How can academics explain their research successfully through the media
to a non-academic audience? This workshop will explore the pitfalls and
dangers, as well as the rewards, of a relationship with the media.
Places are available for this, the final seminar of the Spring Semester.

<<Indrajit Hazra CCWS>>
Please will you send this out to the CCWS mailing list, with the message
I give below? Thanks. Please make sure that Indrajit himself, all the
pgs, William Barnes-Gutteridge and James Valentine are on the mailing
list, plus the people that I asked you to add last time.
If you can print copies of the poster - perhaps in just one fairly
bright colour - I'll ask the pgs to put them up.

I attach a notice about the next meeting of the Centre of Commonwealth
Studies. The speaker will be Indrajit Hazra, the current holder of the
Charles Wallace India Trust fellowship in creative writing. I do hope
that you can come. The paper promises to be both interesting and
entertaining, addressing as it does an issue that is being widely
discussed in Postcolonial Studies. Richard Alford, the recently
appointed secretary to the Charles Wallace India Trust, will be present
at the seminar; there will be drinks after the paper. Everyone is
welcome to attend.

Dear All,
I'm sorry that the seminar programme for the Centre of Commonwealth
Studies is late this semester - we had another possible speaker whose
visit depended on funding which, after prolonged negotiations, did not
materialise.
The programme as it stands is short but inviting, beginning with a paper
by Dr Phia Steyn in the History Department, which combines African and
environmental history. The current Charles Wallace India Trust fellow,
Indrajit Hazra, will speak on an issue that is increasingly interesting
scholars and readers of postcolonial writing, and Professor Huggan from
Leeds, a well-known postcolonial theorist, will visit us in May to give
a paper. There are two other papers/readings in the offing which we hope
will happen.
I attach the programme and hope to see you at the meetings.
<<Programme Spring 2005>>
Best wishes,
Angela

This session serves as a very basic background and introduction, for
Postgraduate research students, to the world of bibliographies. The
problems of citation and reference will be discussed, and some of the
solutions that do not use specialised software.
The session will also examine how specialised software, ProCite in
particular, can help to produce references and citations that are
consistent with common standards. Note the session does not look at how
to use ProCite

'Publishing Your Research'
Professor John Field, Deputy Principal, (Research) & Director of SGRS
Cottrell 2A87A, 2pm - 4pm
24th March 2005
This session examines the techniques and pathways by which graduate
students may achieve publication of their research output. The session
will cover each stage of the process, including the identification and
targeting of potential publishers, the writing and presentation of
proposals in an increasingly competitive academic marketplace, and the
conversion of thesis materials into publishable texts.
Three categories of academic publishing will be considered: books,
journal articles, and essays for edited volumes. John Field has
published many examples of each, and regularly reviews book and article
proposals for major academic publishers in the UK.
There are still some places left on this session - to book email me or
