Dear all,
On Wednesday this week at 4pm, Stephen Ferrigno (University of Wisconsin-Madison) will be talking about number representations in human and non-human animals. Please, see below the
title and short abstract for his talk.
This meeting will be
online (link below).
Evolutionary and developmental origins of number representations
Infants and non-human animals can discriminate more from less without counting, symbols, or language. Although children have a sense of quantity that emerges during infancy, the precision of this quantity discrimination does not reach adult like levels until
the teens. Here I will talk about previous work and ongoing studies testing two potential causes for this protracted development: maturation and experience. Although these possibilities are difficult to isolate in children, studies with non-human animals offer
unique ways of separating these factors.
Best,
Gema
