Hey guys,
Susan Greig (lead on the focus on fellowship scheme) got back to me:
For an associate fellowship, you need 1-2 years teaching experience. Working as a TA for 3 semesters takes your experience over one year.
The written piece is 1800 words, and then you have all your workshops, mentor feedback, etc., on top of that. She said the whole thing would be equivalent to 100 hours (or like a 10-credit module).
Best,
Jayne

Dear PhD Lab,
(1) Just a quick reminder that next week’s Lab slot is still unclaimed. Does anyone have anything related to their research they’d like Lab feedback on? If so, please feel free to add your name.
(2) The Econ PhD Lab is doing a Referee Report Session, similar to what we discussed we might do. That’s great, as we won’t have to to cram this into our tight Spring schedule.
* It’s one of Carl’s research papers that got rejected (with referee reports), then revised, resubmitted to another journal and is currently under review
* The topic of the paper is Econ, but the topic itself isn’t bone-dry: It’s about the Gender Pay Gap (details below)
* The paper got circulated this week and will be discussed in the Econ PhD Lab on Monday 17th of February at 13:00-14:00
* I realise that this may be a difficult time for some of you
* This is very much a group exercise in the sunup to the lab, so even if you can’t make the lab session itself, I think it will be useful
* If you are interested in participating in this exercise please let me know and I’ll talk to Carl and Hector to add you to it.
(3) For their second activity in March, the Econ lab will pick out some recent papers in top Econ journals for students to attempt to replicate, using published replication packages, and then the students will briefly each present a quick reflective summary of what they learned from the replication exercise they tried
* Perhaps also of interest to some of you
Best,
Till

Below are Carl’s instructions for the referee report exercise:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Review Carl's Paper --- Spring 2025
Hi All, The paper to review is this one:
Rejected at Oxford Economic Papers in December: Unequal Hiring Wages and Their Impact on the Gender Pay Gap | IZA - Institute of Labor Economics<https://www.iza.org/publications/dp/17285/unequal-hiring-wages-and-their-im…>
<https://www.iza.org/publications/dp/17285/unequal-hiring-wages-and-their-im…>
Slightly revised version of the paper is here, after the rejection, that we have submitted to another journal, where it is now under review. hiring_gender_wage_gap_2024.pdf<https://www.carlsingletoneconomics.com/uploads/4/2/3/0/42306545/hiring_gend…>
Collectively review the paper, latest version. And prepare a 20-30 mins presentation for the next Lab. I will then try my best to discuss and reply to your review on the spot. After the Lab, I will then share with you the actual reviews I received on the paper in December.
Best,
Carl

Hi all,
This Friday on Feb 07, Amy Hume will be in Stirling for a seminar with the MSc Behavioural Science students. You are very welcome to attend!
In fact, I would very much encourage everybody to do so. Amy is one of our Behavioural MSc graduates and she is having a great career in this field. She is currently working at Ofcom and deals with, for example, using behavioural insights to enhance online safety.
The seminar is in room 3b26 on 11 at Friday.
Just show up and also have a chat with Amy afterwards. I will join a little later as well after morning meetings.
All the best,
Leo

Dear PhD Lab,
First, well done on the flash talks yesterday! Really good standard of presentations across the board, despite the unusual flash format and the super-short prep time you had for this.
Second, I had to make a few changes to our agenda
* I had to merge two demonstration sessions to one (@Kevin: Are you able to do the LaTeX demonstration with Jasmine on the 19th of March?)
* To avoid a clash with the BSMP003 Thesis Development Session II on 26th of March, our lab will begin an hour later than usual. I will secure a room for this and update the agenda once I have one.

Third, the slot in two weeks (12th of February) is still unfilled. Does anyone want it to discuss any aspects of their research? If not, we can make it a communal one.
Fourth, enjoy your weekend. :-)
Best,
Till

@Jasmine/Liz: We’ve kept the next two labs free for you in case you want to have a mock talk before your annual reviews. Could you let me know which date you want?
* 05/02: Advantage: Gives you more time to incorporate any feedback you receive
* 12/02: Advantage: Gives you more time to prepare your mock talk
You can either both go for the same time slot (back to back) or choose one each.
@Jasmine: I’ve also scheduled you into two demonstrations (Academic CV on 19/03 and LaTeX – joint with Kevin – on 02/04). Please let me know if those provisional dates work for you. We can reschedule if necessary.

