Dear all,
In the next BERG/SHAIR meeting Jade Hooper will give a presentation titled "Exploring social inequalities in dog bites and strikes across Scotland"
We will meet in the Psychology Common Room at 4pm. You can find the abstract below
Hospital admissions due to dog bites and strikes (DBS) are rising across the UK and in Scotland this has been dubbed a ‘national crisis’. DBS can result in serious physical and mental harm, particularly to vulnerable populations. While the highest rates are seen in the most deprived areas of England and Wales, the extent of these disparities in Scotland is unclear. In this talk, I will present findings from a study exploring social inequalities in DBS across Scotland. The research analysed data from NHS 24 calls, A&E attendances, and hospital admissions linked to 2011 Census data, focusing on area-level deprivation, household characteristics, and environmental factors. The talk will discuss the need to address inequities and advocate for a shift from the criminalisation and blaming of irresponsible dog ownership toward strategies that support families and consider the role of broader systemic factors.

Dear all,
This is an announcement that this Wednesday Roman Stengeling from the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Antrhopology in Leipzig, Germany will give a presentation on: Culture and Human Development: Issues of Global Representation and Contextualization. The talk will be online at 4pm and we will also gather in the Psychology Common Room.
Since its inception, child development research has predominantly sampled participants from a narrow and unrepresentative range of cultural communities. Despite this, findings are typically generalized to represent "children" universally. This talk presents a systematic review of studies from five major journals (2016-2020), highlighting the persistent overrepresentation of children from culturally atypical populations, often in the absence of contextual detail. To illustrate the impact of this biased sampling and lack of contextualization, I will discuss recent cross-cultural research conducted in rural Namibia and urban Germany, examining cultural variation in socio-cognitive development—specifically, children’s cooperation in social dilemmas and their understanding of false beliefs. These findings advocate for culturally-inclusive approaches to finally advance a genuinely global, rather than regional, science of child development.
best,
Alex

Hello Bergers,
In case someone is interested, on Saturday October 19 I will run a discussion on "Rational Animals?" for the Stirling Science Festival<https://stirlingevents.org/tolbooth-event/science-festival-saturday-19-octo…>. The event will be at the Tolbooth from 2:30 to 3:30 pm.
Just so you know what to expect, it will not be a lecture. Rather, I will make a 10-minute introduction to the topic, raise some question, invite suggestions from the audience, and I'll moderate the discussion. It will all be very informal and interactive.
All the best,
Giacomo
