you might need to look for subtleties and pick keywords carefully. I sense climate action is increasingly being framed by putting other key benefits first, or even without mentioning the word ‘climate’ or ‘environment’…and this may be a promising way forward. Republicans and other parties (like Labour currently) may purposely steer away from overtly linking to climate policy for fear of backlash. For instance, the IRA has had success in generating jobs and economic benefits and some Republicans are supportive of these policies. Labour have made very few explicit references to climate since coming to power yet have quietly changed some policies around clean energy.
* How about female vs male judges’ decisions? There are increasing cases of climate litigation around the world. Would the sample size be big enough?
* In the UK I am not sure if you can analyse voting behaviours due to the influence of whips..??
* If you look at the UK, it might be worth speaking to people who know how the realities of the UK Parliament system really well and what data might be available, like Westminster journalist Isabel Hardman<https://www.amazon.co.uk/Why-We-Get-Wrong-Politicians/dp/1782399755>. Rory Stewart has also just published a book<https://www.amazon.co.uk/Politics-Edge-Memoir-Rory-Stewart/dp/1787332713> on this.
* For everyone/anyone: What is Alie Hilda’s book club?
Really cool topic!
Liz
