[Apologies for cross-posting] Dear all, Our next Economics seminar will be given by Dr Gulbanu Kaptan, Associate Professor in Behavioural Decision Making at Leeds University Business School, taking place on Thursday, 14 May at 13:00 in the Court Room, Cottrell Building. Dr Kaptan's talk, titled 'Understanding and Reducing Household Food Waste: Towards Food Supply Chain Resilience', draws on her extensive research into consumer behaviour, food waste reduction, and supply chain resilience. Her work spans large-scale empirical studies and policy-facing applied research, and this seminar will be of broad interest to colleagues and students across economics, behavioural science, marketing, sustainability, and food systems. All staff and students are warmly welcome. Please do share this invitation with anyone who may be interested. We look forward to seeing you there. Seda Bio: Dr Gulbanu Kaptan is an Associate. Professor in Behavioural Decision Making at Leeds University Business School. Her research is on judgment and decision-making, with a particular focus on risk and benefit perception, communication, and behaviour change. Gulbanu’s interdisciplinary and applied research examines how organisations and consumers can reduce food waste, improve food safety behaviours, promote the adoption of novel foods, and improve resilience to disruptions in food supply chains. Gulbanu has served as Principal and Co-investigator on numerous UK and international research projects funded by organisations including UKRI, the Food Standards Agency, the European Commission, and the Swiss National Science Foundation. She has contributed to several advisory and policy initiatives, including the European Consumer Food Waste Forum; Zero Waste Scotland’s Advisory Group on Household Intervention Plans for Food Waste Reduction; and the University of Leeds Climate Plan Research Partnership Committee. Abstract: The seminar presents Gulbanu’s research on reducing household food waste, with a particular focus on her recent collaboration with the Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP). The project examined how socio-demographic characteristics and food management behaviours are associated with directly measured food waste in 1,783 UK households using waste compositional analysis. The seminar also summarises Gulbanu’s work for the European Consumer Food Waste Forum, which involved the collection and evaluation of 78 behaviour change interventions across the EU and beyond. This work aimed to identify the most effective, scalable, and efficient interventions to prevent food waste, providing evidence-based recommendations for European policymakers. The final part of the seminar introduces Gulbanu’s ongoing research on improving the resilience of UK food supply chains. Fifty years later, the field has reshaped economic theory and methodology, been absorbed into the mainstream, and institutionalized across business, finance, and public policy. This success invites reflection. Methodologically, behavioral economics has been challenged by replication failures, questions of external validity, and the difficulty of moving beyond lab experiments. Experiments often rely on WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) samples, raising doubts about cross-cultural generalizability. Theoretically, it often relies on a “list of biases” that risks being ad hoc and disconnected. It frequently considers neoclassical models as the benchmark and defines “biases” relative to the rational actor model, while underplaying processes of learning, adaptation, and preference formation. Critics also argue that the field sometimes overemphasizes individual cognition at the expense of cultural and institutional factors. Normatively, behavioral interventions raise issues about welfare measurement, autonomy, and democratic legitimacy. Policy applications confront questions of calibration, scalability, and the political economy constraints of the “choice architect.” Furthermore, the digital transformation (including algorithmic, personalized, and dynamic interfaces) enables new forms of targeting that raise urgent concerns about consumer sovereignty and manipulation. Topics of Interest This special issue invites contributions that reflect upon the state of behavioral economics and explore promising directions for future research. Title: From Simple to Complex: The Role of Behavioural Variability in Habitual Actions Bio: My research intersects social and health psychology by employing the biopsychosocial model to enhance intentions and translate them into behavioural initiation and maintenance by targeting intrapersonal, interpersonal, and community resources. My work focuses on promoting simple (e.g., calcium consumption) and complex health behaviours (e.g., fruit/vegetable intake, exercise) and engagement with health and social-care