Greetings from Ho-Chi-Minh City,
Thanks for sharing, Hector! I agree that this is a good opportunity.
You should also pencil in the SGPE conference in January. @Hector: Is there a date yet?
While I have you: Who wants the slot for coming week’s PhD Lab? (I will be joining the meeting from Vietnam via Teams) @Kevin: Maybe this would be a good opportunity for you to summarize the feedback you have been given by your AR reviewers so we can decide on a roadmap for you to wrap up Paper 1. Alternatively, Liz Barker could talk us through her PhD proposal.
Best,
Till

Folks at todays SES council meeting I was made aware that there are fewer than 10 days left to submit for next spring's SES meeting and to date there have been fewer than 40 papers submitted. This means that there is a very high likelihood of being accepted and moreover a great opportunity to participate in what is a very small, friendly and constructive conference.
I strongly urge you to submit. I would also especially commend the PhDs to submit their papers as this would be a good opportunity to get a friendly outing.
For more info and to submit please do so here:

A reminder that the Health psychology team is hosting Dr Kimberly More from University of Bath for a seminar on 1st October 9:30 (in our usual research meeting slot).
Title: From Simple to Complex: The Role of Behavioural Variability in Habitual Actions
Bio: My research intersects social and health psychology by employing the biopsychosocial model to enhance intentions and translate them into behavioural initiation and maintenance by targeting intrapersonal, interpersonal, and community resources. My work focuses on promoting simple (e.g., calcium consumption) and complex health behaviours (e.g., fruit/vegetable intake, exercise) and engagement with health and social-care systems in communities that are traditionally defined as deprived. My research examines habits, affective processes, identity, resiliency, and community resources. Currently, my habit-related research is focused on higher-order nutrition habits and the intersection between health-habits and other automatic and controlled processes, such as self-regulation and identity.
You can join us in the Health lab (3A117) or online.

