Calls for full proposals cover areas such as waste management, the use of pesticides and risk assessments for nanomaterials. RESEARCH COUNCILS MEMBERS SOUGHT FOR STFC ECONOMIC ADVISORY BOARD The Science and Technology Facilities Council is seeking nominations for non-executive members of its Economic Impact Advisory Board. NERC INVITES COMMENTS ON POLAR SCIENCE PLAN The National Environment Research Council invited researchers to comment on its draft priorities for polar research last week. INVITATION TO ATTEND STFC PEER PROJECTS REVIEW PANEL The Science and Technology Facilities Council has invited all members of the STFC community to attend the next meeting of the Projects Peer Review Panel on the 25 and 26 September. EPSRC INVITES COMMENT ON EQUALITY SCHEMES The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council has invited comment from researchers on its draft schemes for equality in the areas of disability, gender and race. PEARSON ANNOUNCES NERC COUNCIL CHANGES Ian Pearson, minister for science and innovation, announced the appointment of Thomas Meagher as a member of the council of the Natural Environmental Research Council on 3 August. LMB SCIENTISTS SPIN OUT NEW DRUG DEVELOPMENT COMPANY Scientists at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge have formed a new spinout company focused on developing new drugs to tackle diseases of the nervous system or metabolism. NERC OPPORTUNITIES ANNOUNCED The Natural Environmental Research Council has invited applications for a number of research grants and fellowships this month. INTERDISCIPLINARY THINKERS INVITED TO PLAY IN INNOVATION 'SAND-PIT' Funders are recruiting participants for a forum that aims to seed a number of multidisciplinary research and innovation consortia. The forum, nicknamed a 'sand-pit', will take the form of a residential workshop and is sponsored by the Technology Strategy Board, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council. EPSRC CALLS FOR PROPOSALS The Engineering and Physical Science Research Council has called for proposals in the following areas this month. OTHER NEWS BRITISH ACADEMY ANNOUNCES NEW SCHEME FOR MID-CAREER RESEARCHERS The British Academy has invited applications for a £150,000 award for mid-career researchers who wish to develop a new area of research. BRITISH ACADEMY BRINGS FORWARD POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP SCHEME The British Academy has announced that the timetable for applications for British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships has been brought forward this year. The change is designed to give universities more time to integrate postdoctoral fellows into departmental teaching and other programmes. RIN LOOKS AT ECONOMICS OF ACADEMIC COMMUNICATIONS The Research Information Network has commissioned Cambridge Economic Policy Associates to carry out a project assessing the economics of the academic communications process. YOUNG RESEARCHERS RECEIVE WELLCOME CAREER BOOST Twenty young researchers are celebrating awards of £250,000 from the Wellcome Trust this month to develop their careers in laboratories both in the UK and abroad. UK NANOFORUM TO TAKE PLACE IN NOVEMBER UK Trade and Investment announced that the UK NanoForum will take place on the 27 November in London. IN THE MEDIA DENHAM DEFENDS GOVERNMENT RECORD ON INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH John Denham, secretary for innovation, universities and skills, has defended the government's record on promoting international links with UK research, in a letter in The Times this week. PEOPLE, PLACES & PROJECTS SHEFFIELD ACADEMICS AWARDED MEDICAL FELLOWSHIPS Three academics based at the University of Sheffield have been awarded fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians and the Academy of Medical Sciences. Changes to SCONUL research Extra

>From 1st August the SCONUL Research Extra scheme, which allows academic staff and research student to borrow materials from other university libraries has been replaced by the SCONUL Access scheme. There are no changes to the entitlements of the scheme. SCONUL Research Extra cards remain valid until their expiry date, although members should move to SCONUL Access card when convenient.
