Karen,
Congratulations on a good job -- the other editions awaited with baited breath...
I think it would be interesting to see how the various catfish manuals compare and how we could have a web-based word doc as opposed to pdf that could be fine-tuned and adjusted to meet local needs and languages? There are good examples of catfish documents going back to FAOs work in Congo and up through the Nigerian project and more recently.....
Similarly, while downloading the manual I was reminded of the suppliers guide and how this could serve as a regional template for ANAF.....

The FISH project staff has assembled the training handouts from the project into manuals for clarias catfish production, tilapia production and cage farming. So far, only the catfish manual has been completed, after several editing sessions that took more than a year. Hopefully the tilapia manual will be out soon, followed by the cage farming manual. Personally, I prefer short handouts but others like to see everything set out in a longer version, so here it is. The information presented in the manual is based upon data obtained from real fish farms growing real fish. The manual is long, because it repeats several key ideas and goes into extensive detail on the commercial aspects of being a fish farmer. Note that the marketing chapter comes at the beginning of the manual because markets determine farm design and we have been trying to get farmers to identify their markets and understand them BEFORE they begin growing fish.
The manual can be obtained from the following website: http://www.ag.auburn.edu/fish/international/uganda/ You can download by chapter or you can download the entire manual. In Uganda, you can obtain a CD with the catfish manual the Services and Suppliers Guide, the USAID FISH project final report and the latest fish farmers symposium presentations from the WAFICOS offices. There are some hard copies available and the fish farmers group is seeking to print more. After showing this manual around Africa, it appears that it can be useful in several countries. The financial data are given in Uganda shillings, which at the time was 2,000 USh/$. It is a bit different now. Even though markets are dynamic and change, as do management options, the manual seeks to show farmers how to make informed decisions. Those who wish to become competant advisors to fish farmers would do well to read the manual several times. Special thanks to Maurice Ssebisubi who helped on putting together the various manuals and the fish farmers symposium website for WAFICOS. Best regards to all, karen
