Dear All,
There is currently a PhD scholarship (AUD$30,000 per annum for 3.5 years)
available for a student to work with me, Dr Ans Vercammen and Professor
Peter Rendell on a project examining the development and decline of social
cognition and emotion processing. The successful applicant would be based
in Sydney at the Australian Catholic University's Strathfield campus. See
relevant links and more information below.
Could I please ask for your assistance in forwarding this email to anyone
who may be a suitable applicant, or who may know someone else who would be?
Many thanks,
Megan
*Project Title: *The Development and Decline of Social Cognition and
Emotion Processing
*Project Description:* This project will examine how the capacity to
recognise emotion in others, and the ability to use this information to
guide social behaviour develops in childhood and declines in older
adulthood. More specifically, this project will focus on investigating the
cognitive, neural and physiological mechanisms that underpin social
cognitive abilities and emotion processing. With a particular view to
understanding the way in which these capacities develop throughout
childhood and decline in older adulthood. The project will employ a range
of methodologies, including skin conductance responses (SCR), facial
electromyography (EMG) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).

Dear colleagues,****
I am writing to inform you about an exciting initiative: APA PeePs
(*Particularly
Exciting Experiments in Psychology*), a collaboration between six of APA’s
experimental psychology journals! APA PeePs provides free highlights of
meaningful relationships between articles published in these journals,
including *JEP:LMC*, *JEP:HPP*,*JEP:GEN*, *JEP:ABP*, *Behavioral
Neuroscience*, and the *Journal of Comparative Psychology*.
The first PeeP will be distributed next Thursday (June 20), with 1-2 issues
per month.
I am very excited that APA would invest time and effort in a new model of
science outreach, but for this project to continue *we need your support*-
please take a second to subscribe to APA
PeePs<http://paracom.paramountcommunication.com/phase2/survey1/survey.htm?cid=jzm…'>
and share this news with your colleagues. (Note that the link to confirm
subscription that you will receive by email redirects to the APA homepage,
and this should mean that you are confirmed).

Dear All,
I'm looking for a software with which I can register facial movements
shown in a short video (approx. 30 seconds), and morph these movements
on an other face (preferably composite). The point is that I'd like to
test subjects ratings of individual dynamic features (i.e., the
attractiveness of expressions during talk), without being influenced
by facial attractiveness.
My guess is that this software is something that uses Active
Appearence Model. Has anyone heard about such a tool?
thanks a lot

We're working on a database of children's faces (The Dartmouth Database of Children's Faces). It's not FACS coded, but contains images of 40 male and 40 female models between the ages of 6 and 16. Models are photographed on a black background and are wearing black bibs and black hats to cover hair and ears. They are photographed from 5 different camera angles and pose 8 different facial expressions. Models were rated by independent raters and are ranked for the overall believability of their poses.

Dear all - Please find an advert for PhD studentships in face recognition. I'd be grateful if you could bring this to the attention of any suitable candidates.

PhD studentships in Face Recognition (2)
Applications are invited for two PhD studentships starting in October 2013, to work with Professor Mike Burton. Candidates should hold, or expect to achieve a First or Upper Second class degree in Psychology, or a Masters degree in a related subject. The studentships are funded by the European Research Council, and funding will cover UK/EU fees and a stipend at research council rates.
To apply, please make a formal enquiry through the FindAPhD website: studentship1<http://www.findaphd.com/ProjectDetails.aspx?PJID=44784>, studentship2<http://www.findaphd.com/ProjectDetails.aspx?PJID=44785>. Informal enquiries prior to application may be made to Mike Burton: m.burton(a)abdn.ac.uk<mailto:m.burton@abdn.ac.uk><mailto:m.burton@abdn.ac.uk> or 01224 273930. The closing date is 17 May, 2013.
Further Information: These studentships will form part of a large-scale project on face recognition. We are very good at recognising the faces we know, but very poor when recognising or matching unfamiliar faces. This project represents an attempt to understand the cognitive and perceptual processes underlying the differences between familiar and unfamiliar face recognition. In particular, we will be studying the variability in different photos of the same face. One of the studentships will employ computational and statistical analysis of face images, and programming experience will be essential. The second studentship will focus on real-world face recognition, including forensic and security problems.
The University of Aberdeen is a charity registered in Scotland, No SC013683.
I'm not sure whether the set of ecologically valid stimuli and FACS-coded stimuli don't have a null intersection...

