Subject: Heriot-Watt Early Career Economics Seminar Series (ECESS)
Dear all,
Please see below. It would be greatly appreciated if you could circulate with relevant networks!
Call for Papers: Early Career Economics Seminar Series (ECESS)
In January 2026, we (Heriot-Watt PhD students) will launch a new biweekly seminar series.
The goal of this series is to create a low-stakes and accessible space for researchers to present their work, network with peers, and reconnect with alumni.
We want this to be a space where you can test ideas and get in a first run-through in public as well as encouraging more socialising, to this end we are imposing two policies:
1. Clarifications only: We will only permit interruptions to clear up details, otherwise allowing space for presenters to tell their story before discussion
2. Sociability: We will aim for Monday afternoons, with the specific intention of heading to Geordies for a drink and a chat immediately afterwards
We specifically encourage applications from
* Current PhD students (at any stage)
* Recent alumni and Industry Post-PhDs
* Early Career Researchers
* Visiting peers from other universities (especially fellow SGPE institutions)
We are accepting submissions for two distinct formats:
1. Short Form
* Time: 15–20 minutes (plus longer discussion/Q&A)
* Purpose: Early-stage ideas, research proposals, or getting feedback on a specific puzzle you are trying to solve
2. Long Form
* Time: 45–60 minutes (plus 15 mins Q&A)
* Purpose: Ideal for polishing a completed paper, practicing a job talk, or presenting a full chapter
How to Apply
We are currently filling slots for the coming second semester (starting Jan 5th).
If you are interested in presenting, please reply to gjm2004(a)hw.ac.uk<mailto:gjm2004@hw.ac.uk> with:
1. Your preferred format (Short or Long)
2. A rough title or topic (abstract even better)
3. Your preferred dates (Mondays) in January/February/March
Best regards,
Heriot-Watt ECESS Organisers
