Dear PhD Lab,
Next week there are two important events happening in Stirling and I would ask you to attend if you can.
(1) Jasmine’s Annual Review
* We finally have a date
* We know the presentation and know that Jasmine’s got this, but let’s show Jasmine on the day that we’ve got her back
* When: Wednesday, 27th of March 11:00 (our usual PhD Lab slot)
* Where:
* On campus: Lecture Theatre A7 (Cottrell)
* Online: https://teams.microsoft.com/dl/launcher/launcher.html?url=%2F_%23%2Fl%2Fmee…
(2) HMRC Behavioural Insights Team Campus Visit
* Natalie Gillson and Daniel Alford, the heads of the Behavioural Insights Team at HMRC (the UK's tax authority), are coming to talk about their work to the Behavioural Science Centre
* This is a great opportunity for future real-world collaborations and I hope we have a strong showing!
* Here is the schedule (rooms still TBA)

Dear PhD lab,
This is a reminder that we have our next PhD lab tomorrow from 11:00–12:30 in room 2B88 (Cottrell).
I don’t remember a specific agenda item for tomorrow (but please correct me if I am wrong), so we can have a regular touch base session and talk about anything that’s on your plates at the moment.
Also, we will welcome two new PhD students, Julion and Maeve, to the lab! They are two of Leo’s UCD PhD students whom Leo will keep second supervision from Stirling. They will join our labs remotely (exactly like Johanne), and will have a chance to introduce themselves to us tomorrow. You will see that their interests and backgrounds make them an excellent fit for our lab.
Best,
Till

Dear PhD lab,
This is a reminder that we have our next PhD lab tomorrow from 11:00–12:30 in room 2B76 (Cottrell).
Among other things, we can talk about Leo’s upcoming conference in Dundee, as well as funding for conferences in more general.
And we will continue with our book club: Kevin will present Chapter 3 of “Doing Economics" and we will discuss its contents afterwards, so please make sure to have read the chapter in advance.
P.S: I just noticed a second e-mail address popping up as a suggested recipient, namely behsciphdlab(a)groups.stir.ac.uk<mailto:behsciphdlab@groups.stir.ac.uk>, which is different from the phd-behsci(a)lists.stir.ac.uk<mailto:phd-behsci@lists.stir.ac.uk> we have been using. Does anyone know who cerated this and who is on it?
Best,
Till

Hi all,
I don't think most of us have met before, but Jayne and Liz can tell you that I do indeed exist. I'll be starting in Stirling in April and am looking forward to meeting you all.
This email is to encourage you to present your PhD research at this conference. It can be a 5-minute presentation of your overall PhD topic or of an individual paper - up to you. One reason to host this conference is to showcase the behavioural science work done in Stirling to the Scottish community and maybe this can lead to good connections and will be helpful for your PhDs and life afterwards. You should course have a chat with your PhD supervisor about this.
Do get in touch if you have questions.
All the best,
Leo

Subject: Presentation at Scottish Behavioural Science Conference on May 02?
Hi all,
We'll host the first (I think) Scottish Behavioural Science Conference on May 02.
Do you like to present something? Just drop me a quick message and I can add your name to the website. It could be a single paper or a stream of research you are working on and that you would like to share with the community. I will be asking for presentation titles soonish so you could already include one. This will be a networking event with enough time to chat and we will schedule rather short presentations.

Dear PhD lab,
This is a reminder that there is no PhD lab tomorrow.
Instead, I am hoping to see you in tomorrow’s Thesis Development Session, where staff (and that includes you!) will give feedback to our MSc students on their initial dissertation ideas.
This session takes place from 13:00–15:00 in room 2A75 (Cottrell).
Best,
Till

Hi everyone.
Woke up this morning not feeling well, so will work from home today.
I will therefore join today’s lab session online. Jasmine will also join online, so I’d suggest we’ll have an online session today.
Best,
Till

Hi folks,
Yesterday, I filled in Hector about our plan to use some of the PhD lab sessions for a semi-structured dialogue between supervisors and PhD students about 'hidden curriculum items’, such as career tracks, career steps, what’s important and what not, REF/TEF, wellbeing (imposter syndrome, dealing with rejection) etc.
He likes the idea a lot and made the following book suggestion:
Marc Bellemare (2022) Doing Economics: What You Should Have Learned in Grad School ― But Didn’t (paperback costs £19.44 on Amazon)
This looks like exactly the type of resource that could fill in some of the gaps we identified yesterday. I ordered my copy already.
@Simon: Do you know of a similar resource that’s less Econ-specific and that would be more appropriate for Johanne?
Best,
Till

Dear PhD lab,
Just a reminder to keep checking the PGR Research Development Programme (see below).
A few of these workshops have been mentioned by you today, but I thought it to be prudent to re-link this so everyone is aware.
Some of these sound promising.
Best,
Till

Hi Everyone,
I am really sorry but I have an urgent issue with my house to deal with tomorrow that requires a surveyor to come out. I really need this to be dealt with.
Sadly this means I will need to miss tomorrow's session as well as Elanor's presentation.
Kind regards,

Hi folks,
I managed to convince timetabling to allocate rooms to us for the entire term instead of having to book them over and over again every two weeks.
I have updated the rooms on MSTeams, so they should be visible to you there (and I believe they should have made their way into your calendars).
But for safety, here is an overview of the rooms:
Wednesdays 11:00–12:30
24.01.2024 - C.2A9
31.01.2024 - C.2A9
07.02.2024 - C.2B86
14.02.2024 - C.2B86
21.02.2024 - No PhD lab: Instead: BSMP Thesis Development Session 1
28.02.2024 - C.2B76
06.03.2024 - No PhD lab: Reading Week
13.03.2024 - C.2B76
20.03.2024 - C.2B88
27.03.2024 - No PhD lab: Instead: BSMP Thesis Development Session
03.04.2024 - C.2B88
10.04.2024 - C.2B88
Please note that on 21/02 and on 27/03 there will be no PhD labs because the SSFC (student-staff feedback committee meetings) are taking place at the same time. Instead, you are cordially invited to give feedback to our MSc students who are presenting their ideas for their upcoming dissertations. I believe your feedback will be extremely valuable to them. Not least because four of you (Liz, Katie, Jayne, Johanne) have been through exactly the same process before!
Best wishes and see you this coming week.
Till
