Subject: [Econ] SGPE Affiliation 2023 window now open
Applications for 2023/24 PhD affiliation are now open. We encourage you to inform any of your PhD students for whom affiliation might be beneficial to discuss this with their supervisors, and to apply as soon as possible.

Dear Colleagues,
We will be welcoming Corrado Di Maria (UEA) to present on "The effect of climate policy on productivity and cost pass-through in the German manufacturing sector" (joint with Beat Hintermann, Leo Picard, Maja Zarkovic and Ulrich Wagner) A paper will be circulated closer to the date.
Bio
Corrado is a Professor in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics. His broad research interests span environmental and natural resource economics, energy economics, the economics of growth and development as well as technological change. The key feature of his work is an emphasis on both theoretical and empirical aspects, as well as its policy relevance.
Corrado’s most recent research covers several aspects of the interaction between environmental policy and natural resource use, the taxation of exhaustible resources, emissions trading schemes and their efficiency-promoting features, the role of skills in the process of economic growth, and environmental policy in the presence of directed technological change. Students interested in any (or all) of these themes are welcome to get in touch to discuss the possibility of supervision.
Prior to joining the University of East Anglia, Corrado worked at the University of Birmingham, Queen's University Belfast, and the University College Dublin. He obtained his PhD degree from Tilburg University in the Netherlands, having previously studied in Rome, Milan and Vienna.
Corrado’s CV can be found here<https://www.uea.ac.uk/documents/953219/4739267/corrado-di-maria-cv.pdf/ea4b…>.
Schedule can be edited here: https://stir-my.sharepoint.com/:x:/g/personal/hg10_stir_ac_uk/ETm88dL1rHBMm…
As ever, I strongly urge you guys to sign up for slots to chat to Corrado. This is obviously important for faculty, but goes doubly so for PhD students. This is a unique opportunity to talk about your reach with others and you can gain some real insights by talking to others. Please do not be shy.
Dinner
We will also need volunteers to come out for dinner with Corrado. This invitation is also extended to PhDs (dinner is paid for by the division).

Dear PhDs,
The Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics is organising a Summer School which will be run by Scott Cunningham, Ben H. Williams Professor of Economics, Baylor University on Sunday 28th - Tuesday 30th May 2023 at the University of Stirling.
The Summer School will provide an opportunity to PhD students, and also staff, in economics and other social sciences, to discuss the econometric methodologies associated with two popular research designs: the difference-in-differences design and the synthetic control design. It will bring the participant up to the cutting edge of how to handle complex situations like the inclusion of covariates and differential timing. As you might know this is perhaps one of the most popular methods in applied economics. Recent numbers suggest somewhere around 1/3 of papers in top journals use this for causal identification. Now, the literature has moved quite a lot in the last three years.
The deadline for applications is Friday 19th May 2023 and the link to apply can be found here: SGPE PhD Summer School 2023 Application Form<https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=sAafLmkWiUWHiRCgaTTcYeD…>
Further information, including course fees and accommodation, is available in this prospectus (pdf<https://www.ed.ac.uk/sites/default/files/atoms/files/sgpe_phd_summer_school…>).
The university pays for external training for PhD students and I think we could make the argument this is an important part of your training. I strongly encourage you to sign up. For any recent graduates you can still apply under the PhD fees.
Best,

Dear Econ PhD students,
We are back organising research seminars after a long paused due to Covid disruptions.
As I see it, this should be part of your economics training.
Among many things, seminars teach you how researchers go about structuring and communicating their papers and academic research.
Can I please ask you to join us on Friday at 2 pm in C3Y2 for Dr Bouwe Dijkstra's talk on Biodiversity Credits?
On top of this, do not fee shy about meeting our speakers and talk about your research. They are always eager to learn and listen to young PhD students and their ideas. Maybe a couple of you can meet Bouwe for a coffee?
Many thanks,
Mirko

Subject: [Econ] Reminder: Bouwe Dijkstra's Visit This Friday
Dear All,
This is a polite reminder we have a research seminar on Environmental Economics this Friday at 2PM in C3Y2. We will be welcoming Bouwe Dijkstra from Nottingham. Bouwe is Associate Professor whose research is in the areas of political economy and environmental economics, which has led to publications in the European Economic Review, European Journal of Political Economy, Public Choice and the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, among others. He is interested in the theory and application of emissions trading and the links between international trade and the environment. He has recently taken an interest in the economics of the informal sector.
His talk will be on Biodiversity Credits.
I urge you to fill out the visit schedule. At present only two members of staff have put down themselves for meetings. I would encourage all staff and PhD students to grab a chance to talk to Bouwe. You can book your slot here:
Bouwe Visit Schedule<https://stir-my.sharepoint.com/:x:/g/personal/hg10_stir_ac_uk/EZzacIFlhhtKg…>
We still need volunteers for dinner on Thursday.
best,
Hector

Hi all.
The University of Glasgow is hosting the RES PhD Conference 2023 (formerly RES Symposium of Junior Researchers) on June 9, 2023. It is usually an excellent conference and I highly encourage you to attend, and where possible submit to present.
This one-day conference is organised by PhD students at the Adam Smith Business School<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gla.a…>, University of Glasgow and supported by the Royal Economic Society<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fres.org.u…> (RES). The event is designed to provide PhD students and early career researchers with the opportunity to come together and connect with other researchers in a supportive environment to share ideas and receive valuable feedback.
We are also very pleased to be hosting Prof. Hervé Moulin, (University of Glasgow) as keynote speaker at the conference.
PhD students and Early Career Researchers are particularly encouraged to apply for the conference, but we also extend a warm welcome to more experienced researchers to attend the conference and provide feedback and mentorship. Applicants are invited to submit samples of works in all areas of Economics. All submissions will be reviewed by a scientific committee comprising PhDs in economics from different universities.
There is no participation or registration fee for the conference. Funding of up to £100 is available from the University of Glasgow and the Royal Economic Society.
The Call for Papers is now open, and interested applicants can apply here<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fres.org.u…>. The submission deadline is 3rd April 2023 11:59 PM (GMT).
Application guidelines and more information about the conference can be found on our website<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fres.org.u…>. For any further queries, do get in touch with our organising team Max.Schroder(a)glasgow.ac.uk or Yanyu.Zhou(a)glasgow.ac.uk.
best,
Hector

Hi Mirko,
I still have the details of Jason Atkins at Tennis Scotland regarding his request for a private economics tutor.
They have a 16 year old (turning 17 in March) tennis scholar who is taking higher economics this spring and needing an economics tutor for help.
Any interested tutor can tutor the student when they are on campus for tennis training. It is understood this would be a private arrangement and the parents of the student would be paying.
It may be of interest to PhD students for a bit of money. Any interested tutor should email Jason Atkins jason.atkins(a)tennisscotland.org, or can call them on 07957959216.
Are we able to share this amongst potentially interested tutors?
Kind regards,
Craig
