Bien amicalement Lionel De James Muir (Bravo à lui pour son article dans Science sur l'Intensification écologique) Notre nouveau membre, le Prof El Sayed a aussi publié sur ce thème, y compris un article avec mon ancien doctorant Mohammed Al Amoudi d'Arabie Saoudite qui au début des années 1980 a étudié la résistance à la salinité en début d'élevage, et les effets de l'ingestion de sel. Quelques années plus tard, alors que je conseillais pour la FAO le projet d'aquaculture Gouvernement saoudien/FAO à Jeddah, j'ai eu le grand privilège de pouvoir réaliser un échantillonage de mossambicus/spilurus que nous avions élevé en cage, et de les soumettre à un test pyrocarbonique (également connu sous le nom de barbecue) et de vérifier que bien que nous n'ayons pas à disposition de tilapia d'eau douce comme témoin, ils étaient tout à fait délicieux, tout à fait comparables à la dorade méditerranéenne par exemple. Pas de doute que l'expérience a été renouvelée depuis. Les coût de production de l'époque posaient un peu problème, mais je pense néanmoins qu'il y a de bonnes perspectives. De: Karen L. Une question à destination de nos collègues d'Afrique de l'Ouest: il y a des espèces comme le S. melanotheron en Afrique de l'Ouest, qu'on trouve dans des lagunes saumâtres. Existe-t-il des références récentes sur l'élevage de ces espèces, hormis la description du système "acadja" ? J'ai entendu des commentaires similaires sur le goût du tilapia, ainsi qu'une meilleure texture, mais n'ai pas connaissance de tests en aveugle réalisés. Je soupçonne que le meilleur goût n'est pas un "don" des eaux salées et que le off-flavor peut survenir quelque soit la salinité. Des tests gustatifs avancé sont une OBLIGATION pour tout producteur qui commercialise à l'export et devrait aussi être mis en place pour la commercialisation locale, pour éviter la mauvaise réputation que le poisson d'aquaculture véhicule parfois. Parmi les nombreuses espèces de tilapia (environ 106 en tout), O. mossambicus, O. spilurus et Tilapia zilli sont les plus tolérants à la salinité en conditions d'élevage, ainsi bien sûr qu'un certain nombre d'hybrides comme les souches de tilapia rouge Taiwan et Red Florida, deux espèces qu'il ne serait pas raisonnable d'(introduire en Afrique. Il y a de nombreuses études sur l'élevage de ces hybrides rouges, malheureusement pas utiles pour nous en Afrique. Juste pour ajouter. Il a été décrit quelque part (mais je ne me souviens plus de la référence) qu'un stock de O. mossambicus se reproduisait en conditions hypersalines dans l'estuaire de St. Lucie (75 ppt). J'essaie de trouver la référence. Il est toutefois clair que toutes les souches de mossambicus ne présentent pas la même résistance à la salinité. Notre expérience montre que la souche Kasinthula de la partie aval de la rivière Shire au Malawi résistait difficilement après 4 minutes dans un bain salé à 3% (30 ppt), sachant que l'eau de mer est à 35ppt=3,5%. Il existe des populations non seulement de O. mossambicus à Sainte Lucie mais aussi d'autres espèces comme Oreochromis spilurus, Tilapia rendalli, et Tilapia zilli peut-être même d'autres qui existe dans la nature à des salinité >30ppt à partir desquelles il devrait être possible de construire des souches pour l'aquaculture. La partie sur laquelle je ne suis pas sûr est la suivante. Les fermiers qui élèvent des tilapia en eau de mer ou saumâtre prétendent que leur produit a meilleur goût que le poisson élevé en eau douce. Je n'ai pas eu la chance de pouvoir goûter des poissons élevée en eau marine ou saumâtre et en eau douce dans des conditions comparables (aliment, gestion eau, etc.) donc je ne suis pas en mesure de conclure. Je ne sais pas si certains ici ont un avis ? Je ne suis pas sûr du nombre et des caractéristiques des élevages commerciaux de tilapia salin en Afrique, peut être que Will le sait. Comme l'eau douce mondiale devient un bien précieux, l'aquaculture va nécessairement se retourner vers les milieux marins et saumâtres. Notez aussi qu'il y a une étude de résistance à la salinité conduite au Koweit. Outre le O. mossambicus et ses dérivés, O. spirulis est un autre candidat potentiel. Toutefois, il y a déjà des fermiers dans la région de Rufiji qui élèvent du tilapia en eau marine jusqu'à 1 kg, à ce qu'on nous a rapporté.Nous ne devrions donc pas avoir de difficulté à faire du 400-500 g. En général à 10-20% d'eauy de mer, les femelles grossissent plus vite qu'en, eau douce. La conversion du tilapia est aussi destinée en Tanzanie à maîtriser la reproduction et est envisagée comme un élevage commercial future. De: James Miller Chers tous, Nous élevons des tilapias en cage au Caraibes depuis les années 70, lorsque j'étais à l'Université de Porto Rico. Nous avons acclimaté les tilapias (O. niloticus...) en bacs en trois étapes jusqu'à la pure eau de mer puis les avons transférés en cages en pleine mer. Je ne me rappelle pas des détails, mais nous avons obtenu des croissances de 2,5 g/j/poisson autant que je me souvienne.... Nous avons aussi eu de nombreux problèmes de fouling et certains tilapias présentaient des croissances algales sur les opercules. Tous cela était du travail pionnier... Peut-être que quelqu'un du ministère des pêche a accès à ces données, car moi je ne l'ai plus. Toutefois, je vous encourage à persévérer... l'élevage du tilapia en eau marine élimine le