Dear all,
It's safe to say that this week's announcement requires no spoiler alert...
I'm not sure whether or not we have a speaker for tomorrow, as the person who signed up on Doodle has yet to provide a title or confirm their attendance. However, there will be drinks and nibbles as usual! There may or may not be a talk.
Christine.

Hello all,
Just to let you know that BERG meetings will start up again next week, Wednesday 12 February. We will probably start with a fairly relaxed introductory meeting, but I'll circulate further details closer to the time.
Our slots for this semester are being snapped up fast, so if you want to present something this semester (or invite someone) then you please act soon! At the moment we have the following dates still available:
12 February (if you are feeling really keen!)
19 February
5 March
9 April
If you want to sign up for any of these then please go to the Doodle poll at: http://doodle.com/urm8qhei232if245
Thanks to those of you who have already signed up for a slot! If you could send me a brief title/topic for your presentation for our programme that would be much appreciated.
Christine.

Dear all,
Our BERG meetings will be getting going again once semester starts, so I have set up a Doodle sign-up sheet so that people can pick a slot:
http://doodle.com/urm8qhei232if245
Please do sign up if you haven't presented anything at BERG recently! And let me know if there is anyone you would like to invite from further afield. We do have a small budget which can usually cover travel costs and hospitality for external speakers.
The meetings will be at the usual time and place: Wednesdays from 5.30pm in the Psychology Common Room.
Christine.

Dear all
Delighted to say that SCAB - the Scottish Conference on Animal Behaviour will be held in Edinburgh this year- Saturday 29th March.
Please see further details below. I hope we can get a good Psychology representation.
Several of you are asking about BERG meetings - they will start up again in semester, with Christine kindly organising them.

Dear all,
The annual Scottish Conference on Animal Behaviour will be held at the University of Edinburgh this year, on Saturday the 29th of March. This is a small conference with relaxed atmosphere, and a good opportunity for students and post docs to present their work.
Anyone wishing to present a talk or a poster can submit titles by emailing the organisers at SCAB.the.conference(a)gmail.com<mailto:SCAB.the.conference@gmail.com> by Friday the 14th of March. Please specify which form of presentation you would be interested in applying for. The preference in talks is given to students. We welcome titles on any aspect of animal behaviour, whether you observed it in lab or field, and whether you've used a microscope or a pair of binoculars to see it. We are happy to hear it all!
General registration ends on Friday the 22nd of March. The cost of the conference is £15, and includes tea/coffee, lunch and a wine reception. The fee can be payed at the door, in cash, as unfortunately we won't be able to take checks or bank transfers.
Please find attached the poster containing this information. We encourage you to circulate this announcement to any of your colleagues who might be interested, and if possible to print the poster and stick it up somewhere visible in your department.
You can also find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SCAB2014?ref=profile
Hope to see many of you in Edinburgh!
Best regards,
Maarit Maenpaa

Dear colleagues (inc. members of the BERG, Jimmy Turnbull, Aquaculture, and Owen Adams)
Paul Dudchenko and I have been asked to respond to the Understanding Animal Research public consultation on a Concordat on Openness on the Use of Animals in Research in the UK.
The concordat has been drafted by a consortium of 40 organisations involved with life sciences in the UK (which includes broad representation, e.g. pharmaceutical companies, research councils, BIS and animal welfare organisations). It sets out four commitments which signatories will make. These are:
1. We will be clear about when, how and why we use animals in research
2. We will enhance our communications with the media and the public about our research using animals
3. We will be proactive in providing opportunities for the public to find out about research using animals
4. We will report on progress annually and share our experiences
The consultation closes is 16 December 2013 and is in the form of a survey. Full details of the consultation are available here http://www.understandinganimalresearch.org.uk/policy/concordat-on-openness-….
The response questionnaire is to be completed by individuals rather than groups, and hence I shall respond as an individual. In case you are interested, in a nutshell - I am very supportive of the principles of the concordat, but I am not clear of the mechanism to get people to commit and adhere to them. I expect the devil will be in the detail, and will suggest templates are put in place to ensure consistency in reporting.
There are some 66 questions with Likert scale responses, plus space for open comments. If you have views, please complete the questionnaire yourself (I suggest you get the coffee and biscuits to hand first!).
Best, Hannah
