Dear BERGers,
I am excited to let you know that Spring semester BERG meetings will begin next week, Wednesday 20th January, at 5:30pm in the Psychology Common Room (Room 3A94). At our first meeting we will hold an informal introduction and discuss any BERG news (new publications, grants, upcoming conferences, etc.).
I will circulate our program for the semester shortly but there are still a few more slots available. BERG meetings are a great opportunity to practice conference presentations, to receive feedback on data/methods/grant applications, or to lead discussions on interesting or controversial topics/articles. We still have slots available on the following dates:
27th January
17th February
23rd March
If you would like to use one of these slots, please go to the following poll and choose a date (only one please): http://doodle.com/poll/837n6q6cxcid98zh?
If there is anyone who you would like to invite please let me know, however, we can only cover basic travel expenses so local speakers only.
These meetings are generously sponsored by the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW), and if you are not already a member please consider joining (http://www.ufaw.org.uk/ ). It is still only £10 for students (£30 others). By joining UFAW you can help make real, practical and lasting advances to animal welfare throughout the world - for companion animals, farm animals, animals used in research, captive wild animals and those living in the wild that are affected by human activities. Please do join to thank them for their continued support of us in BERG and to enhance animal welfare.
Looking forward to seeing you all next week.
All the best,
Eoin

Dear BERGers,
Three of the Top 10 papers listed in this article:
http://blogs.stir.ac.uk/isnews/?p=5272
focus on primates (great apes; although one of the papers was published in
2003!).
Nice bit of trivia to end the year on.
Happy holidays,
Liz
Dear all
Thanks to Ally for a superb talk at BERG tonight - ended our 2015 seminar series on a really high note about the benefits of partners for positive outcomes.
And a big thank you to Hayley who has ensured the BERG research group meetings have run smoothly all semester, and to all our speakers who have made them so engaging and interesting. Eoin will soon be looking for volunteers for next year, so please offer.
I wish you all happy festivities and a relaxing break.
My best, Hannah
Please see below a petition calling for the end of the UK primate pet trade, and consider whether you can sign it (signing it only takes 30 seconds).

Dear All,
There are thousands of primates caught up in the UK primate pet trade. Next year the Government will be reviewing the Code of Practice for the Welfare of Privately-Kept Non-Human Primates. Wild Futures has joined forces with six other organisations concerned for animal welfare, including the British Veterinary Association, calling for an end to this sad trade. For details and to add your name to our petition, please visit: http://www.wildfutures.org/petition/
Thank you.

Subject: Call For Papers
Hello
We are currently looking for abstracts for presentations or posters for the 6th Regional Environmental Enrichment Conference (REEC).
It will be held from the 22nd to the 25th of May 2016 at Fota Wildlife Park in Ireland. We are looking for a range of subjects across all taxa. The conference is a good platform to share enrichment ideas and develop new skills. It is also an opportunity to present your ideas whether they have been successful or may need more work. It’s all in the name of improving welfare for captive species.
The REEC is a conference that takes place once every 2 years and is aimed at animal professionals who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in the area of environmental enrichment. The REEC UK and Ireland is operated in conjunction with the Shape of Enrichment Inc. and encourages the development of enrichment programs offers guidance and promoted networking within the region.
If you are interested please return the form attached below to reec2016(a)yahoo.com<mailto:reec2016@yahoo.com> and also please pass on this information to anyone you think will be interested.
Best Wishes

Dear all,
I'm passing on a request from our former colleague Jim Anderson (see below), who is looking for any pictures of primates with dead conspecifics. If you have anything suitable, please send them on to Jim asap! (best address to get hold of him is: jra6655(a)googlemail.com).
Many thanks,
Christine.
An unlikely request: I wonder if anybody in BERG has a picture of a monkey or ape responding to a dead conspecific (infant or mature)... I'm correcting the proofs of an invited Q&A article for Current Biology on "death and dying," and at the last minute the ultimate owners of the two pictures I was going to use (a Japanese female macaque and her dead infant) have withdrawn permission to publish them! This means I have to replace them - urgently - with something else that is relevant.
Any chance you could circulate this to BERG staff just in case somebody has something usable? Full acknowledgement to be given, of course... but it is quite urgent.
Thanks!
Best regards,
Jim
