Dear colleagues and PhD students,
I would like to invite you to attend our Undergraduate Dissertation Work in Progress Symposium, which will take place on Thursday 26 February from 2:00–4:00pm in Cottrell 2A13. Please feel free to attend as much or as little as your schedule allows.
This is an important milestone for our undergraduate dissertation students. At this stage, they will have developed their research questions and should be beginning to generate early empirical results. The symposium provides them with a valuable opportunity to present their work and receive feedback from across the Economics community.
Your perspective and feedback at this stage can make a meaningful difference to the direction and quality of their final dissertations. Exposure to different viewpoints—methodological, theoretical, and applied—is particularly valuable as students refine their arguments and interpretation.
I would therefore strongly encourage as many staff and PhD students as possible to attend, even if only for part of the session. Your engagement plays an important role in supporting our students’ development as researchers and contributes to the intellectual life of the division.
Many thanks in advance for your support, and I hope to see many of you there.
Best wishes,
Hector

Folks,
I cannot stress this enough. But you should be falling over yourselves to meet people and get people to listen to your research. At the heart of the game is the truism that with enough eyes all bugs are shallow.
I am surprised to hear from Heriot Watt that no one in Stirling has taken up their PhD Seminar session.
Below is the information so you too can reach out to George to present.

Dear Rachel,
Just following up on our PhD seminar series we are calling ‘Early Career Economics Seminar Series’ (ECESS) here at Heriot-Watt.
When we spoke at Crieff you mentioned you had circulated with your PhD students, I guess I am snitching on them, but so far we only have sign ups from Strathclyde!
The website https://hw-econ.github.io/ contains the current schedule, a call for papers, and a sign up link to be added to our mailing list for future (hybrid) sessions. If people want to sign up they can email me directly at gjm2004(a)hw.ac.uk<mailto:gjm2004@hw.ac.uk>. We welcome research in any fields of economics by a current PhD or early career researcher.
Please can you share again and do let them know it’s a relaxed environment focused on getting excited about new work.
If you have any suggestions for how else to spread the message I would welcome them.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Kind regards,
George

Subject: Heriot-Watt Early Career Economics Seminar Series (ECESS)
Dear all,
Please see below. It would be greatly appreciated if you could circulate with relevant networks!
Call for Papers: Early Career Economics Seminar Series (ECESS)
In January 2026, we (Heriot-Watt PhD students) will launch a new biweekly seminar series.
The goal of this series is to create a low-stakes and accessible space for researchers to present their work, network with peers, and reconnect with alumni.
We want this to be a space where you can test ideas and get in a first run-through in public as well as encouraging more socialising, to this end we are imposing two policies:
1. Clarifications only: We will only permit interruptions to clear up details, otherwise allowing space for presenters to tell their story before discussion
2. Sociability: We will aim for Monday afternoons, with the specific intention of heading to Geordies for a drink and a chat immediately afterwards
We specifically encourage applications from
* Current PhD students (at any stage)
* Recent alumni and Industry Post-PhDs
* Early Career Researchers
* Visiting peers from other universities (especially fellow SGPE institutions)
We are accepting submissions for two distinct formats:
1. Short Form
* Time: 15–20 minutes (plus longer discussion/Q&A)
* Purpose: Early-stage ideas, research proposals, or getting feedback on a specific puzzle you are trying to solve
2. Long Form
* Time: 45–60 minutes (plus 15 mins Q&A)
* Purpose: Ideal for polishing a completed paper, practicing a job talk, or presenting a full chapter
How to Apply
We are currently filling slots for the coming second semester (starting Jan 5th).
If you are interested in presenting, please reply to gjm2004(a)hw.ac.uk<mailto:gjm2004@hw.ac.uk> with:
1. Your preferred format (Short or Long)
2. A rough title or topic (abstract even better)
3. Your preferred dates (Mondays) in January/February/March
Best regards,
Heriot-Watt ECESS Organisers

Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to share the schedule for this year’s Annual Review presentations in the Economics Division:
*
Thursday 18th September (in the Divisional Seminar Slot)
*
Jayne Brown
*
Gabe Han
*
Kevin Kim
*
Thursday 2nd October (in the Divisional Seminar Slot)
*
Liz Barker
*
Omobola Olagbenro
All staff and PhD students are warmly invited to attend. These sessions are an important opportunity to hear about the ongoing research of our PhD students, provide constructive feedback, and support their progress.
A couple of reminders and requests:
*
Supervisors: if you have not yet done so, please get in touch with me to confirm the reviewer for your student.
*
Chairs: I will need additional support. In particular, I cannot chair Kevin Kim’s or Gabe Han’s reviews on 18th September due to conflicts of interest, and on 2nd October I will need someone else to chair one of Liz Barker’s or Omobola Olagbenro’s reviews. Please let me know if you are available to help.
Best regards,
Hector

Thank you,

________
Hi everyone,
The thesis writing workshop led by Rowena Murray has been booked for Friday the 13th of June from 10 to 4 pm (following the PhD conference). Rowena is an expert on doctoral research writing, writing for publications and viva preparation, so her insights will be very helpful for your thesis writing.
This is a practical workshop, involving various writing activities and discussions that can be useful at different stages in writing a thesis. Topics we will cover in this course include writing to prompts for drafts and chapters, criteria for assessing a thesis, analysing academic writing, strategies for generating text, outlining, revising, social writing, making time to write, constructing a ‘contribution’ argument for your thesis, writing a 750-word thesis summary and building a repertoire or ‘tool kit’ of productive strategies for thesis writing and for other ways of writing about research for other audiences and purposes.
This course involves short writing activities, all designed to help you develop your thesis and to get into the writing habit. By signing up to this course you agree to do the writing tasks and to talk about your writing in small-group discussions, to give and receive feedback on writing and to discuss your writing plans and goals.
Key reference:
Murray, R. (2025) How to Write a Thesis, 5th edition. Maidenhead: Open University Press-McGraw-Hill
We will circulate a Teams invite shortly, please make sure that you indicate your availability (accept/reject) so we know about numbers for Rowena to organise the day.
Best wishes,
Ines B.

Dear Team,
I am excited to share that we've made some updates to our website, including the addition of a news item and an up-to-date events calendar. If you have any news or upcoming events that are not currently listed, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me (or Carl) — we would love to include your contributions!
Additionally, if applicable, could you consider including the Economics website link in your email signatures? This will help direct visitors to the most current information, as the University link is temporarily outdated and requires some IT adjustments.
You can find the link here: www.econ.stir.ac.uk.
Please feel free to send any suggestions for further website improvements my way. We truly value your input!
Don’t forget to check out our latest news item! We are also actively sharing our updates on social media to enhance our outreach - we still need to decide one for the Division.
Thank you for your collaboration!
Best regards,
Seda
