Welcome Back from Professor Iain Docherty, Dean, Institute for Advanced Studies
I'd like to welcome you all to the 2024-25 Academic Year. Our Postgraduate Research
student community continues to grow and diversify in terms of the opportunities we offer
and the skills and experiences that you bring to enrich and enliven University life. This
year, we are delighted to welcome the second cohort of our Institute for Advanced Studies
studentship holders. We are also joined by new students across our participating Doctoral
Training Partnerships, including from the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science,
which formally begins its new ten year programme this month. More students will join us as
the year progresses across all of our programmes. For those of you who are returning,
please accept my congratulations on your progress so far, and continue to enjoy the
journey towards successful completion of your degree.
To my colleagues without whom our PGR programme would not be the success it is, thank you
again for your support and commitment. Over the last year, the quality of your supervision
was highlighted in both student surveys and the outcome of the University’s latest quality
review, which commended us for sector best practice. More widely, the University’s recent
success in major grant competitions means that we will have additional research teams,
involving both PGRs and research staff, developing over the year ahead.
Researcher Development Programme 2024-25
The Researcher Development Programme has a diverse range of internally led sessions on
this semester focussing on impact, writing and publishing and ethics in research practice

Stirling Crucible applications opening soon
Applications for the next Stirling Crucible will be opening soon.
The Stirling Crucible is a biannual development opportunity for early career research
staff (ECRs) to stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration, facilitate building active
networks of researchers across the University and beyond, and grow individual researchers’
creativity, innovation and confidence in working with others to generate research with
real world impact.
What have past participants had to say?
‘This was a really great experience and one of the best things I have done across my year
as an early career researcher’
‘I would recommend participating in this programme even if you do feel confident in your
abilities and capacities as an academic. It acts as a reminder and gives structure to some
of the idea you may already have and getting feedback in your ideas is the best part of
the Crucible. I highly recommend this!’
Look out for applications opening via Staff Roundup, Faculty newsletters and announcements
on the IAS Research Staff Canvas module

Standing Up for Science
Sense about Science will be running a FREE, practical, and interactive Standing up for
Science workshop for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) on
Friday<https://uoscomms.newsweaver.com/universityofstirling.1m18wtvjlw/t…

skills of ECRs to engage in the public discourse around science, research, and the
research process.
Hear from researchers further along in their careers about their experiences, good and
bad, of working with the media and policy worlds, from experienced media and policy
professionals about how their worlds work and what they need from scientists to operate
effectively and receive tools and insights on how best to communicate some of the most
complex issues of science and evidence.
