A cousin of North America’s grizzly, it is a unique subspecies that became geographically isolated from other brown bears in Europe. With a population of about 60 remaining, the Marsican brown bear is at extremely high risk of extinction. That’s why we’re supporting Salviamo l’Orso. A local NGO, they’ve been working in ‘corridor’ areas to expand the bear population beyond the Abruzzo National Park to neighbouring protected areas. Editor in Chief positions (x2) Dear Colleagues, I hope you are doing well! As the newly elected President of the Linnean Society of London, I am writing to alert you to two ongoing searches for the Editor in Chief role for two of the Linnean Society journals – specifically the Botanical Journal and the Zoological Journal, and to ask for your assistance in spreading the word among your communities and networks. The Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society publishes original papers on systematic and evolutionary zoology and comparative studies of both living and fossil animals, while the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society publishes original papers on systematic and evolutionary botany and comparative studies of both living and fossil plants. Both of these Editor-in-Chief positions will receive an honorarium of £15,000 per year (plus up to £1,000 in travel expenses for the purpose of attending conferences to publicise the journal) and will be appointed for a fixed three-year period, with a start date of 1 April 2023. It will also be expected that the successful applicant will make themselves available to shadow the existing Editors-in-Chief from October/November 2022 to the end of March 2023 to enable a smooth transition. The Editors-in-Chief will be supported by a Journal Editorial Manager who will manage all the journal’s online systems, processes and relationships to ensure that the journal is published in a timely manner and adheres to the highest editorial standards. They are further supported by a Journal Officer who is responsible for supporting the Journal Editorial Manager in the delivery and production of the required administrative support to the Editors-in-Chief of the Linnean Society Journals. The decision to create this in-house administrative team to support the Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board was made by the Linnean Society’s Council earlier this year, in order to reduce the administrative workload on the Editor-in-Chief and allow them to spend more time on setting out a future direction for the journal and (with the assistance of the Linnean Society and our publishers OUP) raising the profile of the journal amongst authors and sourcing interesting papers. For the Editors-in-Chief roles, we are especially interested in finding a creative individual who will work with us to facilitate the future development of the journals, and who possesses the appropriate networks and communication skills to ensure that the journal thrives at the international level. UK residency is not required for these roles, and we welcome applications from early career scientists with relevant editorial experience. Mindful of EDI (equality, diversity and inclusion) principles, the new Editors-in-Chief will continue to ensure a diversity of authors and editorial board members and will be committed to widening access to research to a broader community of all those interested in protecting nature. Movie Animals Protected (MAP) position

In case of interest to someone.... Movie Animals Protected (MAP) is looking for part-time on-call representatives to oversee the humane treatment and safety of animals in film & television. We are looking for part-time on-call representatives in the London area (England), Budapest, France, Prague, Istanbul, and other European locations. Additional information from Ken Gold, a colleague who asked me to advertise: These are most certainly paid positions, but part-time. We will be advertising until the positions are filled. Ideally we are looking for local people near where the filming occurs, but some travel expenses will be covered dependent upon the specific jobs. Details of how to apply in attached document. Hannah's view: Aside from educational documentaries, I personally do not approve of (most of) the use of animals in film and television, given the potential for widespread negative consequences, and potential for animal alternatives (CGI etc). Dear all, I hope you’re well. I am just emailing to let you know that we will start our series of BERG meetings on the 14th of September, at 4pm. Please, find attached the schedule for the fall and link for the online meetings. I have indicated which talks will be online and which ones F2F, however I have managed to book the Common room for Wednesdays 4pm-5pm starting on the 14th of September until mid-December. This opens up the possibility of meeting in that room (for those who are in Stirling and prefer to listen to the talks in the company of others rather than from the office or home) even if the talks are online.
