ALTERNATIVE ENERGY vs ALTERNATIVE FUELS
Alternative energy is an umbrella term that refers to any source of usable energy such as solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, etc. intended to replace fuel sources without the undesired consequences of the replaced fuels. In a general sense in contemporary society, alternative energy is that which is produced without the undesirable consequences of the burning of fossil fuels, such as high carbon dioxide emissions, which is considered to be the major contributing factor of global warming according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

SEAFDEC FUTURE PROJECT ON ENERGY USE IN FISHERIES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
SEAFDEC has implemented the Project on Responsible Fishing Technologies and Practices (Fishing in harmony with the nature) since 1998. One of activities under this project is the promotion of alternate energy sources for coastal fishing in Southeast Asia, in collaboration with relevant SEAFDEC Member Countries. The activities include experiments and trials on the use of sails for small fishing boats. The promotion of wind energy to propel small fishing vessels was implemented under a training course held in Thailand and Myanmar. A formula to determine the size of a sail relative to the size of the boat was also introduced. The average speed of the sailed boat ranged from 15 to 20 km per hour. Furthermore, SEAFDEC Training Department has proposed projects on the Optimizing Energy Use in Capture Fisheries and Improving Safety Standard for Fishing Boats and Fishermen in Southeast Asia (Adaptation to a Changing Environment to Sustained Fisheries Production) for financial support from the Japanese Trust Fund, FAO and other interested donors
