En francais au dessus /////////////////////////////////// Dear Members, Taking advantage of the OIE Global Conference on Aquatic Animal Diseases, being held this week in Ho-Chi-Minh City, Vietnam, OIE and FAO have today reviewed the information received to date regarding mortalities of fish in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Our initial suspicion that this disease might be EUS or Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (Infection with Aphanomyces invadans), an OIE listed disease, introduced in 2003 onto the African continent (Zambezi river basin) had led us to post a request for further information on the SARNISSA network. Along with information provided by the OIE focal point for aquatic animal diseases in the DRC, the information today points indeed to EUS, sufficient for FAO and OIE to launch an investigation, probably through the joint Crisis Management Centre for Animal Health (CMC-AH), based in Rome. This mission should enable the collection of samples which can then be analysed by the OIE Reference Laboratory for EUS in Bangkok, Thailand. If confirmed as being EUS, DRC will be asked to submit an immediate notification to the OIE, which should then trigger further action. I wish again to thank and acknowledge all members who submitted ideas, possible aetiologies and even papers and photographs, enabling us to reach this decision. Bastiaensen /////////////////////// Chers membres, Profitant de la Conférence Mondiale de l'OIE sur les maladies des animaux aquatiques, qui se tient cette semaine à Ho-Chi-Minh-Ville, Vietnam, l'OIE et la FAO ont aujourd'hui examiné les informations reçues à ce jour concernant les mortalités de poissons en République Démocratique du Congo. Notre soupçon initial que cette maladie pourrait être SUE ou syndrome ulcératif épizootique (infection avec Aphanomyces invadans), une maladie listée par l'OIE, introduite en 2003 sur le continent Africain (bassin du Zambèze) nous avait conduit à soumettre une demande pour plus d'informations sur le réseau SARNISSA. Avec les informations fournies par le point focal de l'OIE pour les maladies animales aquatiques en RDC, les informations semblent confirmer la présence de SUE. De toute manière, suffisante pour que la FAO et l'OIE puissent lancer une enquête, probablement à travers le Centre joint de Gestion de Crises - santé animale (CMC-AH), basé à Rome. Cette mission devrait permettre la collecte d'échantillons qui peuvent ensuite être analysés par le Laboratoire de Référence de l'OIE pour l'SUE à Bangkok, en Thaïlande. Si ceci s'avère être le SUE, la RDC sera invité à soumettre une notification immédiate à l'OIE, ce qui devrait alors déclencher de nouvelles mesures. Je tiens à nouveau à remercier et reconnaître les efforts de tous les membres de SARNISSA qui ont soumis des idées, des causes possibles et même des documents et des photographies, ce qui nous a permi de prendre cette décision.