(3) We discussed whether to have regular PhD lab sport outings as a social event. Badminton and Pickleball were discussed. Next Wednesday before our lab there is a Pickleball for Wellbeing tryout at Stirling’s sports hall (I’ve sent the link through earlier today). Worth checking out. I think I’ll go.

Dear PhD Lab,
Bit of a curve ball by Carl below, but nothing this PhD Lab shouldn’t be able to handle. :-)
I would say: All of you who can make Thursday work should go for it. Our division consists of nice people and I trust the feedback will be friendly and constructive. Given the super short format, it lends itself to ideas that aren’t fully cooked yet, rather than projects that have lots of results already. Great forum to collect high-level feedback and feedforward.
So:
* 1st Year Students: Great opportunity to just introduce yourself to the whole faculty and let them know what you intend to do
* 2nd Year Students: You may use this opportunity to give a 5-minute pitch of your Chapter 2 ideas.
@All students: Please get in touch with your supervisory team and let them know (a) if you want to go for it and (b) discuss which project to present.
P.S. I am typing this on an airplane, so this e-mail won’t be sending out until after my arrival (past midnight).
Best,
Till
Begin forwarded message:
Hello,
Hector is unable to present or attend at the seminar this coming Thursday (30th Jan).
So, I have decided to repurpose it as our inaugural "PhD Economics & Behavioural Science Flash Talks" event.
PhD students will each have 5 minutes to introduce and explain their current research, focusing on one research paper. This can refer to a paper at any stage of progress. This serves several purposes:
1.
It allows you to introduce yourself and your research to everybody else in the Division.
2.
It serves as good practice for job market interviews, where in Economics it is common at the first stage to be asked to summarise your research paper in just a few minutes — hence it is probably best to talk about the fullest paper you have.
3.
The time constraint and preparation will focus your own mind on what the crux is of your current research.
4.
At conferences, you often meet people who ask you about your research in the corridors or breakout areas, who will only want to listen for a few minutes.
5.
Some conferences have flash talk sessions, as well as poster sessions, at which you need to be able to describe your research succinctly.
The rules for the talks are as follows:
1.
5 slides maximum, including the title slide if you want. I recommend using slides mostly for graphics (tables/figures), rather than plain text.
2.
5 minutes speaking time maximum. Somebody will moderate, and the talk will strictly end after 5 mins.
3.
No interruptions from the audience.
4.
To enable a fast flow from one talk to the next, please upload your slides onto the PC via memory stick before we start (i.e., before 12.30am).
Because I am pressed for time with organising this, I decided a schedule of talks already, using a random number generator.
Kevin, Jayne, and Katie: because you presented something in the seminar series last semester and we already heard about your research, I have included you as "maybe" participants at the end of schedule — no worries if you decide just to watch and listen.

Dear PhD Lab,
Thank you for letting me know your availability this Spring term. The votes are (mostly) in. I haven't heard from Katie, Liz Barnes and Johanne, but we are already down to a very short list of candidates.
Wednesday 12:00-13:30
* Gabe Han (optional, due to new Economics Lab)
* Jasmine Yang
* Jayne Brown
* Johanne Soefeldt
* Katie O'Neill
* Kevin Kim (optional, due to new Economics Lab)
* Liz Barker
* Liz Barnes
* Stewart Robertson
Wednesday 14:00-15:30
* Gabe Han (optional, due to new Economics Lab)
* Jasmine Yang
* Jayne Brown
* Johanne Soefeldt
* Katie O'Neill
* Kevin Kim (optional, due to new Economics Lab)
* Liz Barker
* Liz Barnes
* Stewart Robertson
Tuesday 15:00-16:30
* Gabe Han (optional, due to new Economics Lab)
* Jasmine Yang
* Jayne Brown
* Johanne Soefeldt
* Katie O'Neill
* Kevin Kim (optional, due to new Economics Lab)
* Liz Barker (only until 16:00?)
* Liz Barnes
* Stewart Robertson
@Liz Barnes, Katie, Johanne: Could you let me know how these three slots look for you?
Given the data we already have, I see two options.
Either: Settle on one of the two Wednesday slots
* These don’t work for Gabe and Kevin, but they would be able to join the new Economics Lab
* @Gabe/Kevin: Once you join the Economics Lab, do you still intend to attend the Behavioural Science Lab?
Or: We alternate between the Tuesday slot and one of the Wednesday slots (similar to last term)
Best,
Till
