The ORS awards scheme is designed to attract high quality research
students to UK Universities. The awards are open to overseas students
undertaking a research degree and may be held in any field of study.
Each award covers the difference between the tuition fee for a UK/EU
graduate student and that chargeable to an overseas graduate student.
The awards do not cover maintenance expenses. Subject to satisfactory
progress, the awards are tenable for up to three years. The University
of Stirling is now seeking applications for the 2006-2007 academic
session.
Applicants must be liable to pay tuition fees at the rate applicable to
overseas students and must have been offered admission to a full-time
MPhil/PhD research programme of study or currently be pursuing such a
programme. They must be of outstanding academic merit and research
potential. Other factors such as financial status, nationality and the
proposed field of study are not taken into account.
The process for applying for ORS awards has been delegated to each
institution, and consequently the timetable has changed, and is outlined
below. Guidance for applicants is attached. Application forms are now
available from the Research Office (Cottrell 3B1) - or contact

The aim of FameLab is to encourage scientists to inspire and excite
public imagination with a vision of science in the 21st century. We are
searching for the new faces of UK Science who will be able to develop
their ideas and presentation skills for a TV audience. At the auditions
you only have 3 minutes to impress the judges by giving an entertaining
and original talk that is scientifically accurate but also engaging to a
non-scientific audience.
To enter FameLab you must be at least 21 years old and working in
science. This includes private and public sector employees, technicians
and anyone working in the fields of science, technology, engineering or
maths. The competition aims to provide new opportunities for scientists
to develop their skills as communicators.

The Society for Experimental Biology (SEB) is offering a bursary for a
postgraduate student/early careers scientist to gain 4 weeks' training
in its Education & Public Affairs (EPA) Office during the period 13
March to 7 April 2006. The placement will be suitable for someone who is
seeking a career in science journalism, scientific administration, or as
a publicity officer. Applicants with some experience of non-academic
science writing will be given priority.
Working under the guidance of the EPA officer, the main activities will
be:
4 weeks' experience with the EPA office at Lancaster University (3
weeks) and Canterbury (1 week). Accommodation and travel costs are
included in the bursary.
To write press releases for the SEB's Annual Main Meeting (University of
Kent 3 - 7 April 2006) in advance of the Meeting. You will be expected
to review the meeting abstracts, talk to session convenors and interview
speakers in order to produce interesting, eye-catching press notices.
To send out the press releases to the media using Alphagalileo,
Eurekalert and email.
To act as the Press officer at the SEB Meeting: to attend relevant talks
and visit posters, write additional news for release during the meeting,
meet visiting journalists, organise interviews, take photos etc.
To assist in the organisation and running of the EPA programme during
the Meeting.
To write an article (in the style of New Scientist) on a topic presented
at the meeting for the SEB's news bulletin (optional).
To write a short post-meeting report.

science communication (previous winners have secured jobs as news
editors, science writers and publicity officers). To register your
interest for this post please email the EPA officer, Sarah Blackford,
with your CV highlighting your science communication skills and stating
how this post will help your career. Email: s.blackford(a)lancaster.ac.uk.

Melanie Quin [melanie.quin(a)ecsite-uk.net]
ecsite-uk, the national network of science centres and museums, together
with EPSRC invites you, your post-docs and PhD students to communicate
your research through 'Meet the Scientist'.
Meet the Scientist offers:
- A real opportunity to take on the challenge of communicating what you
do to a non-scientific audience
- Transferable-skills training from experienced science communicators in
a relaxed and informal setting
- Access to and examples of a number of different strategies and
techniques that could be used to communicate your science
- An opportunity to meet and work alongside scientists from other fields
- A chance to get a new perspective on your work.
On 16-17 January, the Royal Museum, Edinburgh, is hosting a two-day
training event for prospective 'Meet the Scientist' researchers.
Practical follow-up from a mentor will then help you to develop your
skills to enable you to communicate your science in a way you feel
comfortable with. The museum will also provide guidance about the type
of event and audience to aim for and practical help setting it up - this
could include advice in applying for an EPSRC PPE award.
The only cost will be your time: the EPSRC is investing in this
initiative to support the Council's mission of improving public
awareness of leading research and its impact on society.
If you or a member of your research group is interested, contact
info(a)ecsite-uk.net for more information.
RSVP now to register your interest and we'll send more details.
Yours sincerely
Dr Melanie Quin
Director, ecsite-uk

> An IS working group has shortlisted Reference Manager, EndNote, WriteNote and RefWorks for further evaluation., and demonstrations of the first 3 from our supplier will take place on Wednesday 7 December from 2 - 5 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room.
>
> There will be demo systems to test and this is an opportunity for departmental staff and/or students to have input into the choice of the next system. Please let me know if you would like to attend - even for part of the session.

I know most of you will be turning to thoughts of holidays soon, but
attached is the draft timetable for the Spring Semester's series of SGRS
Seminars to allow you to study and decide which you would like to attend
in the new year. We have a busy schedule with many of the sessions from
this Semester being repeated for the benefit of new students and those
who may have missed them first time round.
I hope we will continue and improve on the level of interest shown
throughout the Autumn series and you will enjoy the sessions we have
planned. The final programme will be published in the next few weeks,
with venues and timings being confirmed, and I will be starting taking
bookings for the SGRS seminars in January. You can however, book up for
any of the Information Services sessions or the Teaching and Learning
sessions now by contacting the Information Services helpdesk on x 7250 (

1. 'Managing and Leading Teams'
Peter Braidwood, Training and Development Unit
Meet at Swimming Pool Entrance
01/12/05, 1pm - 5pm
Managing and Leading teams has always been a challenge and especially so
in the modern work environment. With work practices, team members
expectations and responsibility areas constantly changing - it is
necessary for future line managers and leaders to have opportunities to
learn about, reflect upon and apply new approaches to the task of
managing and leading teams. A blend of theory and practical exercises
will utilised indoors and out (weather dependant).
There are still places available for this interesting and fun session.
