WHEN FOUND DEAD The first suspect in this case could be foul fishing using natural/synthetic poison. Fish killed using poison usually taste bitter. The first group of fishes to be heavily impacted by poison are usually scaly fishes. Others without scales are most likely catfishes and catfishes are air breathers and are able to take in atmospheric oxygen and avoid taking in the poison for some time. The laceration on the body of the fish could have been due to bite from other fishes or organisms eating then after death. 2. WHEN FOUND ALIVE It could equally be poison accumulated over a period of time. It may be parasitic infection particularly heavy load of ectoparasites. Whatever it is, there is need to do a proper investigation focusing on i. The fish samples affected ii. The water from which the fish was discovered iii. Benthos of the water iv. We received more details on the cases reported yesterday. These cases were reported to the fisheries authorities of the DRC last week, but date back to March, April and May and relate to the presence of wounds on some fish scales as ulcers; nature of illness to make their outer integuement haemorrhagic. This situation affects Congo River tributaries and some local lakes and rivers on the axis Bukama- Manono- Akoro; It dates from the months of March, April and May 2014 in the territory of Manono Tanganyika District and Territory Malemba Nkuku in the District of Upper Lomani in Katanga Province; 4 sites affected in the territory of Manono are: (i) Kankonde, Mpanda Lanzi; (ii) Kioni, Kasumba, Lukoje; (iii) Masania, Kashimwa; (iv) Kisesa, Kakamba, Sangwa. 4 sites affected in Malemba Nkulu are: (i) Muyumba, Kalenga, Bulongo, Kasumbu; (ii) Kakinga, Tohwe; (iii) Mubanga, Mwabanga, Kamukonda; (iv) Kibao, Ntemba, Kijiji, Kitongola, Mutombo and Lengalengwa all along the Congo River.

Any additional information on the infectious nature or not?? this episode would be highly appreciated.Also is particular species involved ?

We have now received more detailed information on the cases reported yesterday. These cases were brought to the attention of the DRC fisheries authorities last week but actually took place in March, April and May. Reports mention the presence of wounds on certain scaled finfish, manifested as ulcers and rendering the flesh « bitter ». The events took place on tributaries of the Congo river and certain adjoining lakes and streams along the transect Bukama- Manono- Akoro. Events date back to the months of March, April and May 2014 and affect Manono in the district of Tanganyika and Malemba Nkuku in the district of Haut Lomami in Katanga province ; the four sites of interest in Manono are : (i) Kankonde, Mpanda, Lanzi ; (ii) Kioni, Kasumba, Lukoje ; (iii) Masania, Kashimwa ; (iv) Kisesa, Kakamba, Sangwa. The OIE has received unofficial information regarding an outbreak of a fish disease in the DRC, which manifests itself by cutaneous wounds caused by ulcers. No further details at this stage.
