We have two seminars running next week:
1.
'An Introduction to English for Academic Purposes'
Anne Lawrie, Centre for English Language Teaching (CELT), Institute of
Education
1st November 2005 2pm - 4pm
Cottrell 2A9,
This session will be run as a workshop and will raise students'
awareness of the conventions of academic writing through small group
discussions. The areas of academic writing which will be highlighted
will include the importance of inter and intra paragraph linking;
cohesion of texts through the use of cohesive devices; summarising;
synthesising information from different source material; critical
analysis and thinking.
A secondary topic for this session will be the potential problems and
misunderstandings between a supervisor and his/her supervisee due to a
lack of cultural understanding between them. Expectations from each may
differ due to this. Through small and whole group discussion, possible
solutions may be found.
2.
Qualitative Research'
Gill Hubbard, Nursing & Midwifery
3rd November 2005, 2pm - 4pm
Cottrell 2A9

Nominations are now being sought for 4 research student representatives
to sit on the SGRS Steering Group.
All research students are members of SGRS and will be represented on the
SGRS Steering Group by one of the successful candidates. The Steering
Group, which reports to the Research and Knowledge Transfer Committee,
meets formally twice a semester to develop and guide the activities of
SGRS. The elected representatives will work closely with the Director
and Research Services Officer in planning SGRS events to meet the needs
of research students.
It is hoped that the elected representatives will reflect the range of
academic disciplines across the Faculties, and will include at least one
first year student and one part-time student.
I attach a nomination form for your use. Completed forms should be
returned to the Research Office (Cottrell 3B1)by Friday 28th October
2005, 5pm.
In the event that more than four nominations are received, a ballot will
be held in the week beginning Monday 31st October 2005

We have two seminars running next week (as well as the Statistics
session on Wednesday)
'Working with your Supervisor'
Ian Simpson, School of Biological & Environmental Sciences
Cottrell B2, 2pm - 4pm
19th October 2005
PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE OF VENUE FOR THIS SEMINAR
(I have been advised of a mix up in timetabling which will affect a
number of seminars. Keep checking the graduate list and web page for
updates)
Admire them or despair at them, every PhD student has a supervisor who's
trying to help you along the path to your doctorate. How do you the
student get the right information from them? Should you brow beat the
poor overworked supervisor into a pulp to extract guidance or sit
patiently by their door for the wisdom to ooze from underneath? This
seminar tries to open the old can of worms about student-supervisor
relationships in an attempt to identify some short cuts for the new and
even more experienced supervisor.
This session will help you to manage your supervisor for success;
highlight difficulties that you may experience; to identify methods of
best practice and includes an introduction to the supervisors view on
best management practices; who has responsibility for what; examine the
relationship between student and supervisor; identify short cuts.
THERE ARE PLACES AVAILABLE ON THIS SESSION -TO BOOK EMAIL ME OR THE
GRADLIST.
Bibliographies
Lisa Haddow; Information Services, Library Liaison & Training
Library - S21, 2pm - 3pm
20th October 2005
This session serves as a very basic background and introduction, for
Postgraduate research students, to the world of bibliographies. The
problems of citation and reference will be discussed, and some of the
solutions that do not use specialised software.
The session will also examine how specialised software, ProCite in
particular, can help to produce references and citations that are
consistent with common standards. Note the session does not look at how
to use ProCite
