Hi dear members of the SARNISSA Network, I would like just to say, according to Mr Victor's question, that aquaculture production in Africa can't be increased if african countries if we don't have clear objectives. A part of answer to your question is in your mail, i.e to encourage participative approach for Research-Development research in Fishery and Aquaculture which give the best transfering results. But frist, african countries have to define quantitative objectives of aquaculture production through a considered period in which all the scientific potential on eahc country has to be use for searching appropriate systems and technics for improving the usual way or fish farming. Anotherways, African countries have to change strategiees, so tobuild an research which resolves and answers to the aquaculture development need (for rural and industrial farms). This may be done locally with, in first intention with national funds even few there are. After and naturally we can get serious international help which will reinfurce what is building. I think, that is the sure way to develop veritably aquaculture in AFrica. I would like to remember a citation of one African writer who says: " one who sleeps on the neighbor's sleeping mat, sleeps on the floor". The problem, otfen in Africa , is that Research is uspstream and Development downstream. We need to inverse the trend in oerder to have a research system in aquaculture which resolves constraints in fish farming systems. When the international community will see a real awareness of African and a new orientation of research for the development, funding will follow. And you'll see that the rates of transfer and adoption will be higher. African continental or regional agricultural organisations like FARA, CORAF/WECARD, etc., would have to encourage different governments in this way Thank you and I hope to have contributed to enrich the debate. Salut à tous, Plusieurs bailleurs de fonds et décideurs politiques en Afrique montrent souvent peu d’empressement à appuyer la recherche en pisciculture / pêches, arguant que bien d’informations techniques déjà disponibles restent encore dans les tiroirs, ou alors que les thèmes abordés par certains chercheurs ne répondent pas du tout aux besoins des utilisateurs. Les approches participatives ou en partenariat ont ainsi été développées, et ont permis d’accroître le taux d’adoption des innovations ; cependant, le coût de mise en œuvre de ces approches reste élevé, et les budgets plutôt restreints des Etats Africains relativement aux nombreuses sollicitations ne permettent guère d’envisager d’étendre ces approche à l’échelle nationale. Selon vous, comment (i) améliorer l’accès des résultats de la recherche aux utilisateurs, et partant (ii) attirer et gagner davantage de fonds pour la recherche appliquée. Cordialement, Victor