problème de la reproduction, mais est-ce que les femelles grossiront aussi vite que les mâles ? Bonne chance dans votre recherche, Jim From: James Muir Our new member Prof El Sayed has also published on this topic, including a paper with my former PhD student Mohammed Al Amoudi from Saudi Arabia, who in the early 1980s had investigated early rearing salinity tolerance, and the effects of dietary salt intake. A few years later while in FAO providing technical backup to the Saudi Govt/FAO marine aquaculture project in Jeddah, I had the great privilege of sampling some of the well grown mossambicus/spilurus we were raising there in cages, subjecting them to a controlled super-charcoal exposure trial (otherwise known as a barbecue) and can confirm, though without freshwater tilapia controls to hand, that they were remarkably good, at least the equivalent of Mediterranean sea bream, for example. No doubt the experiment has been repeated since. Our production cost profiles at the time were a bit challenging, but I think there's likely to be good scope ahead... One question for our colleagues in West Africa: there are species such as S. melanotheron in W. Africa that are found in brackish water lagoons. Can some recent references be suggested for these species in culture conditions beyond the description of the "acadja systems"? I have heard similar claims about the taste of tilapia as well as improved texture from saltwater but know of no blind taste tests that have been conducted. I suspect that better flavor is not a "given" from saline waters and off-flavor can occur from any salinity. Advance flavor testing is a MUST for any large producer who is selling for export and should be also implemeted for local sales to prevent the reputation that farmed fish taste bad. Among the various species of tilapia (some 106 or so in all) the O. mossambicus, O. spilurus and Tilapia zilli seem the most saline tolerant under farm conditions, and of course several hybrids such as the Taiwanese Red tilapia and the Florida Red tilapia of which the latter two (hybrids) would not be wise to introduce into African waters. Loads of studies are available on the culture of red hybrids in sea water - not helpful to us in Africa at all. Just to add. It's been documented somewhere I cant find the reference that a gene pool of O. mossambicus spawn in the wild in St. Lucia Estuary under hyper-saline conditions of 75ppt. I'm trying to find the source literature. While it's quite clear that not all O. mossambicus are equal in terms of salinity tolerance. Our experience has shown the Kasinthula strain of O. mossambicus from the lower Shire River in Malawi struggle to maintain balance after less than 4 minutes during a salt bath in a 3% salt solution or 30ppt, now sea water at 35ppt = 3.5% salinity. Discrete gene pools of probably not only O. mossambicus in St. Lucia but others such as Oreochromis spilurus, Tilapia rendalli, and Tilapia zilli perhaps even others may exist in the wild in saline conditions >30ppt from which to draw founder populations for further selection for aquaculture. The part I'm not sure about is this. Farmers who raise tilapias in sea water/brackish water claim the end product tastes superior to sweet water farmed tilapia. I've not had the luxury of sampling both sea water/brackish water vs. fresh water farmed tilapia reared under the same conditions, feed, management, water exchange and purged, so unfortunately I cannot comment on this claim. Perhaps those with experience can come in here? Not sure how many and the details of any commercial saline tilapia aquaculture projects in Africa, maybe Will may know. Regards Ramon M. As the world's fresh water becomes more valuable, aquaculture will most likely turn towards brackish and sea water. Also note that there was a study of salinity tolerance of tilapias done in Kuwait. Besides the O. mossambicus and its derivatives, O. spirulis is another interesting candidate. Best wishes Matt Slater From: Flower Msuya Dear all, Converting freshwater Tilapia into marine is a topic that is earmarked at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Zanzibar, Tanzania and a student will be doing this probably this year. However, there are farmers in Rufiji area who grew Tilapia in marine water for up to 1kg and we were informed of this. One would be confortable with 400 - 500 kg. Usually with 10 - 20% seawater the females grow faster than in freshwater. Coverting Tilapia is earmarked in Tanzania also as a way of curbing the overreproduction and is looked into the future for possible commercial farming. Flower From: James Miller Everyone, We raised tilapia in cages in the Caribbean back in the 70's when I was with the University of Puerto Rico. We acclimitized the tilapia (O. niloticus....) in tanks in 3 steps to full sea water and put them into cages in full sea water. I don't recall all the details but we did achieve growth of 2.5 g/fish per day as I recall ......We also encountered lots of fouling problems and some of the tilapia developed algae growth on opercular flaps. All of this was early work .....perhaps someone in the Marine Sciences Dept has access to this early work as I do not. Nevertheless I encourage you to continue your work....raising tilapia in sea water will eliminate the reproduction problem.....but will the females grow as fast as males?
