PhD position in evolutionary primatology
This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious PhD student to join the Swiss
National Science Foundation project “EVOPHON: Evolution of Phonetics and
Phonology” (Principle Investigator: Dr. Steven Moran). The successful candidate will
join an interdisciplinary team of researchers working on the evolutionary origins of
language. We aim to shortlist applicants with an MSc or MA degree, a relevant training
background (evolutionary biology, primatology, phonetics, linguistics, or similar),
strong interest in animal communication and language, and (advanced) data analysis
and scientific writing skills. Previous experience with (bio-) acoustic analysis is a
strong plus. Deadline 28 May.

Subject: Survey Circulation Request: Detecting Chimpanzee Emotion
Good Afternoon Sarah and Pawel,
I’m hoping you can help me circulate my questionnaire through BERG for data collection for my MSc dissertation project. Please could you forward this to the group? In the study, I’m aiming to find out whether humans can detect the emotional content of chimpanzee emotional displays.
I would like to invite anyone over the age of 18 who is interested to take part in an online survey that should take approximately 15 – 20 minutes to complete. I’m looking for both participants that have experience working with non-human primates (for example, in a caretaking or research capacity) and participants without experience working with primates. I hope you can spare the time to help. I’d also really appreciate it if anyone could send this questionnaire on to anyone else outside of BERG who has experience working with primates and might be interested in taking part.
The ethical approaches of this project have been approved through the University of Stirling General University Ethics Panel.
Please click on this link to the online survey: https://stirlingpsych.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9RlNC3FAqQLtmzI<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fstirlingp…>
Many thanks,
Catie Johnston

Dear BERGers,
The Ratchetcog research group at the University of Stirling is putting on the Culture Conference 2021: "Evolutionary Perspectives on Culture" virtually this year! This is great news for yourself and colleagues that are interested in presenting at a conference on cultural evolution that is 1. Free, 2. offers small funding awards for presenters, 3. comparatively small and discussion-oriented, 4. still hosts an international audience, and 5. includes an after-conference musical performance by Reely Jiggered!
As one of the conference organisers, I encourage you to submit a 300 word abstract by May 3! I would also appreciate it if you could circulate this information about the conference to any individuals/groups you think might be interested.
The conference is Jun 7-8, 2021. Link to submit an abstract and register: https://culture-conference.com/call-for-abstracts-2021/
To those BERGers who have already registered, thank you for joining us!
Cheers,
-Sarah
