Just to drawn your attention to the fact that there will be a 5 day UK
GRADschool at Stirling ( in the Management Centre) from June 24th - 29th
Any penultimate or final year doctoral student is eligible to attend a
national GRADschool. ( If places are available, it would be worth arguing
for a place if you would be approaching the end of your first year of
study).
These courses are free to students funded by AHRB, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, MRC,
NERC or PPARC . For other students a five day course costs £655 +VAT
(£114.62 VAT)
5-day GRADschool
The traditional 5-day GRADschools are the most popular choice of course,
allowing the most time for 'digesting' what you are learning by individual
reflection and discussion in your working groups. They provide a rounded
programme of both personal and career development.
Personal development focuses on communication skills, presentation skills,
networking and creativity as well as the overriding theme of teamworking.
Career development encompasses both your PhD and your future career. Group
discussion sessions cover issues relating to the progress of your PhD, along
with suggestions on helping you gain the motivation and skills to complete
successfully. CVs for academic and non-academic posts are discussed, and a
mock interview is normally a major feature on one of the days.
Further details and application forms can be obtained from:

Subject: {SPAM?} Survey
Title: A survey for future studies.
Dear Sir/Madam
We are conducting a survey on your opinions of studying for a
postgraduate degree (Master) in the future. The purpose of this survey is to
obtain some general information about the demand for postgraduate studies.
The survey will take less than 5 minutes to complete and any data gathered
from this survey is of course treated confidentially and your participation
would be very much appreciated.
We hope that you are able to participate and reply before 26 of March.
Please fill in the survey's questionnaire at this link

Thank you very much in advance for supporting the research!

Subject: Sage Journals
Hi Wilma,
Could you possibly let all postgrads know that Sage publications is holding
a three month open on-line access period to a number of its journals just
now. I think it ends at the end of the month. It is a really good
opportunity to download for free any articles that the university does not
have in the library and may be of use to researchers. The release is as
follows:
_____
Free Access via Ingenta Select to SAGE Publications' Electronic Journals
from 15th January to 31st March 2004 To register and see a complete list of
the journals available, visit www.sagepublications.com/freeaccess

Dear All
The 2004 Earth Systems Science Summer School at Reading is detailed below.
I'm reliably informed by David Hopkins that previous events have proved
extremely valuable to our PhD students, in particular, to those interested
in ecological and environmental processes.
Jacqueline
ES4: Earth Systems Science Summer School
13-24 September 2004
NERC funded
In its 4th year, ES4 will take place at the Department of Meteorology,
University of Reading
This "Summer" School is aimed at a broad range of environmental
researchers at the start of their careers, including first and second
year PhD students and those from research institutes. It is intended to
stimulate the students' research by showing the broader context in
which it takes place and to introduce opportunities for later
inter-disciplinary research.

Hello everyone,
As part of the English Department's Postgraduate Conference arrangements, we
will be holding a ceilidh on Saturday 27th March from 8pm -1am at the Uni
Management Centre.
The ceilidh is open to everyone - postgrad, undergrad and staff - and is a
great chance for all PhD students to socialise, not only with Stirling
postgrads, but with research students from all over the UK and beyond! Not
all of our delegates are researchers in English studies, so you never know
who you might meet!
Our Ceilidh band is Skelpit-Lug, who have an excellent reputation, so it
promises to be a really good night.
Admission is £5, and tickets are available from Jessica Dyson or Jennifer
Walters in Pathfoot Room B22, or you can pay at the door.
For more information, contact outsidersconference(a)stir.ac.uk
<mailto:outsidersconference@stir.ac.uk>
Hope to see some of you there. Bring your friends!
All the best,
Jessica.
