Je me demande ce que le rendement en riz a été ? Malheureusement, mon collègue Oumar Male et moi étions tous deux à Niono près de la zone du projet et n'étaient donc pas en mesure de rencontrer le Dr Liu. Je lui ai demandé de m'appeller quand il reviendra (probablement en Janvier). Nous avons également été contactés par Dr Nguge et Dr Coulibaly. Nous avons déjà rencontré avec Seydou Coulibaly au ministère de l'Elevage et de la Pêche Il serait intéressant à un certain moment de présenter vos résultats aux personnels et managers du projets. Les activités du projet ne sont qu'à leurs débuts. L' eau pour l'irrigation n'arrivera pas avant Juin prochain au plus tôt. Alors maintenant, cela serait le bon moment pour lancer quelques essais sur le terrain dans la région. Certains essais de production de riz en saison sèche vont bientôt commencer, peut-être des poissons pourraient être introduits? . Les meilleures informations que vous pouvez obtenir sur le travail concernant le riz-poisson que notre projet fait au Mali sera ce que vous recevez directement de Liu Liping et Dr Coulibaly. Dr Coulibaly est le directeur de la Direction Nationale de la Pêche, c'est notre collaborateur ditect au Mali, Liping dirige la composante "riz-poisson» du projet pour le CRSP. Nous allons bien entendu inclure des informations sur le travail riz-poissons dans les prochains rapports périodiques. Comme déjà mentionné par quelqu'un en bas, nous sommes dans les premières étapes de ce travail, qui sera clôturé avec les premières démonstrations des techniques riz-poisson en Baguineda. Je crois que les récoltes de poissons aura lieu aujourd'hui, puis il faudra un peu de temps pour collecter les données restantes (au moins un casier de riz n'a pas encore été récoltées) et résumer les résultats. Liping va travailler sur tout cela après les récoltes et d'un atelier qu'il dirige cette semaine. Dear Dr. Bowman:
Dr. Liu called last night and reported that they had harvested the fish yesterday and gotten a yield equivalent to more than 1 MT of fish per hectare. I wonder what the yield in rice was? Unfortunately, my colleague Oumar Male and I are both in Niono near the project area and so were not able to meet with Dr. Liu. I asked him to give me a call when he comes back (probably in January).
We have also been contacted by both Dr. Nguge and Dr. Coulibaly. We have already met with Seydou Coulibaly at the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries
It would be interesting at some point to present your results to project managers and staff. Project activities are just getting started. Water for irrigation won't arrive until next June at the earliest. So now would be a good time to start some field trials in the area. Some dry-seaon rice production trials are soon going to be starting; maybe fish could be introduced as well.

It is great to see this conversation get going, and I would like to be kept in the loop to the extent possible. The best information you can get on the rice-fish work that our project is doing in Mali will be what you receive directly from Liu Liping and Dr. Coulibaly. Dr. Coulibaly is the Director of the Direction Nationale de la Pêche, our direct collaborating organization in Mali. Liping leads the “Rice-Fish” component of the project for the CRSP. We will of course be including information on the rice-fish work in future periodic reports.
As already mentioned by someone below, we are in the early stages of this work, just now wrapping up the first demonstrations of the rice-fish technology in Baguineda. I believe that fish harvests will take place today, and then it will take a little time to collect the remaining relevant data (at least one rice field has not yet been harvested) and summarize the results. Liping will be working on all this after the harvests and a workshop that he is leading this week.
We will be happy to provide other information, for example about the AquaFish CRSP in general or about our project in Mali in particular, if that would be beneficial to you.

We've already had replies from Charles and from Dr. Liu who is currently here in Mali. We're now waiting for his telephone number so we can call him and meet him in person when next we're in Bamako.
We already have all the main contacts of all the top people at the Ministry of Fisheries who deal with aquaculture, as well as contacts here in the project area.
We've had no replies yet from the others, but will keep trying.
We've already turned the project livestock expert into a believer on aquaculture, which is a big step forward.

This is interesting coming at a time we are running Rice- Fish on-farm trials in Mali under AquaFish CRSP programme funded by USAID Mali. You may wish to contact Dr. James Bowman of Oregon State University, Dr. Liu Liping of Shanghai university as well as Dr. Hery Coulibaly the Director General of fisheries in Mali.
