Post-doctoral Position in Comparative Social Cognition: The Cognitive Foundations of Social Minds https://careers.umich.edu/job_detail/199180/research_fellow<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcareers.u…> A postdoctoral position in comparative social cognition shared between the Department of Behavioral Sciences-Psychology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and the Department of Psychology University of Michigan-Ann Arbor is available beginning as early as September 2021. Candidates with a Ph.D. in primate behavior and cognition/comparative cognition, cognitive psychology, or related fields are encouraged to apply. The position is funded for up to three years by the Templeton World Charity Foundation - Diverse Intelligences division. The position involves comparative data collection and analysis through testing bonobos, chimpanzees and humans (children and adults) using virtual reality (non-invasive testing only). This social cognitive project has four main objectives. First, it will rigorously evaluate the theoretical foundations of intentional cooperation by nonhuman animals (apes) compared to humans as distinct from behaviors (ie., competitive) that may appear to be cooperative. The cross-species comparison also aims to identify whether nonhuman apes exhibit pre-cursors to, or the full repertoire of, intentional cooperation. Second, the project will include developing formal theoretical models in the form of computational agent models of the learning and behavioral strategies exhibited by the nonhuman apes and humans. Third, the introduction of ape avatars will allow exploration of questions about ‘self’ in virtual reality, and to further our understanding of Theory of Mind in nonhuman primates. The fourth aim is to advance the science and methods of testing nonhuman primate cognition using virtual reality. The postdoctoral position will benefit from interaction with other research team members and world-class faculty at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor and Dearborn campuses), and research team members at the University of St. Andrews’ Psychology Department and the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Pet Bereavement study - participants required!

I'm looking for adult UK residents who've experienced the death of their companion animal in the last couple of years. If you fulfil that criteria yourself, please click on the link below and complete the questionnaire. If you know one or more people who could participate, please forward this email with the text below. If you just want to look through the survey, that's fine, just email me your participant id (shown on every page) and I can delete your data. Many thanks in advance ! kind regards Annabel I am studying for an MA in Human-Animal Interaction with the Psychology department of Stirling University and I would like to invite you to participate in my dissertation research project on Companion Animal Bereavement. I am particularly looking for an even spread of male and female participants and across all small companion animals: rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, reptiles as well as cats and dogs. For this research I will not include larger animals such as horses and pigs, or fish. I have designed the questionnaire to be as concise as possible, concentrating on the level of attachment people feel for their pets, the grief they experience after the death and the support they receive from their friends, family and others around that time. As well as the usual multiple- choice questions with scaled answers for quantitative analysis, I have included two long-answer questions to which I will apply a qualitative analysis. It should take less than 20 minutes to complete. The survey has been approved by the General University Ethics Panel and the Animal Welfare Ethical Review Body and is to be completed by UK adults over the age of 18(Or Stirling students 16+) who have had a pet die within the last two years, to cover the period before, during and after the pandemic. I would like to complete data collection by the end of June so I would appreciate it if you could participate within the next couple of weeks. Missing BERG meetings? Fancy a walk around the campus loch instead?

Dear BERGers I'm missing the BERG meetings! I would like to propose (weather permitting) that we meet on campus on Wednesday 16th June at 5pm for a socially responsible and socially distanced walk and chat with whomever else turns up! I suggest we meet in the top Cottrell car park at 5pm (and if needed I'll make a plan to avoid any large groups by splitting us into smaller groups of anti- & clockwise walkers - with the potential to swap groups to chat with more folk).