Dear PhD Lab,
Here are a few important dates for this Autumn term.
(1) Our PhD Lab (Wednesdays)
* Reminder: Our PhD Lab will take place Wednesdays 11:00-13:30
* These will be in person but I have also created Teams meetings for the whole term for those who will join remotely.
* You should also have received calendar invites (not sure if this worked for non-Stirling e-mails, though).
* Timetabling allocated us rooms but they messed up and gave us rooms for Thursdays. I will update the calendar invites once we get the rooms for our actual slot
(2) Stirling Management School (SMS) PhD Meetings (Wednesdays)
* Our faculty also has started to have monthly PhD meetings (for all SMS PhD students) that you should attend
* Ironically, these clash with our PhD lab, so we will lose three slots this term
* The SMS PhD meetings take place every 3rd Wednesday each month, namely
* 16/10/2024 – 11:30-12:30
* 20/11/2024 – 11:30-12:30
* 18/12/2024 – 11:30-12:30
(3) Our Economics seminar series (Thursdays)
* If you are able to, you should definitely also attend our internal Economics seminar series
* Participating in departmental series is an integral part of your doctoral training as it will allow you to develop a sense of how academic talks work (or fail!) to familiarise yourself with the norms in these sessions, and, ultimately, to develop your own taste and style for giving academic talks yourselves down the line.
* I really hope for a strong showing of our group at these events throughout the term. It will also increase your visibility within the Economics division. It is important that your colleagues see that you not only exist on paper. Our Economics group is actually a nice group and we don’t bite, so don’t be shy.
* Sooner or later we expect all of you to present your own work in this seminar. The ideal progression would be to first present in our lab (completely safe environment), followed by our departmental seminar, before we let you out in the wild (conferences etc.) The seminar will also be used for the public element of your Annual Reviews
* Our seminar takes place every Thursday at 12:30 in room 4B96
* You will have an opportunity to find this room next week, because Kevin will have his Annual Review next Thursday. Please show up to support him.
(4) Royal Economic Society (RES) Doctoral Training Programme (Wednesdays)
* As already circulated, the RES runs an online doctoral training programme with exciting guest speakers
* You should also attend these if you can.
* There are 5 sessions scheduled on Wednesday afternoons (so after our lab)
* 09 October – Data Bases for Research Economists: Emma Gordon, ADR UK; Rebecca Riley, King’s College London; Claire Crawford, UCL and Joe Grice (RES)
* 23 October – Recent Advances in Public Economics: Using demand estimates to inform policy: Rachel Griffith, University of Manchester and IFS Wednesday
* 13 November – How to Prepare for the European Job Market: Tai-Wei Hu, University of Bristol; Apurav Bhatiya, University of Birmingham; Martina Uccioli; University of Nottingham and Mary S. Morgan, LSE Wednesday 20 November Recent Advances in Labour Economics: Stephen Machin, LSE
* 27 November – How Economic Research can Influence Policy-Makers: Mike Brewer, Resolution Foundation; Michelle Clement, King’s College London; Tim Butcher, Low Pay Commission; Neil Golborne Department of Business and Trade and Parama Chaudhury, UCL
* 11 December – Recent Advances in Behavioural Economics: Simon Gaechter, University of Nottingham
*
* More details here: https://res.org.uk/committees/education-training-committee/res-doctoral-tra…
(5) Stirling’s Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) Research Development Programme
* Just as last year, IAS runs regular PGR training sessions that some of you may find useful
* Newbies: Probably best to have a chat with our 2nd year students about the value of these...
* These are badged "Research Development Programme”
* The program is still being completed but some sessions have already been scheduled:
* 29/10/24 – 11.00-12.00 - Researcher Development – Development Needs and Planning
* 06/11/24 – 14.00-15.30 – Advanced Searching – Arts and Humanities
* 12/11/24 – 11.00-12.30 – Advanced Search Skills
* 13/11/24 – 11.00-12.30 – EndNote Fundamentals
* 14/11/24 – 10.00-11.00 – Back to Basics: Your PhD
* 21/11/24 – 10.00-11.00 – How to Start your PhD
* 22/11/24 – 11.00-12.30 – EndNote Advanced
* 28/11/24 – 10.00-11.00 - Methodology
* 05/12/24 – 10.00-11.00 - Methods
* 12/12/24 – 10.00-11.00 – Research Questions
* 19/12/24 – 10.00-11.00 – Writing and Editing
Best wishes,
Till

Hi all,
UCD has two good PhD opportunities with Marta Talevi and Lisa Ryan as supervisors. The positions are in behavioural, environmental, and energy economics. Marta and Lisa are very good and (importantly) nice. Alumni from our MSc would be competitive.
All the best,
Leo
Hi Leo,
How are you? I hope you're having a great summer and the move went/is going well.
I was wondering if you or anyone you know might have any Master's students who'd be a good fit for the following Marie-Curie PhD positions at UCD (note that there's a requirement to not have lived in Ireland for more than 12 months in the past three years):
Prof. Lisa Ryan and I are recruiting two PhD students to join the department of Economics and the Energy Institute at University College Dublin, Ireland, beginning September 2024 (or as soon as possible thereafter). Application deadline is 10 August 2024.
The PhD positions are part of a Marie Slodowska-Curie doctoral training network on consumer energy demand flexibility (CoDeF) and aims to integrate knowledge of social sciences and engineering in a doctoral training programme across 8 European research institutions. A total of 15 PhD positions in economics, engineering, energy systems, sociology and anthropology are opening across the network. These positions provide a fantastic opportunity for students interested in the energy transition. More details here: https://www.codef-dn.eu/home .
Note that each partner university is recruiting separately for different positions. At UCD we are looking for candidates with a background in Economics (especially behavioural, environmental, and energy economics), who will join our flagship PhD programme in Economics and work on a thesis on the decision-making process of householders to participate in demand response actions and the impact of those actions to increase the flexibility of electricity load in the residential sector. More detailed description of the two PhD positions at UCD (with related application details) can be found at these links:
-Engaging households in demand response interventions: Economic incentives and behavioural economics<https://www.ucd.ie/economics/t4media/CoDeF_Talevi_PhDAdDescription.docx.pdf>
-Household uptake and impact of demand response measures: Energy economics and agent-based modelling<https://www.ucd.ie/economics/t4media/CoDeF_Ryan_PhDAdDescriptionDC15.pdf>
In accordance with Marie Slodowska-Curie Action guidelines, candidates must not have lived in Ireland in the last 12 months of the three previous years. The successful candidacy is subject to the approval of the UCD Graduate Research Board and subsequent admittance to the PhD programme.
Given the tight deadline on August 10th, I'd really appreciate it if you could circulate this opportunity within your networks and to specific students or researchers who may be interested.
Many thanks,
Marta

