Lectureship positions at the University of Plymouth

Hello everyone, In the School of Psychology here at the University of Plymouth we currently have three lectureship positions advertised. Two of these posts are for any area of Psychology with one available as a permanent appointment and the other as a fixed-term 3 year position. We also have a lectureship advertised in behavioural or cognitive neuroscience. This latter post is for a fixed term of 4 years. In addition to behavioural research facilities including a dedicated child development lab (BabyLab) we also have a new Brain Imaging Research Centre (https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/research/psychology/brain-research-and-imaging-c…) which is due to open next year with MRI, EEG and TMS facilities available. The lecturer in behavioural or cognitive neuroscience in particular is anticipated to be heavily involved in developing research at this new facility although the facilities will be available to all. Postdoc Position in Face Processing and Social Cognition

Applications are invited from highly motivated researchers for a postdoctoral position immediately available in the Computational & Cognitive Neuroscience Lab, led by Prof. Angela Yu, at University of California, San Diego. One current project of particular interest is using machine learning, computer vision, and statistical techniques to model human face processing and representation, as well as face-based social cognition. More broadly, Dr. Yu’s lab applies modern machine learning and statistical tools to extract computational principles that underlie cognitive processes that enable intelligent behavior, in particular how humans and other intelligent agents perform inference, learning, decision-making, and social interactions under conditions of uncertainty and non-stationarity. Current interests include face processing, attention, active sensing, judgement and decision making, and social cognition. Applicants should be committed to applying rigorous computational and mathematical tools to understand natural intelligence. Experience or interest in carrying out human behavioral experiments (either in person or on-line) and/or collaborating with neuroimaging/neurophysiology laboratories is desirable. Initial appointment is for one year, renewable for up to 2-3 years. Dr. Yu's lab is situated within the Cognitive Science department, and also affiliated with the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute, the Computer Science Department, the Neurosciences Graduate Program, and the Institute of Neural Computation. There are ample opportunities for collaborations with related groups across the UCSD main campus, the medical school, and the Salk Institute. looking for sub-Saharan African and Western European face databases

Dear fellow face researchers, For a project on cross-cultural differences in eyewitness testimony and identification, my PhD student Gabi de Bruïne and I are looking for databases of young adult male faces (real, not generated) from amongst which to select fillers for photo lineups for a black Gambian target and a white Dutch target. Ideally, we would like to select Gambian fillers and Dutch fillers, respectively, but I can imagine that would be hard to find. An alternative option would be to select a range of sub-Saharan African fillers and a range of Western European fillers, respectively. Does any of you perhaps know of any databases we could use? We have already looked at the face databases collected in this Google document <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1K-Gelc-HBgbwsDKWraCubGVf30uOrnTo3FT…>, and found some Western European faces (some Dutch, Scottish, Danish) and some sub-Saharan African faces (South African), but not enough of a range to make the lineup work, particularly for the African target. Any help or advice would be much appreciated! databases needed: including residence information of the depicted persons

Dear all, for a research project, I am looking for databases that include at least one measure of facial appearance (i.e., face photographs or rating data) and at least one measure for the current or previous residence of the person depicted (i.e., city name, city size, GPS data, zip code, level of urbanization, or greenness of neighbourhood). This workshop, organized as part of WACV 2021, will gather researchers dealing with the problem of modelling human behaviour under its multiple facets (expression of emotions, display of relational attitudes, the performance of an individual or joint actions, etc.), with particular attention to multi-source aspects, including multi-sensor, multi-participant and multi-modal settings. Example challenges are the additional resource and robustness constraints, explorations in information fusion, social and contextual aspects of interactions, and building multi-source representations of social and affective signals with the goal of advancing the state-of-the-art. The HBU workshops, previously organized as satellite events to major conferences in different disciplines such as ICPR’10, AMI’11, IROS’12, ACMMM’13, ECCV’14, UBICOMP’15, ACMMM’16, FG’18, ECCV’18, ICCV’19 have a unique aspect of fostering cross-pollination of disciplines, bringing together researchers from a variety of fields, such as computer vision, HCI, artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, interaction design, ambient intelligence, psychology and robotics. The diversity of human behaviour, the richness of multimodal data that arises from its analysis, and the multitude of applications that demand rapid progress in this area ensure that the HBU Workshops provide a timely and relevant discussion and dissemination platform. Reminder about the Face Science Symposium and Abstract Deadline

