PhD studentship in Face Recognition. University of Aberdeen, School of Psychology Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to work with Professor Mike Burton. Candidates should hold a First or Upper Second class degree in Psychology, Computing Science, or a related subject. The studentship is funded by the European Research Council, and will cover three years’ fees and stipend for UK/EU students only. A great deal of eye tracking research relies on AOI-based data aggregation, however, the method is under-researched and it is largely unknown how different ways of aggregating eye tracking data might influence your results; for instance, by inflating the false positive (negative) rate. The Berlin School of Mind and Brain is an international and interdisciplinary graduate research school that offers a three-year doctoral degree program in English. The School was established in 2006 as part of Germany’s Excellence Initiative for German universities. It is the Berlin School of Mind and Brain’s mission to train outstanding young scientists to become experts in one of the relevant fields, to provide them with knowledge over the gamut of mind and brain research, and to give them the ability, and the opportunity, to cooperate with researchers from other disciplines. Doctoral candidates are admitted by a four-step process that identifies the 10–15 best applicants. They are selected in a highly competitive and internationally open admission procedure. Madeleine McCann facial composite appeal

Dear Colleagues, please forgive a post which is not directly about research. The police in Britain have issued two facial composites of a man in the Madeleine McCann abduction case. However, they have not taken advantage of our research indicating a) that an average image of two composites of the same target may help and b) an animated caricature can also help identification. I've created average and animated caricature composites; please share this link in any way you can; the police need names. I confess I don't know how to contact them from outside the UK but hopefully people with information will find a way. Applicants should have or expect to receive a first class Honours degree in Psychology or a cognate discipline. The studentship is funded as part of an ARC Linkage project in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Australia Passports). We are looking to offer either a 3 year PhD scholarship or additional top-up funding for students who have been awarded an Australian Postgraduate Award. We anticipate the student would start their PhD in early 2014. The aim of the Linkage Project is to improve the ability to detect identity fraud in the passport issuance process by developing training and individual difference tests for users of face recognition software. It is anticipated that the PhD student will investigate theoretical aspects of unfamiliar face matching which will inform more applied aspects of the project. There may be some opportunities for the student to undertake some more applied work, and also to compare human and computer performance on face matching tasks. Possible topics include (but are not limited to) individual differences in face processing ability, correlates of face-matching expertise, and cognitive markers of familiarity. The project will provide a detailed understanding of how pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorders cope with learning in typical classroom environments. Therefore the Research Assistant will work closely with schools to conduct research using eye tracking methods. One test measures expression perception (an odd-man-out matching task in which participants select which one of three faces displays a different expression) and the other one additionally requires explicit identification of the emotion (a labelling task in which participants select one of six verbal labels). PLoS ONE 8(6): e68126. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0068126 Abstract: Although good tests are available for diagnosing clinical impairments in face expression processing, there is a lack of strong tests for assessing “individual differences” – that is, differences in ability between individuals within the typical, nonclinical, range. Here, we develop two new tests, one for expression perception (an odd-man-out matching task in which participants select which one of three faces displays a different expression) and one additionally requiring explicit identification of the emotion (a labelling task in which participants select one of six verbal labels). We demonstrate validity (careful check of individual items, large inversion effects, independence from nonverbal IQ, convergent validity with a previous labelling task), reliability (Cronbach’s alphas of.77 and.76 respectively), and wide individual differences across the typical population.
