Hello Lionel, Au Nigeria, nous avons une production annuelle de Clarias gariepinus de 84000 tonnes qui a stimulé le développement de l'aquaculture ces 10 dernières années. Les gens apprécient particulièrement ce poisson chat, et développent même maintenant des produits fumés à valeur ajoutée afin de les exporter vers des marchés ethniques en Europe et aux Etats-Unis. Nous avons réalisé un manuel de reproduction et d'élevage du poisson-chat pendant que j'étais là bas. Je suis d'accord qu'il y a de nombreuses espèces intéressantes pour l'élevage en Afrique, mais nous avons choisi celles dont la biologie est connue, à croissance rapide et conversion alimentaire élevée... et pour lesquelles existe un gros marché. Il faut se rappeler que nous n'avons pas toujours les espèces que nous voudrions. In Nigeria we have a 84,000 ton annual production of Clarias garipinus that has driven the aquaculture industry for the past 10 years there. They have a particular appreciation for this catfish and they are now smoking it as a value added product and exporting it to ethnique markets in Europe and the US. We completed a Manual on Catfish Hatchery and Production while I was there.

I agree there are many good species in Africa for culture, but we have gone with those whose biology is known and has a fast rate of growth with efficient feed conversions....... and for which there is a big market. Remember we don't always have what we want in species.....The best species for culture is one that grows fast on feeds and reaches a marketable size before attaining sexual maturity.
