In a general sense in contemporary society, alternative energy is that which is produced without the undesirable consequences of the burning of fossil fuels, such as high carbon dioxide emissions, which is considered to be the major contributing factor of global warming according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. One of activities under this project is the promotion of alternate energy sources for coastal fishing in Southeast Asia, in collaboration with relevant SEAFDEC Member Countries. The activities include experiments and trials on the use of sails for small fishing boats. The promotion of wind energy to propel small fishing vessels was implemented under a training course held in Thailand and Myanmar. A formula to determine the size of a sail relative to the size of the boat was also introduced. The average speed of the sailed boat ranged from 15 to 20 km per hour. Furthermore, SEAFDEC Training Department has proposed projects on the Optimizing Energy Use in Capture Fisheries and Improving Safety Standard for Fishing Boats and Fishermen in Southeast Asia (Adaptation to a Changing Environment to Sustained Fisheries Production) for financial support from the Japanese Trust Fund, FAO and other interested donors (continue on page 4<http://www.seafdec.or.th/AFT/vol3/issue1/page4.html>) [cid:image007.gif@01CC213B.1404FCC0] ASEAN-SEAFDEC Conference on Sustainable Fisheries for Food Security Towards 2020 "Fish for the People 2020 : Adaptation to a Changing Environmental" Click here for Download Documents<http://www.ffp2020.org/> (continue on page 7<http://www.seafdec.or.th/AFT/vol3/issue1/page7.html>) "BIODIESEL FUEL" THE ALTERNATIVE ENERGY TO THE FUTURE ............................................................................... p.2<http://www.seafdec.or.th/AFT/vol3/issue1/page2.html> SOLAR HOT WATER FOR AQUACULTURE ...................... p.3<http://www.seafdec.or.th/AFT/vol3/issue1/page3.html> SENEGAL FISHERMEN TEST LIFE AND ENERGY SAVING 'BOAT KITES' ....................................................................... p.4<http://www.seafdec.or.th/AFT/vol3/issue1/page4.html> Natural Gas Boat to cut the addition of harmful pollutants in the air ............................................................................. p.5<http://www.seafdec.or.th/AFT/vol3/issue1/page5.html> FISH TECHNOLOGY DRAWS RENEWABLE ENERGY FROM SLOW WATER CURRENTS ................................................. p.6<http://www.seafdec.or.th/AFT/vol3/issue1/page6.html> Download Advance Fisheries Technology [PDF File]<http://www.seafdec.or.th/AFT/vol3/issue1/AFT_Journal_Vol3_Issue1.pdf> Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center/Training Department P.O.