Dear all, **This is a friendly reminder about the 8th Face Science Symposium that willtake place on Tuesday, 17 November 2020 at 08h30, to start at 09h00 and toend at 13h00.** The Face Science Symposium is a joint research and support initiative between the Eyewitness Research Group (UCT, Department of Psychology), the South African Police Service, and Facial Identification Researchers and Practitioners. The initiative was formed in 2014, and we have held a conference every year since. *The format is different this year because the symposium will be hosted online.* We aim to have between 5 and 7 speakers, depending on the number of keynote speakers. Special attention will be paid to the interdisciplinary aspects of the field, including integration of psychological findings into the development of artificial agents and use of computational methodologies in the study of human behaviour. Furthermore, the tutorial will provide examples of applications ranging across the automatic analysis of personality traits, automatic generation of behaviour and the development of embodied agents for health interventions. face database needed

Dear All, I'm looking for facial images of white men with neutral expression between 18 and 60 years. I already have a set from the Chicago Face Database, but I would need additional 200-250 images in similar quality. It is important that there should be no mask around the face, and the whole face should be visible (from chin to the top of the hair). Coloured pictures are preferred. They will be used in a go-nogo task in our lab, later possibly in an online experiment as well. CFD faces will be the "go" trials, these are already selected and rated, so the quality of the "no-go" stimuli really needs to be similar to the selected set. Any suggestions? Request for data: Verbal descriptions and identification data

Dear all, I am working with Professor Colin Tredoux to analyse verbal or written descriptions of perpetrators / faces and statements; unfortunately, we do not have enough diversity in the descriptions that we have collected so far. Specifically, our sample sizes are comparatively small compared to studies that have used MTurk, and when we have found other researchers’ data on OSF (e.g., the Alogna et al replication of the VOE study), our dataset is overwhelming tinted with descriptions of the ‘same’ perpetrator (i.e., the moustached bank robber in the original video used of Schooler). For these reasons, we are reaching out to other researchers for help. We often collect witness statements in our experiments as part of our laboratory procedure (encode – recall – recognise), but we do not normally analyse these statement data. We are hoping that other researchers follow a similar procedure and have description/statement data available. We’d like to ask if you would be willing to share your data where you have collected descriptions of the perpetrator/s or statements of the coding event, and also have corresponding lineup identification data. The data does not need to be processed – we can process it on our side and recode the variables (and I can send this back to you). To do this, we just need to know stimuli characteristics (e.g., tp/ta, position of suspect/target, confidence scale, lineup choice made etc). Please let me know if you are able to assist us. 8th Face Science Symposium 2020