systems in communities that are traditionally defined as deprived. My research examines habits, affective processes, identity, resiliency, and community resources. Currently, my habit-related research is focused on higher-order nutrition habits and the intersection between health-habits and other automatic and controlled processes, such as self-regulation and identity. Dear PhD Lab, Here are a few important dates for this Autumn term. (1) Our PhD Lab (Wednesdays) * Reminder: Our PhD Lab will take place Wednesdays 11:00-13:30 * These will be in person but I have also created Teams meetings for the whole term for those who will join remotely. * You should also have received calendar invites (not sure if this worked for non-Stirling e-mails, though). * Timetabling allocated us rooms but they messed up and gave us rooms for Thursdays. I will update the calendar invites once we get the rooms for our actual slot (2) Stirling Management School (SMS) PhD Meetings (Wednesdays) * Our faculty also has started to have monthly PhD meetings (for all SMS PhD students) that you should attend * Ironically, these clash with our PhD lab, so we will lose three slots this term * The SMS PhD meetings take place every 3rd Wednesday each month, namely * 16/10/2024 – 11:30-12:30 * 20/11/2024 – 11:30-12:30 * 18/12/2024 – 11:30-12:30 (3) Our Economics seminar series (Thursdays) * If you are able to, you should definitely also attend our internal Economics seminar series * Participating in departmental series is an integral part of your doctoral training as it will allow you to develop a sense of how academic talks work (or fail!) to familiarise yourself with the norms in these sessions, and, ultimately, to develop your own taste and style for giving academic talks yourselves down the line. * I really hope for a strong showing of our group at these events throughout the term. Where: C.2B76 12:00-13:00 – Rachel Scarfe, Economics, University of Stirling, “Long-term trends in part-time work” Abstract: In this paper I document new stylised facts about part-time work. First, in many European countries, including the UK, there has been a substantial increase in the percentage of men working part-time since the 1990s. At the same time, the female part-time share has remained stable, or fallen slightly, so that the net effect is a slight increase in the overall part-time share. There has also been an increase in part-time work on the extensive margin; fewer people work very low hours and more work between 20 and 30 hours per week. Second, despite this increase in the quantity of part-time work, the difference in average hourly pay for part-time and full-time work has steadily decreased. In this paper I develop a model of the labour market which can explain both firms’ and workers’ preferences for part- and full-time work. In the equilibrium of the model, part- and full-time workers undertake different tasks. As a result, the model can endogenously generate earnings that are non-linear in hours worked and can explain the patterns seen in the data. 13:00-13:30 – buffet lunch 13:30-14:30 – Tekin Kose, HERU, University of Aberdeen, “Assessing Health and Wellbeing of Individuals with or without a Fibromyalgia Diagnosis: Evidence from the PACFiND Study” Abstract: This study aims to explore determinants of health status and wellbeing of individuals who have and have not received a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with people who had a fibromyalgia diagnosis, who was not diagnosed but met criteria for fibromyalgia, and who had pain that is not associated with fibromyalgia. The sample is selected from participants of a previous population survey in Scotland and responses are collected through a postal questionnaire. EQ[1]5D-5L and ICECAP-A survey questions are utilized for measurement of health and wellbeing levels of participants. Generalized linear models and Quantile regressions are used for empirical analysis. Findings reveal that there are no significant differences in average health statuses and wellbeing levels of individuals who have a diagnosis of fibromyalgia and who met the criteria for fibromyalgia without a diagnosis. However, individuals with other type of pain report higher average health and wellbeing indicators compared to those with fibromyalgia related diagnosis or symptoms. Participants who are unemployed due to an illness consistently report lower health and wellbeing. Single report significantly lower wellbeing. The Glasgow effect is observed in health and wellbeing measures of this sample. Frequent hospital visits are associated with lower health and wellbeing levels. Regardless of diagnosis status, individuals with fibromyalgia symptoms display similar health-related quality of life and wellbeing levels. Having a diagnosis of fibromyalgia would not improve health and wellbeing of patients.
