Dear Till,
I hope this email finds you well. Many thanks again for organising the workshop last week – I and my colleagues from the FCA found it incredibly interesting and useful for our work.
I wanted to make you aware of a job we’re currently recruiting for within the Behavioural Economics & Design Unit (BDU), which may be relevant for any recent/ soon-to-be completing PhD candidates in behavioural/ experimental economics (or similar) at Stirling (or elsewhere).
We’re currently hiring for a full time, permanent, Lab Manager role, for someone to oversee the teams’ in-house experiment capabilities. This role is broader than typical academic ‘lab manager’ roles. While it would predominantly involve designing and coding experiments as well as managing the lab, the candidate would have the opportunity to develop wider stakeholder engagement skills as a member of the BDU team.
This is a great opportunity for someone looking to develop their experimental design and coding skills while gaining valuable experience conducting online and field experiments within the heart of a regulator. Because of this we think it could be a great role for a recent behavioural/ experimental economics (or similar) PhD candidate looking to get applied experience and develop wider stakeholder skills. We typically use oTree and Qualtrics for our online experiments but experience with these specific platforms is not required.
It would be great if you could share this opportunity with anyone you think would be interested. I would also be more than happy to have an informal conversation with anyone who might be interested if they wish to reach out.
The role profile can be found here: Lab manager (senior associate) position<https://fca.wd3.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/FCA_Careers/details/Behavioural-Ins…>. The advert closes on November 7th, and the initial application process just requires submission of a CV.
Best wishes,
Cameron

Hi all,
We are delighted that Carl Singleton, who will be joining the economics division in January, is visiting campus next week.
Carl will present a paper that is of particular interest to the behavioural science group - 2-3pm in room 4b96, Tuesday 31 2-3pm.
The title of his paper is "Gambling on Momentum in Contests" and it is about a behavioural bias in forecasting. It uses sports betting to demonstrate an illusion of momentum.
Looking forward to seeing you there,

Dear colleagues,
[Sorry for cross-posting]
I am extremely pleased to announce that the Behavioural Science Centre is hosting a one-day workshop on "Behavioural Science and Digital Markets Regulation” on Friday, 20 October 2023.
The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers interested in behavioural regulatory policy and practitioners from the field (such as CMA, FCA, Ofgem, Ofcom, BIT).
The list of seven speakers is book-ended by two absolute powerhouses in the field:
* Fiona Scott Morton<https://som.yale.edu/faculty-research/faculty-directory/fiona-m-scott-morton> (Yale) serves as the Theodore Nierenberg Professor at Yale School of Management and was appointed Chief Economist of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition (but that is a story for another day). Prior to this, she served as the Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Economics at the United States Department of Justice Antitrust Division.
* Amelia Fletcher CBE<https://research-portal.uea.ac.uk/en/persons/amelia-fletcher> (East Anglia & CMA) is a Professor of Competition Policy, Non-Executive Director of CMA, and member of the Enforcement Decision Panel at Ofgem. Her past roles include Non-Executive Director of FCA, HM Treasury-commissioned Digital Competition Expert Panel Chief Economist, and Senior Director at the Office of Fair Trading. She was appointed OBE (in 2014) and CBE (in 2020) for her services to economic policy and the economy.
The lineup is complemented by five further speakers who are leading experts in their fields:
* Pete Lunn<https://www.esri.ie/people/pete-lunn> (Founder and head of ESRI’s Behavioural Research Unit & Adjunct Professor at Trinity College Dublin)
* Elisabeth Costa<https://www.bi.team/people/elisabeth-costa/> (Managing Director of BIT)
* Laura Smart<https://www.fca.org.uk/insight/author/laura-smart> (Senior Economist at CMA, formerly leader of the Behavioural Economics and Design Unit at FCA)

Hi all,
I am delighted to announce that Leonhard Lades is officially joining Stirling economics division as Professor of Behavioural and Environmental Economics. Leo will join the faculty in the Spring semester.
Many of you will know Leo as a former colleague here at Stirling and as someone who has reliably and regularly contributed to behavioural science at Steven after he had left.
Below is a link to Leo's website, which details some of his excellent contributions, including a state-of-the-art framework for considering the ethics of behavioural science interventions and, more recently, pioneering work that takes a behavioural lens to the environment and to administrative burden Leonhard K. Lades (google.com)<https://sites.google.com/site/leonhardklades/>
It is a very exciting moment for the Economics division and for the Behavioural Science Centre to be welcoming someone of Leo's vision!