Hello
Sorry to be the bearer of not positive news on a Friday!
Till is away so I thought I’d send a message to you all.
Thank you all for your hard work on this cluster – I’m sorry that it was not rewarded.
Maybe we should think about a Doctoral training centre application.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Subject: IAS Studentships 2024 Panel Outcome: Tackling challenges of Human and Environmental Health

Dear Till,
The IAS panel met on Tuesday 14 May to review the studentship cluster responses submitted in this year’s competition. The panel considered all aspects of the cluster proposal and student qualifications and experience in coming to its decisions. The standard of student applications was extremely high again and, like last year, we could have awarded the 16 studentships available several times over.
I am sorry to let you know that we were unable to fund your cluster in this studentship round.
As last year, I would be more than happy to organise a 1-2-1 feedback session to explain more about our decisions. I should reiterate, though, that the competition was extremely tough and had more studentships been available then we would have been able to fund a wider range of projects.
With many thanks
Iain.

Dear Econ and Behavioural Science folks!
Tim Cason from Purdue University—one of the keynote speakers at our 31 May workshop—will visit the Division a few days before the workshop. During his visit, he will be available for meetings and research discussions.
Tim is a leading expert in experimental economics, resource, and environmental economics. He has published in top journals, including those in the 'top 5'. What's important is that he is a very nice guy.
Tim will arrive on 29 May from the USA. If jet lag permits, he will be available that day and will be around on 30 May. He will be given a desk in office room 3B51, so feel free to come and say hi when you are around.
More information about Tim can be found on his website: [insert website link]. https://sites.google.com/view/tim-cason/research
I would invite PhD supervisors to encourage PhD students to meet one-on-one or in a small group with Tim.
Let me know if you want to meet and I will arrange.
Best wishes,
Mirko

Dear David,
Professor Werner De Bondt (DePaul University, Chicago, US) is coming to Dundee. Professor De Bondt studies the rationality and irrationality of investors, markets, and organizations. He has investigated key research questions such as the intuitive tendency of naïve investors to extrapolate past trends in stock prices and corporate earnings, market overreaction, bubbles, the excessive self-confidence of traders, and their herding instinct. Key facts:
• One of the founders of the field of behavioural finance.
• 3,357 citations of his paper in the Journal of Finance “Does the Stock Market Overreact?”. Co-author – Nobel Prize winner Richard Thaler.
• Frequent speaker to academics and investment professionals around the world.
• Numerous academic articles (among others, in the Journal of Finance, the Financial Analysts Journal, the European Economic Review, and the American Economic Review).
He will make three presentations. All in a face-to-face format. 2-4 pm. Dundee university campus. Venue to be confirmed later.

Announcement text:
Global environmental change exerts strong and primarily negative effects on human societies. Their effect on human health are wide ranging, and recent research suggests that the climate crisis in particular negatively affects mental health and well-being. In this talk, I address the links between planetary and mental health, suggesting how and under which conditions mental health is both affected by environmental crises, but also how mental health can contribute to understanding mitigation and adaptation efforts. Based on a review of stable evidence (i.e., reviews, meta-analysis), I suggest a multilevel model that seeks to integrate planetary and mental health and well-being.
