The bitumen used is the same used for drinking water tanks. It is not as
bad as the copper treatments used to prevent fouling. However, it needs
to be re-applied after 1 year to prolong the life of the net. It can be
avoided but in my experience is a very good investment and much less
environmentally problematic than the feed inputs.
