BERG sign up

Dear BERGers I am delighted to say that I have just been informed that my application to the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) to support our BERG meetings has been successful. If you are not already a member please consider joining UFAW (http://www.ufaw.org.uk/ ). It is only £5 for students (£10 others) without access to their journal, Animal Welfare. By joining UFAW you can help make real, practical and lasting advances to animal welfare throughout the world - for companion animals, farm animals, animals used in research, captive wild animals and those living in the wild that are affected by human activities. Please do join to thank them for their continued support of us in BERG and to enhance animal welfare. It's that time of year again, and we are looking for people to volunteer for BERG meeting slots for this semester. The first meeting is on Wednesday 21st September at 5.30pm in 3A94 (Psychology common room). We shall use this meeting for introductions and updates from the summer. If you have any photographs (Peter?) or adventurous/exciting tales you'd like to share with us, please let me know and I'll coordinate. I have set up a Doodle sign-up, so just fill it out to indicate the week that you would like to present. Presenting at BERG is an excellent way to practice talks, hone your presentation skills, get feedback on grant application ideas, lead a discussion of a research paper etc. The sign up is here: http://doodle.com/grwa293pnf2aiaep When you sign up for a slot, please send me a brief title BEFORE 16th September so I can circulate the programme in advance. If you have new students who wish to be on the BERG mailing list, please send them this e-mail (and my earlier message on the Edinburgh talks on Living Links to Human Health, Mind and Medicine). To sign up to the BERG mailing list new folk must complete the form available here: http://lists.stir.ac.uk/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/berg Many thanks, Hannah Hannah M. Dates for diaries

Hello BERGers I am going to take over from Christine in organising the autumn series of BERG meetings. These will take place on Wednesdays from 17.30hrs in Stirling, and will likely start on Wednesday 21st September. I'll start soliciting offers of talks in early September - please get in touch before I have to beg/knobble folk! Another talk of interest is on 12th September, in Edinburgh. Prof Michael Huffman visiting from the University of Kyoto will give a talk entitled "Chimpanzee use of plants as medicine and the evolution of self-medication in primates and other animals" (exact location, and time confirmed later). His talk is part of the Wellcome Trust grant, "Living Links to Human Biology and Medicine", a joint project with Prof Andrew Whiten and Dr Mark Bowler (St Andrews), Stephen Woollard (RZSS) and myself. There will be another three talks on the overall theme of "Living Links to Human Biology, Mind and Medicine" which I'll send you details of, as and when. Thanks again to Christine, and speakers for a very successful BERG programme in Spring. Best, Hannah Hannah M. PSGB Spring meeting - Evolution of the Modern Primatologist
by Hannah Buchanan-Smith 25 Apr '11

25 Apr '11

See ne-mail below from Sean about the PSGB meeting. Do try to go (best to register!). Dear friends/colleagues Evolution of the Modern Primatologist (PSGB spring conference, Liverpool) is shortly upon us. I hope you can make it. Please encourage your colleagues and your students to attend. It will be great if we can get a really good turn-out representing Stirling at the meeting. We think it's going to be unlike any other psgb spring conference that you might have attended before. We've taken the best elements from previous meetings, put them into ours, and sprinkled on some more good bits. We have world class invited speakers, a great mix of experienced researcher and student talks and a fine (and numerous) complement of poster presentations. For the first time there's a dedicated poster session scheduled. Another first is for poster presenters to have a session of their own at the podium; each presenter will have a turn to briefly address the delegates to highlight their research. See the schedule on the website; there's something for everyone! And if that isn't enough lunch is complimentary on both days of the meeting; and our ice cream sponsor is providing free ice cream at the evening social event to go with the complimentary glass of wine from the evening venue hosts. How well will your monkey team do in the quiz? Oh, and all that comes after the wine reception in the splendour of the VGM. If you come a day before or stay the day after, you can go to Chester Zoo for free (must register for conference and with zoo in advance, see website for details). I hope you'll now agree that we're lining up a special meeting in Liverpool, both scientifically and socially. Please register in advance, if possible. See the conference website for further details https://sites.google.com/site/psgbliverpool2011/home <https://sites.google.com/site/psgbliverpool2011/home> and follow the conference on twitter (#livpsgb). Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Liverpool. Best wishes Sean -- Dr Sean J.