Subject: Honorary lecturer
Hi Kevin and Sam,
I introduce you to one another - Kevin, Sam is the graduate from our MSc who I nominate as an honorary lecturer. Here is the justification that the board is seeking - let me know if there is anything I can help with:
Sam Shand is partnering with Prof David Comerford around the delivery of the MSc Behavioural Science. Sam is representing Cowry Consulting, one of the UK's foremost behavioural science consulting agencies. Cowry works predominantly with organisations in the financial services (e.g. Tesco Bank), retail (Ocado), public (Reducing Reoffending Partnership) and third (Dog’s Trust) sectors.
Cowry have developed a program to partner with academic institutions that offer programs in behavioural economics and behavioural science. So far they have partnered The University of Manchester, City University of London, Keele University, and Kingston University London.
The goal of the partnership is that our MSc students gain insights from someone working at the coalface of applied behavioural science; who knows about what clients demand and the challenges of applying behavioural science in organisations; and who has a sense of the market demand for behavioural science and up-coming areas in the industry.
An added benefit is that the partnership means that two of our MSc students will automatically be offered places on Cowry’s competitive Summer School. In addition, we will have the opportunity to nominate one of our students to receive a two-week period of work experience with Cowry.
The benefit for Cowry from this is that they will have a direct pipeline of well-trained behavioural scientists whom they can directly recruit to their graduate scheme. One key intention of the partnership with Stirling is to broaden this pipeline outside of London.
Sam Shand and Course Director David Comerford have worked out a model where Sam will deliver 4 guest lectures on applied behavioural science over the course of the academic year. Sam will also help to refine an existing assignment on the program - an experimental design project. Students will work with Sam and Prof Comerford to tailor the experiment we design so that it yields data that informs a live Cowry project.
In addition to the above, Sam will deliver a careers talk to students across the university on opportunities in Behavioural Science.
Moreover, Sam is exceptionally well placed to deliver on the above because Sam is a graduate of our MSc Behavioural Science at Stirling. At Stirling, Sam was jointly awarded our Research Based Learning Prize' - awarded for the best behavioural science dissertation and earned a distinction in his MSc. Prior to coming to Stirling, Sam spent the first 4 and half years of his career working in Organisational Change consultancy, primarily at the Pricewaterhouse Coopers consulting firm.
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Sam,
Really good to talk on Friday and to see you again.
I had a meeting with our head of school and he likes this idea. I see no reason not to go with option 3 - Scale. I'll be in touch to work out with you a set of lectures that suits us all and to brainstorm about the group project. You might remember the experiment on antibiotic disposal that we did as a class in the Evidence-Based Decision Making module. I think it would be great if you provided us with a real-world problem and our students could work with me (and maybe you) to design a survey experiment that speaks to that problem.
Kevin has to run your title past the higher ups but says there are precedents and as long as Cowry is not shown to be e.g. colluding with the Russian mafia it should go through no problem. Given that you would be involved in teaching / assessment the title would be "honorary lecturer". Has a formidable ring to it!
Let me know next steps - we have induction for our incoming students on Monday. It seems like a good motivator to flag at the induction that the summer school places and work experience will be offered this summer.
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks to Liz Barnes for pointing me to the following opportunity which overlaps with work that a many of us are already doing:
Institute for Social Marketing & Health C Open Quarterly Research Meeting
ISMH is a vibrant team of over 30 researchers at all career stages and has built up a national and international reputation since its foundation in 1980. ISMH is globally acknowledged as a leader in critical marketing research - the analysis of commercial marketing practices, regulation and societal impacts - as recognised by the Queens Anniversary Prize for higher education in 2014.
We hold quarterly face to face meetings of our full team and wed like to open our next one up to colleagues from around the university to have the opportunity to get to know more about each others research interests and develop potential future collaborations. Our areas of work, broadly, are:
 analysis of the impact of commercial marketing (pricing, availability, promotion, products), and consumption, of unhealthy commodities on the health and behaviour of people, families, communities and wider society;
 evaluating the impact (or potential impact) of public policy on health and wellbeing, public services and inequalities;
the development and evaluation of culturally sensitised behaviour change interventions to improve health and wellbeing informed by social marketing and other relevant evidence.
More recently, we also have a programme of work focused on long-covid.
We are therefore inviting you to join us on Tuesday 29th August between 11 and 3pm (on campus, venue TBC). You can register to attend here, just so we can keep track of numbers and dietary needs:
https://forms.gle/iUMdUmYAFXNSdXSE9
The session will include:
 Networking with colleagues
Themed roundtables to share research interests and develop future ideas/collaborations
Presentations from ISMH colleagues on our latest projects and topics of broad interest such as approaches to public involvement, communications/framing, working with marginalised populations, emerging research designs/approaches and international collaboration.
Lunch will be provided and we will share a more detailed agenda nearer the time.

The agenda will be tightened up but here are some items:
1. Events: Sept 14 Behavioural Science Centre Reunion event - Stirling Court Room and Stirling Court Hotel September 14th. Invites are being sent as we speak. Interested to hear suggestion on format given the we-don't-know-each-other-yet-but-we-all-have-something-in-common nature of the participants. It feels like this is one where a more participatory approach would work well. Ideas very welcome!
Oct 20 Behavioural Insights for Regulation: Keynote speaker is academic and policy advisor Amelia Fletcher (UEA).
1. Staffing - the economics division has openings at Prof / Assoc Prof level and at SL / Lecturer level. The prof level job is listed as being in the environmental / sustainability space. We are keen to strengthen the behavioural base of our faculty so suggestions welcome.
Teaching buy-in: Related to the above, teachers on our MSc Behavioural Science program have been flat out for the past few years. If anyone knows of PhD students who are looking for teaching experience and are conversant in quants and / or experimental social / cognitive psychology then we are keen to hear about them.
1. Funding opportunities.
1. Outreach and dissemination opportunities.

Subject: Lifespan Lab - Tobii Eye-Tracker Training
Hi everyone,
We are planning to have Tobii conduct the second part of the training on how to use the new Lifespan Lab eye-tracker towards the end of August when everyone is back from leave, but before teaching begins.
The first part of the training was a brief intro during the opening of the lab, but there's no need to have attended the first part to be able to attend the second part!
If you would be interested in attending, please fill out this survey to indicate what times you could do. Please also feel free to forward this message on to anyone you know who might be interested but isn't on the list (including people in other departments).
https://www.when2meet.com/?20409116-jGPOZ
Please fill out the survey by 5 pm on Friday (June 23) so that I can coordinate a time with Tobii. Many thanks!
Very best wishes,
Sharon