Hi,
I am looking for a set of facial expressions of children for the 6 basic
emotions (happiness, sadness, fear, surprise, anger and disgust).
I am especially interested in images that are high-quality but also
received validation for their ecological validity (e.g. would be useful if
they are FACS coded and consistent with Ekman's specifications for facial
movements occuring in these emotions).
Any clues anybody?
Many thanks,

FAO: Experts in face identification / unfamiliar face matching
Dear face researchers,
I am compiling a list of ''Results that practitioners should know about human face matching performance'", for an article to appear in a Passport Industry magazine (ICAO MRTD report). By 'practitioners' I mean policy makers who design processes for verifying the identity of both passport applicants (e.g. passport issuance), and passport holders (e.g. border control). This process requires people to make 'face matching' decisions, i.e. 'are these images of the same person or of two different people?'
I'd like to give the industry some good advice from experts in the field, so that they might develop methods to improve ID verification procedures. Therefore, I am conducting a brief survey:
If you have a few minutes to spare, I wonder if you might be able to help me compile this list - by giving thought to 5 'kernels of knowledge' that you would choose to implant in the practitioners' head. Once you have a list (needn't be 5, could be any number), I would be much obliged if you could forward to me, and include any references that you would like to point towards.
Kindly e-mail to: david.white(a)unsw.edu.au<mailto:david.white@unsw.edu.au>
I will also compile a report of this survey and circulate to the respondents.
Best wishes,
David

Hi
This is Afshin Dehghan, PhD student in Computer Science in Center for
Research in Computer Vision.
We are interested in the problem of matching photos of children with photos
of their parents and needs a data set.
Do you happen to have paired photos of children and one or both of their
parents?
We can go through any process of licensing and agreement and would
appreciate any help.
Cheers

Cheers

Dear all,
I am emailing to ask if anyone has or is aware of a face database which contains male and female caucasian faces with averted and direct gaze, and closed eyes. I would be very grateful if anyone has such faces to share.
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
Thanks a lot,
Kind regards,
Benoît Montalan

One day workshop: Visual attention and eye movements in developmental disorders
On Wednesday 20th March 2013 there will be a one day workshop which will discuss issues related to the study of visual attention and gaze behaviour in neurodevelopmental disorders. The seminar will be hosted by the School of Psychology, Newcastle University.
PROGRAMME NOW AVAILABLE: The programme is now available online http://www.neurodevelopmentaldisorders-seminarseries.co.uk/index.php/semina…
REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN: To register for this seminar please follow the link http://neurodevelopment3.eventbrite.com/
TO SUBMIT A POSTER ABSTRACT: To submit an abstract for a poster on any area of developmental disorders please email your abstract to info(a)neurodevelopmentaldisorders-seminarseries.co.uk<mailto:info@neurodevelopmentaldisorders-seminarseries.co.uk>. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words and please provide all details of authors and affiliations. The closing date for poster abstract submission is Friday 8th February 2013.
This workshop is part of a seminar series entitled 'Neuro-developmental disorders: Exploring sensitive methods of assessment across development' which explores recent findings in neurodevelopmental disorders, with a particular focus on 1) the new research tools and methods used, 2) discussion of the wider applicability of these new tools and methods across different neurodevelopmental disorders, 3) identifying future challenges or controversies when studying neurodevelopmental disorders using a developmental approach.
The seminar series hopes to bring together specialists and established researchers as well as post-graduates, post-doctoral researchers and early career researchers in neurodevelopmental disorders. The first workshop of the series, held in June 2012 at Kingston University, was very successful in meeting our aims. We enjoyed an exciting day of talks, which generated some very interesting discussion. The second workshop on 11th January 2013 was a complete sell out and equally engaging.
The series is sponsored by the British Psychological Society and the Williams syndrome Foundation UK and is being organised by Dr Jo van Herwegen, Dr Emily Farran and Dr Debbie Riby.
More information about the seminar series can be obtained from:
http://www.neurodevelopmentaldisorders-seminarseries.co.uk/
Confirmed Speakers and Titles:
Professor Letitia Naigles
Preferential looking reveals both strengths and weaknesses in the language development of children with autism
Dr Marco Hessels (University of Geneva)
Eye movement registration evidences construct validity in dynamic assessment: People with intellectual disabilities can reason by analogy, but you have to tell them to do so.
Miss Hayley Mace (CEREBRA, Birmingham University)
Eye tracking to explore spontaneous emotion discrimination and face processing in ASD, Fragile X syndrome, Cornelia de Lange syndrome and Rubinstein Taybi syndrome
Dr Sue Fletcher-Watson (Edinburgh University)
Eye tracking in infancy: Looking for early signs of autism and atypical development
Dr Mary Hanley (Queens University Belfast)
Tracking the spectrum of sociability: eye tracking evidence from Autism and Williams
syndrome
Dr John Swettenham (UCL)
Two ways to look at attention in ASD: i) Orienting to biological motion and ii) the role of perceptual load in selective attention.
Dear all,
for my master thesis I'm running an experiment on face processing and I was
wondering whether some of you can indicate me whether I can find a set of
faces for the composite faces task (maybe faces already used in other
studies so to be sure that they are well controlled).
Thank you very much for your help
Kind Regards

Dear all,
I am looking for video or 3D animation of facial expressions that can
be manipulated to subtly alter the gender and identity of each face.
The idea is that we wish to run an expression discrimination task and
a gender discrimination task using the same or similar video stimuli.
Alternatively, does anyone know of a video database that was designed
for this sort of comparison? e.g..: expression sequences with faces
morphed to produce 100% male, 25% male, etc.
This may be a long shot, but if anyone has any suggestions I would be
extremely grateful.
Thank you in advance,
Hayley

Dear all,
Does anyone know/have black face database?
We plan to do a gender judgment task, so both male and female
faces are needed.
Thanks for any help!
