BERG-SHAIR 21st May

Dear all, In our next BERG/SHAIR meeting this Wednesday 21st May, Dr. Alvaro López Caicoya (Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology, Dummerstorf) will present his work "Beyond the Usual Suspects: Cognitive Insights from Ungulates". Alvaro will join us online. We will broadcast the talk from the Psychology Common Room at 4pm as usual. Abstract Recent research at the Barcelona and Leipzig zoos has explored cognitive processes in ungulates, a group traditionally underrepresented in comparative cognition. Using a range of experimental paradigms, studies have examined species such as giraffes, bisons, zebras, and others, focusing on object permanence, memory, quantity discrimination, problem-solving abilities, and social cognition. Dear everyone, Apologies for the late reminder this week. In the next BERG/SHAIR meeting (tomorrow 4pm). Dr. Sandro Sehner will present "Getting Along to get Ahead. Social tolerance and Problem-Solving in Primate Groups" Dr. Sandro Sehner is a postdoctoral researcher at the German Primate Center in Göttingen and the Centre de Primatologie in Strasbourg. Abstract: In my talk, I will explore how social tolerance shapes both social learning and innovation—two key building blocks of cultural evolution. Drawing on research with lemurs, capuchin monkeys, and common marmosets, I examine how variation in group-level tolerance affects primates’ ability to acquire and solve novel tasks together.
