Three online talks, potentially of interest to some: (Wednesdays, 17.30 GMT, i.e. after BERG)
Dr. Rebecca Meagher January 26th, 12:30 EST - Exploring the connections between cognition and welfare in farmed animals
Dr. Joao Costa February 9, 12:30pm EST Dairy cattle behavior in modern production systems

Dear all,
…
[View More]CSSAW Alumna Dr. Rebecca Meagher will be kicking off the CCSAW Research Seminar series this semester in a couple of weeks time (Wed Jan. 26that 1230):
Zoom -- MailScanner has detected a possible fraud attempt from "ryyzw.smtpurl.com" claiming to be https://zoom.us/j/99356192808<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fryyzw.smtp…>
Dr. Meagher will present on links between cognition and welfare in farmed animals, especially dairy cattle. Amongst other topics, she will review how calf housing affects their abilities to learn, and how motivated adult cows are to learn.
Dr. Meagher is currently an Assistant Professor of Animal Welfare at Dalhousie University, focusing mainly on mink and dairy cattle. Her research interests include welfare assessment methods, effects of the early environment, and understanding and managing individual differences. Her work on the environments of calves and heifers examines how these factors affect both cognition and emotional states such as boredom.
Sadly she won't be here in person - her "visit" will be 100% online. But the poster is attached - please spread the word so we get a great turnout!
I’ve also attached a poster with all this semester’s seminars, February's and March's too.
Look forward to “seeing” you there!

Dear all,
It is my great pleasure to let you know that our Cognition Journal Club will be hosting Prof. Charlotte K. Hemelrijk next Monday at 1pm via Teams.
Charlotte is full professor of the self-organisation of social systems at the University Groningen in the Netherlands. Her main topics of study, at present, are the collective escape in bird flocks and dominance relations between the sexes in all kinds of animals. For studying the dynamics of intersexual dominance, she develops bottom-up computational models and tests them in real animals, with a focus on primates and rodents.
In the upcoming CJC, Charlotte will be talking about the dynamics of dominance between the sexes in primates, which nicely aligns and greatly extends our last CJC. Please find below an abstract of what she will be talking about:
In social systems of animals their dominance of females relative to males matter to females, for instance, when defending themselves against sexual harassment and when competing for food. Females in group-living primates are usually smaller than males. Yet despite their smaller body size, females are often seen to dominate a few males. In the present study, we show that female dominance over males increases due to the self-reinforcing effects of winning and losing fights under certain conditions. First, in computational models, we show this happens when the aggression of both sexes is fiercer, aggression by males is more intense than by females, the fraction of males in the group is higher, and females need more food than males. Second, we confirm these model-based hypotheses in empirical data of macaques, vervet monkeys, capuchin monkeys, lemurs and humans.
Please feel free to forward this mail and come along.

Dear all,
I hope you are all well and thank you to those that forwarded on the information about the Internships at Lakeview!
I thought your students may also be interested in a paid opportunity that could fit around their studies, if they are looking for practical experience working with animals and an invaluable opportunity to network with animal care staff. We are looking to increase our team of Assistant Instructors, either to help us run our team building events and/or to help us with our latest venture building new animal enclosures from scratch.
For Team Builds we are looking for someone who is personable and happy to work in a public facing role. The ability to travel is a must, as we work from Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland, down to Port Lympne in the South East of England and across to Dartmoor Zoo in the South West
For the enclosure builds we are looking for people with practical skills who are happy to work full days on site over multiple days or weeks. Having now completed multiple enclosure furnishing projects, in addition to 2 complete enclosures that we have designed and built from scratch, we are currently reviewing multiple enquires, with at least 3 more possible builds lined up for 2022.
A group interview day will be held on the 13th Dec at Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary in Ascot, with practical and theoretical components to give us a chance to see how potential applicants might fit into our existing team.
More details can be found on the attached PDF.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Mark