Dear all, *This is a friendly reminder about the 8th Face Science Symposium that will take place on Tuesday, 17 November 2020 at 08h30, to start at 09h00 and to end at 13h00.* The Face Science Symposium is a joint research and support initiative between the Eyewitness Research Group (UCT, Department of Psychology), the South African Police Service, and Facial Identification Researchers and Practitioners. The initiative was formed in 2014, and we have held a conference every year since. *The format is different this year because the symposium will be hosted online.* We aim to have between 5 and 7 speakers, depending on the number of keynote speakers. Call For Abstracts - Workshop on Affective Shared Perception (WASP) Dear all, We are delighted to invite you to submit an abstract, and to participate in our Workshop on Affective Shared Perception (WASP), hosted by the International Conference on Developmental Learning and Epigenetic Robotics (ICDL-EPIROB2020). Please find below all the information! Cheers, Pablo I. Aim and Scope Our perception of the world, in particular, the ones which are influenced by affective understanding, depends both on sensory perception and prior knowledge. Most of the current research on modeling affective behavior as computer models ground their contribution to pre-trained learning models, which are purely data-driven, or on reproducing existing human behavior. Such approaches allow for easily reproducible solutions that fail when applied to complex social scenarios. Understanding shared perception as part of the affective processing mechanisms will allow us to tackle this problem and to provide the next step towards a real-world affective computing system. The goal of this workshop is to present and discuss new findings, theories, systems, and trends in computational models of affective shared perception. The workshop will feature a multidisciplinary list of invited speakers with experience in different aspects of social interaction, which will allow a rich and diverse debate about our overarching theme of affective shared perception. The workshop is scheduled to happen on the 30th of October of 2020 virtually. It will start at 15h00 CET and it will have a total duration of 3h30min. Sclera biometrics have gained significant popularity among emerging ocular traits in the last few years. In order to establish the sclera as a viable biometric trait and to evaluate its potential for automated biometric systems, several works have been presented in the literature, using the sclera vasculature as a standalone biometric trait and in combination with the iris. Despite these initiatives, sclera biometrics need to be studied more extensively to ascertain their usefulness. Among the numerous challenges still open in this area, efficient and robust sclera segmentation is among the most important ones, affecting all downstream tasks, ranging from normalization to recognition. While a considerable amount of research has been directed towards sclera segmentation in recent years, the performance of existing techniques especially in cross-sensor scenarios and across different acquisition conditions is still not well explored. To investigate these issues, to document recent developments and to attract (and raise) the interest of researchers in this emerging biometric trait, we are organzing SSBC 2020 - a competition (and group benchmarking effort) held in conjunction with IJCB 2020 focusing on the problem of sclera segmentation. The competition builds on past sclera segmentation competitions, namely SSBC 2015, SSRBC 2016, SSERBC 2017, SSBC 2018 and SSBC 2019 held in conjunction with BTAS 2015, ICB 2016, IJCB 2017, ICB 2018 and ICB 2019 respectively. SSBC 2020 is the next in the series of sclera segmentation challenges and aims to benchmark sclera segmentation models in both cross sensor settings as well as across different acquisition conditions. ICLD-EpiRob 2020 Journal Track - Call for Journal Articles for Oral or Poster Presentation The program committee of the 10th IEEE International Conference on Development and Learning (ICDL) invites published journal articles to be presented in the Journal Track of ICDL. 28th-30th October 2020, Valparaiso, Chile https://cdstc.gitlab.io/icdl-2020/ ==== COVID-19 Update ==== We have been monitoring the situation evolving around COVID-19 closely and after considering multiple options, together with our partners, we have made the following changes: - The conference will be rescheduled to the 28th to 30th of October of 2020. This will be almost two months later than initially planned. - Additionally, ICDL 2020 will be a hybrid event with on-site and online participants. Online/Virtual attendees will have a reduced registration fee. - Moreover, we have extended all our deadlines. Already submitted articles can be modified. - Finally, we will record and make as many of the talks available to the community. We hope that with these changes, we can still make exiting state-of-the-art research on cognitive and developmental systems to as many of you as possible. Stay safe and we hope to welcome you in Valparaiso. ==== Important Dates ==== Submission deadline: 29th June 2020 Author notification: 20th of July 2020 Conference: 28th-30th October 2020 ==== Overview ==== The Journal Track is designed to provide a forum to discuss important results related to cognitive and developmental systems recently published as journal articles, but have not been previously presented as conference papers. Thus, the journal track offers an opportunity to present outstanding results that might otherwise not be submitted to a conference due to their length and complexity. All accepted journal presentations will be selected for either oral or poster presentation during the conference based on the reviews - at least one author is expected to register to ICDL 2020 and to present the paper in person. ==== Submissions ==== Candidate papers must be original research articles published in a journal relevant to the research area during 2019 or 2020. Papers that are in press may be submitted as long as the final camera-ready version is available online. Extensions of papers that have been previously presented as conference papers may NOT be submitted to this track. All submissions must be made by email to Francisco Cruz, including (in a single PDF): - Title of the original journal paper. - Abstract of the paper. - A complete reference to the original paper in APA format. - URL where the paper can be downloaded from the publisher if available, or proof of the final acceptance. - A copy of the paper with its final camera-ready contents. Submissions will go through an expedited selection process led by the conference chairs.
