Hi Till,

Behsci Journal club- I have created a new sheet in the PhD lab agenda document so we can suggest papers to read for a journal club. Maybe if we get a short list of 3-4 papers we can have a quick poll to vote for which one we’d like to read. Or we can select another way? Leo is always mentioning interesting papers!

I am interested in the session on the 17th but I also have Simon’s experimental datasets class then so I am not sure which is best to prioritise?

Subject: [Phd-behsci] PhD Lab slot next week + Referee report session

Dear PhD Lab,

(1) Just a quick reminder that next week’s Lab slot is still unclaimed. Does anyone have anything related to their research they’d like Lab feedback on? If so, please feel free to add your name.

(2) The Econ PhD Lab is doing a Referee Report Session, similar to what we discussed we might do. That’s great, as we won’t have to to cram this into our tight Spring schedule.

  • It’s one of Carl’s research papers that got rejected (with referee reports), then revised, resubmitted to another journal and is currently under review
  • The topic of the paper is Econ, but the topic itself isn’t bone-dry: It’s about the Gender Pay Gap (details below)
  • The paper got circulated this week and will be discussed in the Econ PhD Lab on Monday 17th of February at 13:00-14:00
    • I realise that this may be a difficult time for some of you
    • This is very much a group exercise in the sunup to the lab, so even if you can’t make the lab session itself, I think it will be useful
  • If you are interested in participating in this exercise please let me know and I’ll talk to Carl and Hector to add you to it.

(3) For their second activity in March, the Econ lab will pick out some recent papers in top Econ journals for students to attempt to replicate, using published replication packages, and then the students will briefly each present a quick reflective summary of what they learned from the replication exercise they tried

  • Perhaps also of interest to some of you

Best,

Till

Review Carl's Paper --- Spring 2025

Hi All, The paper to review is this one:

Rejected at Oxford Economic Papers in December: Unequal Hiring Wages and Their Impact on the Gender Pay Gap | IZA - Institute of Labor Economics

Slightly revised version of the paper is here, after the rejection, that we have submitted to another journal, where it is now under review. hiring_gender_wage_gap_2024.pdf

Collectively review the paper, latest version. And prepare a 20-30 mins presentation for the next Lab. I will then try my best to discuss and reply to your review on the spot. After the Lab, I will then share with you the actual reviews I received on the paper in December.

Best,

 Carl
