An Introduction to QSR NUD*IST for Analysing Qualitative Data
Dr Sam Punch
Applied Social Science
5th May 2004
B3, Cottrell - 3:00pm - 4:00pm
2A19, Cottrell - 4:00pm - 5:00pm*
The aim of this introductory session is to highlight some of the benefits
and limits of using NUD*IST as a tool to facilitate qualitative data
analysis.
The first half of the session (3-4pm) will illustrate how NUD*IST can be
used drawing on examples from a recent qualitative study. It will indicate
how documents should be prepared for NUD*IST and how to begin devising a
coding system. The second half of the session (4-5pm) will involve a more
hands-on approach, introducing the NUD*IST tutorial and showing you how to
start importing documents, coding the text and doing basic searches.
***Please note there are only 26 places available in the lab and this
session is aimed at those who have not used NUD*IST before***

STIRLING GRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOOL
Publishing your Research
Professor John Field, DAICE and Director of SGRS
21st April 2004 at 2pm - 4pm
2A17, Cottrell Building
This session examines the techniques and pathways by which graduate students
may achieve publication of their research output. The session will cover
each stage of the process, including the identification and targeting of
potential publishers, the writing and presentation of proposals in an
increasingly competitive academic marketplace, and the conversion of thesis
materials into publishable texts.
Three categories of academic publishing will be considered: books, journal
articles, and essays for edited volumes. John Field has published many
examples of each, and regularly reviews book and article proposals for major
academic publishers in the UK.

Hello fellow graduates,
I am a Psychology student in the final year of my PhD and am urgently
looking for participants to help me finish off my last experiment. Your
task involves making ratings of personality and attractiveness of male and
female faces. The experiment takes between 30-40 minutes, pays between £3-4
and will be run in Cottrell 3B114 (Faces lab).
To take part, you must be between 18-35 years old and have English as your
dominant language. If you are interested, please email me (
hyjc1(a)stir.ac.uk <mailto:hyjc1@stir.ac.uk> ) with times that work best for
you this week or early next week.
Thanks very much for your help!!

Surviving the Viva
Dr Angus Erskine; Applied Social Science
Wednesday 14th April 2004, 2pm - 4pm
2A17, Cottrell Building
The PhD viva is surrounded by mystique, but this shouldn't affect your
preparation or your performance. This session will, using both the
experiences of supervisor & students alike, provide you with information
that clarifies the viva process. You will be able to identify what
questions and strategies that you should discuss in further depth with your
supervisor. This seminar will:
* remove the mystique surrounding the viva process;
* define what the viva involves;
* help you structure and prepare for your viva.

Just to drawn your attention to the fact that there will be a 5 day UK
GRADschool at Stirling ( in the Management Centre) from June 24th - 29th
Any penultimate or final year doctoral student is eligible to attend a
national GRADschool. ( If places are available, it would be worth arguing
for a place if you would be approaching the end of your first year of
study).
These courses are free to students funded by AHRB, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, MRC,
NERC or PPARC . For other students a five day course costs £655 +VAT
(£114.62 VAT)
5-day GRADschool
The traditional 5-day GRADschools are the most popular choice of course,
allowing the most time for 'digesting' what you are learning by individual
reflection and discussion in your working groups. They provide a rounded
programme of both personal and career development.
Personal development focuses on communication skills, presentation skills,
networking and creativity as well as the overriding theme of teamworking.
Career development encompasses both your PhD and your future career. Group
discussion sessions cover issues relating to the progress of your PhD, along
with suggestions on helping you gain the motivation and skills to complete
successfully. CVs for academic and non-academic posts are discussed, and a
mock interview is normally a major feature on one of the days.
Further details and application forms can be obtained from:
