The Research: - We aim to understand the mechanisms (perceptual, cognitive, neural and evolutionary) of person perception and how they relate to other cognitive abilities and social functioning. - As well as investigating person perception in typical adults, we also study how these skills emerge during typical development and whether these skills are impaired in children and adults with disorders of person perception (e.g., autism, developmental prosopagnosia). - Methods include behavioural, eye-tracking, SCR, EEG and potentially tDCS. PhD scholarships in emotional expression processing (Ottmar Lipp, Curtin University, Australia)

Good afternoon - I would be grateful if the following could be posted: PhD scholarships in emotional expression processing (Ottmar Lipp, Curtin University, Australia) Up to 2 PhD scholarships are available for research on topics related to an ARC funded project entitled 'The emotional face: Effects on orienting, visual search, and categorization'. Using a range of converging methodologies drawn from neuroscience, social, and cognitive psychology, the project will advance our understanding of the processing of the expressions of two central social emotions, happiness and anger, by delineating the conditions that support or limit emotional expression processing in the general population. This research will provide an invaluable knowledge base for subsequent applied research into deficits of emotional expression processing such as occur in autism, anxiety, or old age. The successful applicants will be based in the Emotion, Learning, and Psychophysiology Laboratory led by Professor Ottmar Lipp and located in the School of Psychology and Speech Pathology, Curtin University, Perth, WA, Australia. The laboratory facilities enable research using psychophysiological (EEG, EMG, autonomic nervous system) and behavioural (eye movements, response time) methodologies. Applicants with experience using these methodologies are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate(s) will receive a stipend of AUS$25,849 per annum which will be indexed for the duration of the award. This scholarship will be for three years with a possible maximum extension of up to six months. If the successful candidate is an international student, the scholarship will cover the tuition fees for the duration of the award. The successful candidate is expected to commence in early 2015. Eligibility Criteria: Essential: First class honours (or equivalent) in Psychology; Experience in experimental and quantitative methodology; Strong verbal and written communication skills; High level of motivation and ability to work in teams. *Postdoctoral positions on face and object recognition* Two postdoctoral research positions are open at the Objects and Knowledge Laboratory, headed by Dr. Olivia Cheung, at New York University Abu Dhabi. The postdoctoral researchers will carry out behavioral and fMRI experiments on human object/face/letter recognition. Potential research projects include, but are not limited to, investigations of the influences of experience and conceptual knowledge on recognition processes. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, or a related field, and should possess strong programming skills (e.g., Matlab). Prior experience with neuroimaging or psychophysical techniques is preferred. Initial appointments are for up to two years with the opportunity of renewal for additional years. Starting date is flexible, preferably during early 2015. The Objects and Knowledge Laboratory is part of the rapidly growing Psychology division at New York University Abu Dhabi. The lab is located in the new campus on Saadiyat Island (Abu Dhabi’s cultural hub), and has access to the state-of-the-art neuroimaging facilities (including MRI, MEG, and TMS). FG15 Doctoral Consortium also aims to: - provide a networking environment that will enable the doctoral students establish new contacts and collaborations with other international junior and senior researchers; - equip the new generation of bright researchers with career options and inform them about the possibilities in academia and industry. The Doctoral Consortium will be a half-day event, and will start with a catered lunch combined with an informal introduction by the senior researchers followed by Q&A and discussions with attendees. The committee members will discuss the work with the student and provide constructive comments and guidance on his/her research. Post Doc Position in Human Neuroscience and Visual Cognition

Human Neuroscience and Visual Cognition Lab Department of Psychology Wright State University A post-doc position is now available at the newly established Human Neuroscience and Visual Cognition Lab at the Department of Psychology, Wright State University. The lab is headed by Dr. Assaf Harel and investigates high-level vision and its neural substrates. We are particularly interested in how visual recognition occurs in real-world settings and adopt a neuroergonomic approach to study the applied aspects of high-level vision. For this purpose, we employ a diversity of cognitive neuroscience methods, including fMRI, EEG, psychophysics, and eye tracking. Research topics include, but are not limited to the following areas: visual expertise, object and scene recognition, categorization and perceptual learning. The position is fully funded for two years. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience, Cognitive Psychology, Neurobiology, Computer Science, or any other related discipline by the start date of the position. Strong background and familiarity with fMRI or EEG research is required. Experience in computer programming, especially with Matlab is highly encouraged and will be considered a strong advantage. The proposed research combines neuropsychological cases, behavioural training, and neuroimaging to understand the mechanisms of face perception and perceptual expertise. The idea is to build automatic classifiers to help the referees during world cup games distinguish "real" facial expressions of pain from "faked" expressions of pain, thereby helping to book players more fairly. Our methodology was to gather expressions from world cup videos, and then assign to positive (real pain) or negative (faked pain) class based on whether the player in question stayed off the field/on the ground for more than 30 seconds. Although we have found large numbers of negative class examples (see below for examples), we are having some difficulty identifying any positive class facial expressions. We therefore seek input from the facial expression research community into how we can adjust our methodology while gathering this important dataset of facial expressions. In this paper, we look into the parent-offspring problem from computer perspective, propose new deep learning approach and try to answer 4 key questions that have been of interest in other fields, e.g anthropologies. 1.
