There was an interesting discussion today on Radio 4 (Lawrie Taylor) between
Greg Philo and George Walden about the ignorance of people about current
affairs. Greg made some interesting and valid points about the failure of
the media and school system to enable the development of useful and relevant
knowledge about current affairs. However he was accused of subscribing to
conspiracy theories (ie the establishment doctoring the media) and failed to
counter these. Interestingly there was no mention of Chomsky's propaganda
model, or of the internalised values that lead to selective reporting, and
the discussion in general seemed to focus on a fairly simplistic notion that
either the media is fixed/censored or not (depending on what side of the
political fence you are on!!).
